I don't think you need to worry about the casual observer.
1) You have fans.
2) Publications would write about how you do it and make a big deal of it.
3) In a gallery, the sales people would promote you and your methods as part of the sales pitch.
If you want motion blur as part of your art, great, but don't worry about the uninformed. They will be drawn in by the fabulous images and they will then be informed.

A photo shouldn't need explaining -it should be able to speak for itself...
I am in no way trying to put Frans, or his images, down -I like and admire his work. But as a photographer you have to be able to view your photos from the perspective of the viewing public. If I were to see those last two images hanging on a wall I'd wonder why someone shot a glass sculpture...
One of the pitfalls that macro shooters fall into is in thinking that they can cut corners because they shoot macro. Unfortunately John Q. Public doesn't care about how you take your images -if you tried to explain it their eyes would just glaze over. All they know and understand is what they see hanging on the wall...

Very nice Frans. I saw you did some work with a bubble earlier and someone mentioned smoke effect, and I thought to myself about a video on youtube. Now I'm not sure if you smoke, maybe you know someone that can help you. But check out this link and see how he makes smoke bubbles, I'm guessing you would need a very soapy bubble to do &feature=related" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">this?Might you be able to include that in there? I'm not sure what it would look like with a color droplet hitting it, maybe just cover the color or have a really big contrast. Just tossing another idea out there because this is an incredible machine. Keep it up!

I think you are right. Looking critical is not bad and necessary to improve your work. I will try to add some elements typically in favour of the waterfigures to avoid this confusion.

As for the smoke effect, no I d'nt smoke. Maybe I've to make a smoke machine but my wife d'nt like this smoke smell. I've some other idea's now and I will take into account the previous recommendations. Time to make a few new tools.

I try it always but sometimes it finish otherwise. Just like today, I work a few hours to make a new shape for the waterfigures but the shape was not like I wanted. Advantage is that I now know how to make the shape next time. I have remain only one picture today:
Tomorrow I will try a new shape. Shapes determine the appearance of the waterfigures and to combine them with a splach, one need to by nice vertical. I like to create 3 parts into my picture with the splach on the central figure.

This is the last picture from the series. I will wait now a few weeks. I need a other look for something new but after all this experiments it's hard to find new things again and again.
I just received the confirmation for the delivery of my 22 high powerleds. Next week, I will work on the leds, making the drivers and adjust the controller for the extra 22 channels. I want to test the norrowBeams housings on the leds and use them as extra color light system.

Wow. Cool shots. That last shot is a beauty to me. Personally I prefer the metal cropped out leaving just the water. But great colours and cool shapes - well done.
I don't see a big issue with explaining it's not glass to people either - only takes one word, "splashes". & for this shot, how are all those glass balls hanging there like that?

Yes that's a dilemma. Cropping out the metal portion look sometimes like a cut off the color shapes. I take the pictures with the metal portion and by printouts I look for the best composition, take into account the small canvas need for framing.

To me, the biggest artistic problem with these shots is the metal base. It isn't very attractive in the pictures, but cutting off looks unnatural, too. Of course, these are great shots, but I also know that you are a perfectionist!

Exactly, I've in the past worked on a version where the metal shape was located below the membrane. But technical problems rise around the resonance of the hole system and the sealing. Even if a few drops leak to the loudspeaker is enough to destroy him. Adding more sealing give you to much weight, so the hole wave driving unit must be adapted like wave shape, wave frequence, delay's, synchronisation and volume.
But I believe its time to pick up once again this solution. You bring me on new idea's. Perhaps I've to works a few days to make the new membrane combination but as usually I want to try this. We will see...

Today I design an new metal base and have puted him below the membrane. You see, given critical proposes and informations lead to make thinks better and better. I found a very easy way to put the base metal shape on the bottom. Now its works nice. Here again a few examples:
I've used only one shape type, but with 2 or more it will work also. Metal shapes are needed to separate better the colors and to hold the liquids into a small area. But this shapes are critical concern diameter and depth and especially weight. If the weight change, then the resonance of the system change, so the results. But I've 2 rotary encoder buttons to set the digital value. Once this buttons are correct setted, every new startup give the same results.

I work hard on my highpowerled system as flash. The first parts are ready and into 1 or 2 day's I hope to show the first results. Here a first few of a part of the mechanical components:
On the left upper corner you see an unit be composed of 2 highpower leds. 2 of this units form a blok of 4 leds. The units can be turned in all directions to focus with the lenses on the waterfigures. 11 bloks of each 2 highpower leds make the complete setup.
Do not ask me now at this moment of the hole setup will work I hope it because this experiment is not cheap ( $600). The controller is already adapted to drive the initial tests ( fets, timers, constant current regulator). Later I will add more selective timers to mix the colors.
