With the rebates it's no wonder the 5DII has been under wraps.

And please, that's not a mis-listing. Charlotte is now trying to cover herself. It has a publication date and two standard ISBNs.

Canon is not releasing any details about the 5DII because it'll likely be priced at about $2500 for body. I say that because it will likely be considerably better than the current 5D for quite the bargain, similar to Nikon's D300. Canon has to create a D300 killer at a good price as well. They can't release a 5DII below current rebates on the 5D, but keeping the

You know anything is possible....and I have read just about every possability here in the past few months..........but this one here sounds a lot like what a big corp. would do....so Esquire might just be right....well atleast some one here will be sooner or later......

Dealing with non-disclosures and the likes on a regular basis, I can assure you this is about as canned a response as they come.

I'm not saying she's lying, but if you have an NDA, you would never admit to it. That would be a leak in and of itself.

Everything she denies is right on with what an NDA requires. I'm not determining whether she has an NDA and is lying, but just wanted to point that out.

I hope she's lying her ass off, I want a 15-16MP full frame camera with sensor performance of the 1DIII sooner better than later. But good things come to people that wait, give it to me Canon.

For a mere $850 transferred by Western Union to Hong Kong, you too can have this arrive at your doorstep:
http://jankaluza.info/blog/fm/Canomatic-5Dii.jpg
No manual, no support, no returns - of course.

As you can see "retro" is really IN. The plastic lens is far lighter than that L-glass tank you normally have to drag around.

I don't buy it. How did they know the new camera will be called 5D Mark II, not 3D or 7D or whatever.

This was all he really wanted to say to Canon:

"This was an honest error by a new employee. " -Barry Pruett, Publisher.

And this from Charlotte: "I sincerely wish the error hadn’t been made, and I can’t speculate on how it happened. I’ve alerted the people I know about the listing errors, and they are working to correct them."

Are they trying to wiggle off the hook?

Whether Canon have provided a beta model to write this book, or whether they have not provided a beta model and had no idea the book was being written (e.g. general exposure and composition chapters already written, the specifics will be entered upon release of the camera) does not really matter to Canon. If Canon did not authorise this listing as a "leak" then they are going to be a little pissed off that their 5D sales have taken such a drop as people now have enough encouragement to wait and see what will materialise in the next few months. The fact is that Canon are trying to offload the present 5D with very good prices. So I think that if they did authorise this publication, then they must be announcing the 5DII quite soon.

The only reason I can think of Canon authorising this type of "leak" is that it is probably the only way they can issue a statement that a new camera is coming, yet not be obliged to publish any specifications just yet. (What does this tell us about production runs?) They would be well insulated from prying questions in this situation. It may be all they can do right now (other than offer up rebates on the 40D and 5D) to prevent people jumping ship to more feature-rich Nikon and Sony models. The timing of the announcement is a little suspicious - US holiday weekend so that it cannot be immediately removed.

So we have: deniabilty from all parties; mutual benfit for Canon, author and publisher; no specific information given about the capabilities of the camera just yet; suspicious timing allows the rumour to spread like a virus acros the internet; a plausible release date for the book and 5DII.

All of the people that bought the current 5D on rebate are going to be pissed come the launch of the 5DII. But they'll all justify their purchases somehow, claiming the 5DII doesn't "pop," or there's some "magic" to the current 5D that the 5DII lacks.

Actually the majority of 5d owners who post on forums and threads are showing incredible amounts of purchase insecurity by overstating that anyone who is waitng for a 5d mkII is nothing short of mentally incapable when they '' could get a 5dMkII NOW''.

Sure, the 5d is a great camera, and will STILL be a great camera many years from now...but you are living in cuckoo land if you think that this camera can't or won't be improved on.

I know I am going to wait for the newer version to come out, check the specs and price and if necessary, buy the 'old' 5d if the 5d mkII dosn't offer me features to value for money.

Then i can join the no doubt growing masses of 5d owners who will have a burning need to say just how the new mkII lacks the ' magic' of the 5d etc , how anyone owning a 5d mkII is a gear head and not a photographer etc etc

So is the name "5D MK2" confirmed since it's printed on the front of the book? Or did the "new employee" accidentally created a fake cover page of the book and put it as an icon in Amazon?

As she already has a book on the 5D, if the 'mkII' part was an error, why the heck is she bringing out a 2nd 'how to' book? Can anyone check what the ISBN code refers to? a mistake on an Amazon listing, however unlikely (what the heck would the employee have confused it with exactly?) may be possible, if that was the title on the ISBN documentation the code refers to it isn't a mistake anymore.

On the other hand how do you write a book on a pre-release camera with pre-release firmware?

Methinks it's the same as the Spanish pdf leak with the original 5D. It's canon playing games with our minds.

"but if you have an NDA, you would never admit to it."... What? That's not right. I've signed NDA's and have said "NDA's permit me to know nothing" and then smiled. The rest of what is said might be correct, but that part isn't, sorry.

nikt, if you have an NDA and are asked a general question, you can of course say that you have and NDA/CDA/MTA covering all developments and projects in that area.

However, if the title of a project as been leaked, is the ONLY possible project you could be involved in at this time with Canon, and you are asked to verify the existence of that project, what do you say?
"Sorry, I've signed a CDA binding me not to discuss that project".
Ha-ha!

I agree with Esquire --- covert or time-sensetive collaborations would have to be denied.

I say "They are working on something, I can't discuss details, and I can't confirm or deny the details". It's that easy. There's ALWAYS someone asking a question about something they've heard or read.

Error my arse. Like the posting on Amazon just got put together by mistake. That's a lot of effort for an 'error'. The error is it was posted too soon.

You can still pre order the book. It's no mistake. Except perhaps in the timing.

So if you had an NDA with Canon concerning the 5DII, and someone came up and asked "You're the lead photographer in the world and main tester for Canon, are you testing a 5DMKII?" and you said "I am permitted to know nothing" and flashed a huge grin/smile, you don't think Canon would get a little pissed at you and possibly deny you future pre-releases?

They would. You'd essentially be blacklisted, because NDA's don't only cover words, they cover everything. Your behavior alone is enough for any company in privity with you via an NDA to deny you any future pre-releases.

When it comes to NDAs, you deny, you don't insinuate or suggest.

i love it when people put a price tag on this future camera when in reality they have no idea.

i am betting when it is finally released, many people will complain cause the price is too high compared to the current 5D at +-2k.
