I considered the 28-300 L briefly, first it costs a lot of money (no surprise), it's big (again no surprise) and it's heavy. I also am not using it for anything serious, so I want something with reasonable performance and LIGHT.

Thnaks for this, the quality of the lens looks to be very good indeed.

However, I'm unsure as to what you mean by "pronominal"; here is a definition of the word:
pro·nom·i·nal (pr-nm-nl)
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or functioning as a pronoun.
2. Resembling a pronoun, as by specifying a person, place, or thing, while functioning primarily as another part of speech. His in his choice is a pronominal adjective

By pronominal do you mean that the lens can be used to produce professional results, i.e. results worthy of publication, etc.? If so, high praise indeed.

Thank you for the clarification. I too think it's producing stellar results.

I'm tempted to buy one for my 5D and I have very little doubt that it will serve its purpose well. I'd be willing to bet it'll be as good as the 28-135IS, especially for 8x10 and lower.

If your careful I'd say 16x20

Well, it certainly seems to deliver the goods even on full frame. I might just have to buy one someday!

Looking at these pictures this could really be a glorified point and shoot.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Hmm I have been thinking of something like this. Does anybody have any expirience with something that goes wider. I don't mind losing something on the long end på 28 is just not that wide, not even on a FF.

PrecisionPhoto thanks for the shots, I am IN. Thanks for all the shots, especially the flare shot!

Savas this lens minus the shade is just about the size of the 17-40F4L ie a little over 3 inches long at one zoom position (don't know if it is the long or short end however). The lens shade is huge just like the 17-40 (which is what you would expect!

PP ~ Thanks for taking the time on the 28-300 shots. I'm in too. For the money and performance, the image quality is far better than I expected. Did you shoot those as .jpgs or RAW? I find the make the 5d really work, RAW has been necessary for most situations other that even light ... I think I have to mess around with those "profiles" though, or whatever they are called for a more optimum .jpg compression/decisions.

I am travelling again for Easter (though MI not anything as exotic as Mexico) and have a "BW Portrait" assignment for the photo club I run, so I'll see how it works in that capacity. I'll have lots of nice subjects out there ...

Thanks again!

Carolyn

PP, I can't see the new photos either. Looks like the urls are wrong or something.

I also own the Tamron SP 24-135mm and love how it performs on my 5D. 100-135mm is its weakest focal length, but even there it held up very well when I tested against my Zeiss 100/3.5 Sonnar (known to be one of the sharpest lenses Zeiss ever made). There's no doubt the Zeiss has a bit more kick, but the difference on the 5D is very subtle due to the 5D's relatively low resolving ability.

I'd love to see a comparison between the 24-135 and the 28-300 at 135mm, at various apertures (preferably tripod + mirror lockup + ISO 100).

When comparing the full frame results of the 24-135 and the 28-300 (non-VC) over at www.slrgear.com, it appears the 28-300 is as good or better than the 24-135, throughout their common focal length ranges. Knowing how my 24-135 performs, I am excited by the prospect of a super-zoom with VC that performs as good or better and offers a much bigger range. On a lens like this, I will not miss the 4mm on the wide end. I'll have my Zuiko 21/3.5 in my pocket anyway.

Wow, you posted what I asked for while I was making the request. Still can't see the photos, though.

Oops, there they are.

Why are the 100% crops (I'm assuming that's what these are) different for the same focal length? The objects in the images are different sizes. They should be close to the same at the same focal length and distance.

I'll try more of the (preferably tripod + mirror lockup + ISO 100).
What I don't like about the 24-135 is minor, the focus ring in manual moves to fast for fine forcing to me.
The 28-300 VC when faced down at a slight angle will cause it to extend out on it's own.
Issue that can be worked around.

PrecisionPhoto on the heli pad photos, the 24-135 "appears" to have more contrast than the 28-300 shot? Where they taken under exactly the same conditions or did the sun come out? Yes I know it's a nit pick, and I probably can set the contrast up in the 5D custom settings, just curious?

Thanks for your effort!!!

NOTE to all others you need to refresh the page at FM to see the pictures, ditto if you post and it doesn't show up, get out of FM then back in and it should be there, and if you are curious it is a browser / database issue.
