I usually don't ride anything that doesn't have a brake and a throttle, so on horseback is not a place I have been. I will tell you that you both are a thing of beauty together and well captured by the instructed photographer!
I am willing to bet he intentionally cut that gleaming dome off so you would not have to sweat it in PP figuring it was out of range on the highlight curve! Gosh, he sure is good to you.................Ha
Very nice images to both of you, what a beautiful setting, I like the 'synchonized dressage' scene.

Take time and enjoy!

Lil, You've trained your husband really well. Have you considered that maybe he deserves his own camera? .... perhaps a 40D or even a MkIII. I think you may be holding him back!

Thanks Laura.....

We had a great time. Destined loves his work & when we put a twist on it like this he gets a riot out of it. He's got such a great sense of humor.

Thank you Karl,

horses come with a brake & a throttle - - - you just need to know how to access them. I do feel that Destined & I are well matched so if that carries through - - that's wonderful.

My husband has a funny way of doing things at times, sometimes he just get caught up in the moment & then "things happen"

Glad you like the "Synchronized dressage" scene - - Ross got a few where they just matched beautifully & that's hard for the little Shetland to do as hisstrides are so much shorter than the Warmblood's.

I will enjoy...... Glad you did as well...

thanks Charles....

Ross is great. When I ask for shots he's wonderful & does it for me. When I ask for video he'll drive to shows & tape for me. I have two camera bodies. He uses one when he want's to. Every now & then he sees the hummingbirds active & takes the camera & shoots. He asks me for some settings etc. But he's learning. He's actually a professional cameraman in the film & TV industry since about 35 years. He just rarely does stills. Since I got back into stills, he's kind of gotten interested again. But he's not as passionate about it as I am. He's happy to share... & so am I.

Considering how old I feel when I look at some of these shots.... I am happy & proud of my Destined. We're going on 12 years together & have worked hard together. He's a wonderful horse.

Question for you all.... My youngest got hooked on the horses...my budget is finally recovering enough to get back into my photography a little. I am trying to figure out if I can get a lens that would do dual duty to take Dan's style of horse jumping AND use for macro. I just got an XTI. I was thinking a 100mm macro, a tamron macro or getting an 85mm 1.8 and a tube. any thoughts? seems like focus speed is an issue on the macros vs macro capability of the 85mm with a tube.

Cools shots Lil. I love the composition and background in the second image!

My wife is really into horses, she had one as a kid (grew up on a farm)., and a stables backs up against our back yard so I we can feed and pet them over the fence

Cheers,
Gene

Looking very good Lil... I live here in Virginia just a couple miles from the Commonwealth Park where Christopher Reeves had his accident..Every other weekend they have something going on there...I've been tempted many times to stop in and get some pictures...but never have. It's a real sight to see all the expensive motorhomes (coaches)... and tractor trailer horse rigs that show up there....rich people are definitely into the horse scene...

Jim,

I don't know Canon lenses, but I do know Nikon has two fabulous 85mm lenses & so I would imagine that Canon do as well. You want a fast lens for horses. So an 85mm f/1.8 should do well. We do most of the shooting of the horses with the Nikon 70-200VR which is a f/2.8 lens & has super IQ, but it's a $ 1700.00 lens as well.....

Main thing for you to think about is speed of the lens. You can always buy a tube for macros. Nikon also has a 105mm macro lens which many use as a portrait lens - - maybe Canon has something similar. Focus speed is not an issue with macros - - you should focus those manually. But it is an issue for shots of horses jumping. You do need high IQ & fast shutter speeds....

Good luck & support your youngest.... horses is a healthy sport & interest & has kept many teenagers out of trouble. But make sure your youngest is safe. Many trainers are not what they should be...

Good luck

Lil

Thanks Gene,

I love the second one as well. It's a fun shot I need to share with the breeders of both horses.

Once horses are in our blood, we really are not the same if we don't have access to them.... It's just part of being able to a breath.... I'm glad you have them that close. I'm sure your wife is happy to have them that close. The 15 years I took off made seeing any horse a heartache & upsetting to me. Now I go down to the barn & hug my boys & know things will be OK.

