All handheld. All of the aerobatic planes end up high enough that a gimbal really wouldn’t work. Hand held is simpler albeit more work .
Rob
Yeah, kind of figured that, but worth an ask. Airshow I went to last year, I handheld with the Nikon 100-400 and didn't have much issue, other than after a day, it was getting heavy, or my arm is weak. A real debate in my head between chunking the 100-400 and getting the 180-600, or just getting a 1.4x for the 100-400... Outside of an airshow, and not shooting many birds, the 180-600 might be too long, and the 100-400 more versatile while being more compact.

Hey Rob, handheld or with gimbal..?
Hi RWN,
Thant's a question we all answer quite often. The cold hard truth is, none of those tools, monopods, gimbals, special heads, are any help at all in our chosen field. I've tried them all, Wimberly Head included, and all they do is add weight and get in the way. Something that doesn't get talked about much is the fact that we have gentlemen here who hand hold 600's and 800's, some with 1.4's on them, panning with them, raising them vertically hundreds of times in an afternoon, and they bring tack sharp images home, quite a feat.

I hear ya, I'm a wimp with that big ole used 500, that thing is heavy, can't imagine a 600/800...The 70-200 is so small and lightweight.
.
I see we are on page 999 Jim...Page 1000 is not far away
I agree totally. Handheld all the way, even with the 600 F4. Other tools are just getting in the way. I can't swing the camera/lens fast enough at an angle I prefer if they are attached to something. The Nikon 800 PF is super light (relatively), the newer 600 f4s aren't that bad, I can hand hold the 600 F4 to my eye for about a minute+, that's usually more than long enough for actions I want to capture to be over.
Has anyone worked with Squarespace to design a website? My website has been inoperable for a couple of years now because Iit was just too outdated. I'm learning the Squarespace interface and beginning to design a new one. Hoping this isn't a black hole of time that I am going to regret.
Yesterday was "Serve Sunday" at chirch, it's an annual day where all the different ministries, and the entire congregation, head out into the community and serve. Sheila and I went downtown with the homeless ministry. Our pastor asked me if I would shoot our activities and put together a presentation. I'm beginning to dig into the stills and video that I shot over a couple of hours and I think the results will be compelling. Really, we always have plenty of folks to set up and serve the homeless, capturing the ministry is something that I can do to make myself useful while contributing something unique. Yesterday I tried to capture some of the different personalities that were in attendance, and they seemed to really enjoy being photographed.........

Truthfully, I wonder if I even need a website at this stage, but the answer is probably yes.
Been using go-daddy for a few years now and before that it was network solution for the last 30 years.
Just for hosting and domain...My website is cheezy and simple and not fancy but I also don't have a business or have a fkbook account or anything else.
The most of them are from Belgium and a couple I believe from the Netherlands.
The Guys from the Aviation photo crew.
J-A, looks like I may do an air to air shoot with them at the Danish Air Force Show in June! I have been told there should be a fair number of military join-ups, F-16, maybe F-35, and others. It will be cool to shoot some European fighter jets that we don't get to see in the States.

Oh geez Douglas, you gotta say that !!!
That would be so kool...European fighters would be the cake I think and as ugly as the F-35 are that would be kool head on in mid air as well...Fun, Fun.

Have you bought or tried the A9III yet ?

Douglas, you still tempt me to switch with your Sony A1 imagery, beyond excellent!
Jim, you can shoot with a Coke bottle and get great images. Would be interesting to see what the Canon R1 will be. I am fairly certain when Sony introduces the A1II next year (?), it will be a heck of a camera and they will ask $7000 for it. Right now the Nikon Z8 and Z9 are screaming deals, IMO. One can easily get a new Z9 with US warranty for $4200 and a Z8 for $3200. I am buying another Sony A1 (at a big discount from the $6500 MSRP) to replace the one I recently sold, so I can shoot with a pair of identical bodies again. Shooting two different cameras in the same shoots, even within the same brand, turned out to be a real PITA. Shooting two different cameras of two different brands made it even worst, I tried that and wasted a couple thousand bucks selling them.
Thanks Douglas, I feel the same about your talent. One of the couples in our group had car trouble yesterday so we had to pick them up, which threw my Ruth off and I didn’t have time to grab my photo gear, so, relying on the old adage that the best camera is the one that you have with you, I shot with my phone🤣

Bill, I thought about the A9III, for what I shoot, the lower resolution is a big drag. It's hard to go back to 24 MP after 50MP or even 65MP. But the best AF in the business and the 120 FPS are sure tempting, not for $6000 though, $4000, maybe..It would be fun to shoot opposing passes at 120 FPS, so I can't blame the camera if I don't get perfectly positioned opposing pass shots..
That company did manage to get an F-35 to join them for the shoot in California last year. I was told in Europe it's a lot easier to get military join-ups because there are usually quite a few air forces from different countries at those shows, it's easier to find "willing participants", so to speak. They offered me a great deal because the weather issued in Florida. The tickets aren't too bad for flying to Copenhagen, not much more than flying to California.
