OK, kw, "by" China would have been more correct. Yet, even so, any vessel/aircraft/instrumentality bearing the China Gov flag of Xi is in fact still China. Finally got some flyable weather this afternoon so Chandler and I went out and beat up the runway for an hour. Good practice, direct crossing at 12-14 knots, some were pretty, some not so much................

Why wasn't the Fang Fang balloon shot down in Alaska? The head of NORAD said because it posed no threat. I am wondering, if it posed no threat in Alaska, what threat did it pose over the water of S. Carolina? According to Bloomberg (if you can trust it), administration officials kept the discussions low-key, fearing the international incident would scuttle Mr. Blinken’s long-planned trip to China and out of concern for political blowback from Republicans ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The administration was forced to go public on Thursday, however, after the Billings Gazette published a photo of the balloon. If what Bloomberg reported is true, it was a political calculation not to make this intrusion public, let along shooting it down.

I guess if the two civilian photographers in Montana hadn't captured images of the balloon, published them and therefore forced the White House to come out to say something, we may have never known it.

Whats really sad is the China is exploiting the political divide in our country for their own gain. They, like Russia, are try to prove that capitalism, freedom of speach and democracy do not work. This balloon was large and posed no real threat to security. The real threat comes from the stuff we can't see. No matter what the defense dept did it would have been used by one side or the other to scrore political points. And fired up on social media sites by our enemies to fuel division and we fall right into ever time. Sad indeed. We all need to wake up.

Good points, Alan. They can get more through cyber attacks and the spies in our universities and technology companies. But I have zero doubt the CCP will have no hesitation to shoot down an American balloon if one gets to their air space.

Tik tok.....

I think it should have been shot down but I don't know the real info. Maybe recovering it by shooting it over shallow water was the right thing. I do know my father, who was on Omaha Beach on D-Day would be heart broken to see the divide in our country today.

"A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth." Joesph Goebbels

My father and I didn't serve right America. left America or center America. We served all America. That means even the America we didn't agree with. Our grand experiment and our republic will fail if we are not careful. Many are being used by forces they are not even aware of. We are all Americans, We need to wake up before it's to late. Our enemies are loving all this.

"Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated
are confident they are acting on their own free will." Joesph Goebbels

You know things are bad when people believe that one side is abusing babies in pizza parlor basements or Jews are using space lazers to start the fires in California. Sad indeed.

I don't have Tik Tok but it should have been banned longggggggggggg time ago. I am less concerned about its ability to collect personal data, more concerned about how it can use algorithm to direct young viewers to certain types of contents, no better place to covertly brain wash the youth, frog boiling at its best.

I photogrpahed a meeting for one of my corporate clients and they had a high level official from the state dept speak on the collection of data. And the biggest buyer of that data is China.

We are going to apply for visa to visit my wife's ailing parents in south China in a couple months. Now the Chinese visa application requires a lot more information than before, they want to know the high school you went to, the name of the principal of your high school, the university you went to, all the companies you have worked for, your salary and the names of your supervisors, and your SSN....I remember several years ago they stole data of all the federal employees in a hacking. I am sure we do the same thing to them too.

Also wanted to say and I've said this before. Anytime a political party becomes more important than the county it is part of things get very dangerous. History clearly shows that. As a democracy we need at least 2 functioning political parties or this grand experiment will not work.

Probably. But they would like nothing more than for our country and capitalism as we know it here to fail. And they and our other enemies are doing all they can to see that happen. IIRC didn't Marx believe that capitalism and America would fail without the Russians firing a single shot. Sure looking like that prophecy is getting closer to coming true.

How can we ever fix this if no one is willing to admit the other side might be their brother and not satan? When one is in the $HIT one certainly doesn't care about ones political affiliation. Only that they are covering each others 6.

I've fallen for the RF 85/1.2 in my corporate portraiture, the Bokeh is unmatched and immediately recognizable. My clients don't know exactly what it is that they see, but they seem to love it. The photographic team at our Grandson's wedding last summer were working three lenses, the 85/1.2, the 50/1.2 and the 70-200/2.8. I asked one of the photographers how they liked the 50 and they could not have been more excited about it's character. I kind of forgot about it, thinking that I'd never spend $2200 on a 50mm lens, regardless of its miraculous qualities. Well never say never, mine will arrive on Wednesday. The 85 and the 50 have a wonderful ability to make even the most distracting background pleasing and that is worth its weight in gold in corporate portraiture. I've been researching the 50 for several weeks for an upcoming assignment and one just happened to pop up at my Austin supplier so I pulled the trigger. My plan is to put it to work on Wednesday when it arrives.

When I was shooting Canon years ago, I had the 85 f1.2 II, the "grapefruit", even though I have never really shot any portraits, except portraits of birds.. Nikon just released their 85 f1.2 yesterday. A lot of people in the Sonyland are waiting for their version as well. I have a f1.4 which has been sitting in the drawer for two years.

The 1.2's are specialty lenses for sure, but in those instances they produce a result like no other lenses can. Never thought that I'd be buying primes again.

All great points posted here!
I will add a quote from a speech many years ago that nailed the CCP to the wall!
It was the only political speech that I actually heard(via my job) that an idiot, like me, could see, comprehend, and understand 1st hand both as a combat soldier and an federal employee.
1st hand.
"As China grew richer and stronger, we believed, the Chinese Communist Party would liberalize to meet the rising democratic aspirations of its people. This was a bold, quintessentially American idea, born of our innate optimism and by the experience of our triumph over Soviet Communism. Unfortunately, it turned out to be very naïve.

We could not have been more wrong—and this miscalculation is the greatest failure of American foreign policy since the 1930s. How did we make such a mistake? How did we fail to understand the nature of the Chinese Communist Party?

The answer is simple: because we did not pay heed to the CCP’s ideology. Instead of listening to what CCP leaders were saying and reading what they wrote in their key documents, we closed our ears and our eyes. We believed what we wanted to believe—that the Party members were communist in name only.

Let us be clear, the Chinese Communist Party is a Marxist-Leninist organization.......As interpreted and practiced by Lenin, Stalin, and Mao, communism is a totalitarian ideology.

Under communism, individuals are merely a means to be used toward the achievement of the ends of the collective nation state. Thus, individuals can be easily sacrificed for the nation state’s goals. Individuals do not have inherent value under Marxism-Leninism. They exist to serve the state; the state does not exist to serve them."

There is much more said but this is the "jist" of our politicians and some military reasoning( I am VERY sorry to say that) in dealing with the CCP.

Above has NO bearing on the people of China! They are fine people in a bad situation.
Dan
