Has anyone seen/heard from Samie lately? I know that he has been under the weather for quite some-time now and I really hope he is on the mend.

If anyone knows, please post or send PM.

thanks,
Duncan Staples

Samie has certainly been on my mind lately. I don't have a good way to get in touch with him other than through FM, so I'm hoping that we hear from him soon.

I'm afraid that the news is not good. On reading that you had also received no response to PMs, I checked the CT news. Samie passed away on January 10th.
Photography and indeed the world have lost an exceptional person. As talented and skillful as he was, his kindness was even greater.

Samir Safwat, 65, long-time resident, son and brother of Darienites

Samir Safwat, a long-time Darien resident, died Thursday, Jan. 10, after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

Born in Berkeley, Calif., on April 24, l942, Mr. Safwat lived in Egypt and Sweden before returning to the U.S. after graduating from high school in Sweden.

He graduated from Adelphi University with a degree in music, after which he apprenticed to a fashion photographer in New York City and evenutally opened his own studio, working for the New York Times and Mademoiselle, among others.

After some time, he returned to music and performed as a jazz pianist, performing solo and in groups. He also taught piano for many years in New York City and Connecticut.

He recently exhibited his photographs in the Darien Library.

He is survived by his mother, Cfiv Safwat, and a brother, Omar Safwat, both of Darien.

He was predeceased by his father, Mostafa Safwat.

Donations in Mr. Safwat’s name may be made to Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital, 34 Maple St., Norwalk, CT 06856.

Ironically, in the search that turned up the obituary, I also found this announcement of an exhibit of Samie's photos last fall.

Photography Exhibit at Darien Library:

Samir Safwat will exhibit his photographs in the Main Reading Room at Darien Library through October 29th. Born in California and raised in Sweden and Egypt, Safwat’s interest in photography began during his childhood and was explored throughout his youth. He returned to the United States to attend college, and after college he apprenticed with a number of photographers in New York City, most notably James Moore (Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times Magazine).

Safwat’s first published photograph (in 1965) was a cover shot of John Tchicai, a well-known saxophonist, for the jazz magazine DownBeat. His career has included working as a freelance photographer for Mademoiselle Magazine as well as for the fashion department at The New York Times.

In the past few years, he has become involved in digital photography, enjoying the full control of the photographic process from exposure to the final print.

This exhibit at Darien Library will be a display of the work that Safwat does in his spare time: photographing subjects of personal interest.

I'm looking into it. I found that both Samie and his brother had participated in a Darien
program called The Artists Showcase, so I've written there to ask for help in contacting the family.
