p.1 #1 · Hip Hip Artist

Hey friends!

I haven't posted in a few weeks I have been shooting for DST and I'm not allowed to let the photos get out.

Anyway, I decided to take a photo shoot today with a hip hop artist. He didn't want to shot his eyes because I guess thats even more tuff. haha

Hope you enjoy these! CC welcome.

I don't like #1 at all. The light through the hat doesn't look good, but works great in #4. Not a bad series.

Hey I completely reworked #1. What do you think?

2,3,7, and 11 are my stand out photos.

2 even more if his leg wasn't so far out, it's nice, but just a bit of a stretch.
3 because it's just got a sword, and would be cool in a square.
7 has the most effective use of the treatment, but I wish it would be consistent in the sky from left to right, saturation and hue wise in the ground. Wish he was perfectly lined up though.
11, same comment as 7, in regards to sky consistency.

Is this an effect you can tweak to match, or something like wyeth where you use settings, pray a bit, and press a button?

Cheers,
Thomas

I think all would be great album covers. My favorites are 2, 4 and especially 11. Awesome work.

#2 and #11 are outstanding. Nicely made images. Strong.

I think the others have some appeal but I would be ruthless and would only show the very best. In other words, I think the 'weaker' images take away from the stronger ones when displayed together.

Also, while I like the PP effects, I think when seeing too many it diminishes the 'special' look of a strong one. I hope you understand what I mean.

Keep up the good work. I like it.

Rian,

your PP work if top notch here, as in your other posts. You should share a little of your process. I am sure the response would be excellent.

Nice work, man.

The lighting and PP are done really well. I'm probably not the 'target market' for these images but they seem like "find the out of place objects" games...

Funky hat + button up shirt and leather coat + sword =
Farmer? Painter? Ninja? Nope... Hip Hop artist

Rian, yes, put it on the web. But as mentioned, only the best stuff. Be your worst critic. Put a tutorial behind if you think this is what you'd like to do. Personally, I'd love to see you do this, but that's me.

#4 works so well, as has been picked out a few times, because of it's minimalist approach. The background doesn't distract in any way from the main subject and your eye is free to roam around an explore it. Nicely positioned composition too.

In #7 and #9, the horizontal crack in the road behind needs to be cloned out. It's interfering with the subject, it cuts across him from one end to the other.

In #11, it's a little bit of the same problem. The line is white, and with the direction of his look , together throw you right out the page. If you can maybe take out the white line just behind him; it might be better.

I know these are just wanky, art farty comments, but I like the images. And of course, it is just my opinion. You may like it just as it is.

Cheers
Nik

Man, I just took a look at your site and these have to be the most ingenious inventions ever! What great ideas!
Two Questions:
(1) What lens are you using
(2) Will you please explain your PS work

Good Stuff!

Thanks,
Josiah
