New image from yesterday's test session - lighting was a single Profoto D4 head with a 42" white umbrella high and to the left maybe 8' away, powered by an AcuteB pack at less than half power. Just wanted to give a little pop over daylight.

Simon,
Love, love, love these images. Some of the best work I've seen of yours. I knew there was a Maestro in there waiting to burst out.
Thanks, man! That really means a lot to me. I'm trying to break out of my comfort zone and take my work in a direction that feels more exciting to me, so I'm really glad to hear that I might be doing something right.
Now I just need to figure out how to get multi-image layouts like that into my print portfolios, which are all set up as facing pages/double-trucks.
My thoughts (hope you don't mind): Shot is a little flat and "washed out." I'm guessing you had the octa dead center and level with the model's head. There is very little texture to the shaving cream and because the light is on-axis, it actually makes the cream look "thin." Adding some angular light (maybe a bare bulb off to the side as key light, with the octa dialed down for frontal fill only) would give the image much more punch.
Also, he could benefit from the services of a professional make up artist to smooth out the shaving cream, get precise application lines, and remove the dingleberries (ha ha) from his nose and lip line. If you look at any Gillette commercials, the shaving cream application is literally FLAWLESS - aim for that.
Oh, and just a minor detail - that razor has been clearly used before and has some crud on the chromed handle. Small details are what make the shot

Any time I'm in town I'm likely to be down in Brooklyn, as is the studio I'm sharing - that was shot in one of the alleys outside the studio (they're basically contained locations, best of both worlds). She bartends somewhere in Murray Hill, though, so maybe you've come across her there?