Thank you Donald,

Christopher Reeves accident was a type of accident that happens all the time. He unfortunately just landed in a very bad way. Horrible for all.... You should stop in & just shoot a few candids in the morning light. The interaction in between horse & rider is an amazing experience & connection. Yes, many people spend a fortune & have a fortune to spend on the horses & all that's involved. I do it on a budget & keep the horses at home. I take lessons here & there, & show now & then. For me the main thing is to have them, ride them & enjoy them & life. We grow together & enjoy life. I don't have a fortune to spend on the riding. My horses are not the expensive horses you see. But I do know how to make them look expensive. Personally I'd rather buy a cheaper good horse & develop it into a great expensive looking horse, than buy a super expensive horse & not know how to ride it.

I've always bought young horses & developed them. My father made me earn things from day one.

Wouldn't trade it for anything....

Lil

You are right, once they are hooked, they are hooked. But look at the happiness it brings, Hard to find something that will consistantly provide excercise and health, teach responsibility, and learn about life. She goes to shows and learn not to do it for the ribbons because the judging is inconsistant and a horse is inconsistant.

Jim, my father was a gymnast & was on the reserve list for the Olympics a long time ago. Gymnastics & athletics are & have always been rated highly by him. So after driving my sister & I to the barn once a week for lessons for a year he decided it would be cheaper & easier to keep a horse at home. We lived in such a manner that we could. Well, I don't think he counted on me still being in horses 41 years later.

But he's still fully standing by me with my horses. Reason for the push at such an early age..... Just what you listed, exercise, health, fresh air, teach responsibility & to have a "time out" from stress from school & homework.

Her learning how the game at shows go is a hard lesson - - but it will make her stronger.

My father says there is a no more demanding sport than the equestrian. His reasons are simple.... It deals with the communication in between two completely different beings who both can have good & bad days. Add to this, they need to be able to communicate in the same "language". There are many factors in showing horses. Horse, rider, judge & environment all adds.

I wish your daughter all the joy & luck - - she has entered a world which can give her more joy & heartache than you can imagine.

A lot of rich people in horses - we're not. I do this out of our home & mostly on my own, but I do now & then take lessons.

Horses can so draw your attention. Little ColieOlie is a show off & knows how to be the horse to look at. Such a ham....

Lil, Being I lived on the lower Pasteur of a rather good size farm (900 Acres) but only about 300 in Pasteur there was always a cow or Pony loose in my yard and also back quite awhile ago the government was rounding up a lot of the wild Mustangs out west and the lady that takes care of all these animals got 3 of them for free. They did take some doing before she could ride them but she did. One of those damn ponies’s bit me one night in the dark. I had a pouch of pipe tobacco in my shirt pocket and I didn’t see him coming and he wanted that tobacco and he got a piece of my shoulder with it. Just proves smoking is bad for your health even back when they didn’t know it. Yeah I still like horses and I hear from that lady every once in awhile.

Sounds like a great place to live. Wild Mustangs can be next to impossible to "tame" - especially if they're not separated and worked on a daily basis. They're wild & it's a long process....

Ponies can do that. You know the saying, bit in front & kick in the back. but lets not forget all those which kick forward as well.

Sounds like a wonderful place to live Lou.....

How very odd. I just sent a reply, and it disappeared into the ether. Now I'm going to have to type it all out again, if I can remember what I said....Oh yeah, it went something like this:

Thanks for sharing these, Lil! I love horses, and pass by many fields with horses on my way home from work. I would really love to stop and take some pictures, but I don't know how the owners would feel about that. As an owner yourself, how would you feel about some strange, grotty little man taking photographs of your pride and joy? Then there's the whole 'what are the pictures going to be used for' issue. I'm not a professional (blindingly obvious to all here!), but they wouldn't know that, and might think that I'm trying to make money from selling photo's of their private property. Any advice?

Frank

You got that right Lil but this gal broke them all. If they were not adopted they were going to be destroyed I believe as they were getting to be to many. I think the Gov. found all of the excess homes. This lady was something else with any kind of animals and she even trained several dogs for blind people and I believe they are all still going. Your right about a place to live and I don't know why I sold it and moved but thats all water under the bridge now.

What fun Lil! That's what these shots are and that makes them all worthwhile. While I do like the mud splashing shots, my favorite is the Synchronized Dressage.
