Good afternoon FMer's,
Yes I am going to convert my 5D into a glorified point and shoot for family travel / camping
typically in bright sun, etc. What I am expecting from this setup, no lens changing, VC/IS for some low light work (will backup with a 50F1.4 if necessary), pictures should be good to 8X10 (not expecting to do anything bigger) I expect reasonable color, no severe distortions.
I currently have 17-40F4, 50F1.4, and 70-200F4L (non IS), I am not expecting the same image quality, I am look for convenience and a lighter load on my back.
Can I expect this lens to be similar to the 28-135IS by canon or do I need to lower my expectations?
BTW I did check the review section they have the old lens there without VC, and all the separate reviews I have seen have been on cropped bodies.

Ok, popphoto doesn't seem to be terribly well-regarded on these forums, but they have a decent review of the lens. It was rated very highly on cropped bodies, but not surprisingly didn't do as well on full frame. Still, if you want a do-it-all, it covers a heck of a range on full frame.

I'm tempted to buy one for my 5D and I have very little doubt that it will serve its purpose well. I'd be willing to bet it'll be as good as the 28-135IS, especially for 8x10 and lower.

Just rented one from lensrentals.com
I have the 1DnII and he check to be sure it worked on my camera and look foward to testing the lens Wednesday
Word from Roger; Sorry to take so long responding, I had to double check. I just took some shots on a 5D and it didn't vignette at all so it should work fine. Its also a surprisingly good lens for a superzoom - I've shot it a couple of times and was impressed.

Makes sense, at least you know your camera and it's performance. That combination should kick butt compared to P&S pics from a real P&S, and be only slightly less convenient due to size.

My reason for getting this lens, is if you are at the beach or DW all day carrying 2 L lenses even small F4 ones gets real tiring. I am only going to take snapshots and maybe a 8X10 at most so it isn't optically demanding and a PS just doesn't cut it.
So thanks for the feedback it looks like I am of to the photo store to buy one locally and give it a whirl!

Yakim, I have a PS, 2 things I hate about it, first picture noise is horrible, and lastly the shutter lag is even worse. If buy a "good" PS I am looking at $500, so I am just going to get a lens instead.

Great question and replies!
This is the EXACT combination I am looking to try. Having just come returned from hiking/shooting in the Mexican jungle (Mayan Riviera mostly), with some beaches, wildlife shooting and cenotes thrown in, I can say, with much authority, carrying the 5D, 17-40, 50mm 1.8, fisheye, 100-400 and the 580EX (for interior shots) and polarizer filters was excrutiating. I'm 5'6" 135 lbs., lift weights and run (4M 3 x a week), so not really out of shape ... but in the 85F+ heat, 100% humidity, I challenge even the fittest to enjoy the sights with that on their back. I truly struggled with my love of adventure and love of photography ... they sure felt tough on some days. The results were great (awesome shots for the ones I did get), but the pictures limited. Many opportunities were missed for my inability to change lenses quickly ...not to mention get the lug off of my back and into my bag.
I disagree that this would be turning thhe 5D into a glorified P&S. I also tested that theory, recently having bought a high end Canon P&S ... those teensy pixels on the teensy sensor, not to mention that shutter lag = horrible results upon return. I can say squeezing 10MP on a minute sensor is not necessarily a good idea.
Even with mediocre glass, the 5D shines in ways a P&S never can and at this low price, if this lens hangs in there reasonably, I'll be happy to lighten the load considerably.

Well, would SOMEONE please part with their money, buy the lens and give a coherent report on how it behaves? Please, pretty please? From the specs of the thing it does look like a mighty interesting option for those times when you want to weld a single lens onto the camera for a week or so! The 28-300L is just a little bit too expensive (by a factor of three or so) for me to consider, at least.

I downloaded a sample image from that combination & in my eyes it was much softer than my 40D Sigma 18-200 OS combination, which is my glorified travel P & S. I think the sample is from Lensrentals web site.

For what it's worth, my travel lens with the 5D is Tamron's 24-135, an under-rated lens if there ever was one. But for 10X zooming, I wouldn't put anything on my 5D but Canon's 28-300 L Image Stabilized lens, which is far from being a travel lens! It's quite a beast. But it is, without question, the best all around extreme zoom lens made.
Though I have great respect for Tamron's products in general, I think that a 3rd party lens that attempts a 10X zoom at a mid-range price point or lower is going to disappoint in some ways. To be expected. However, I'm also of a mind that getting a soft shot is better than getting no shot at all. If Tamron's 28-300 is similar to their 24-135, then you'll have lots of nice shots to bring home.
