Hi Jim,

How you been doing? I noted your brief trip into the real estate development business. Oh, and the landscaping. What are you going to do with all that spare time?

Pic above is from my way back machine. I’m not sure I will ever go to an airshow again. Here in the UK I fear that boat may have sailed for good. Oh well.

Good Morning/Afternoon Nick,

I'm "doing", thanks for asking! We are having a UK kind of weather week so it's given me time to post process several projects and organize my office at home. The new Pyracantha seem to be settling in well and all the rain has been a help. Planting them was a bit of a chore because the irrigation system in that bed froze, or I broke it pulling the old ones out with my Landcruiser So there was a bit of trenching and pvc work to be done, it is all back to normal now. The amount of landscape in Texas that needs to be replaced is pretty incredible, everywhere you look as you drive around all you see is frozen shrubs. The Holly varieties survived nicely, but most everything else is toast.

I've had a number of assignments over the past couple of weeks. Tomorrow is the start of The Byron Nelson Golf Tournament, which is being held on a good client's TPC course for the first time. He asked me if I would shoot it for him. Something different and fun, "variety" and all that...........

Do you think airshows are done in your part of the world, or are you just done shooting them? Things are beginning to return to some normalcy here, at least in Texas. I've been involved in numerous luncheons and groundbreaking events, it's clear that people are anxious to put this thing behind them. I captured a groundbreaking for two new hi-rise office buildings on Monday, pretty good sized group and no one was masked up, it felt good. I remember when the powers that be were saying that handshaking and hugs were probably gone forever, I'm happy to say that was a pessimistic and inaccurate statement. Sun 'n' Fun sold 30% more tickets than they had ever sold and the attendees, by all accounts, were anxious to live their lives again, mask free. I still see the occasional person driving alone in their car with a mask on, but that is probably more because they have a particular health issue than general fear of the virus at this point.

Jennifer and the kids are expecting their mini horses to give birth in the next few weeks, and the puppies are growing by leaps and bounds. She got off her tractor the other afternoon because there was some commotion in the duck run, seems that a six foot snake of some variety got in and had her favorite duck for lunch, she was pretty sad about that,"circle of life" and all. I'm teaching her how to alter that circle a bit with a 9mm.

Hope you and Thea are having a great week!

JW

Oh, P.S. What did you build for your new computer?

9mm is handy on the hip, but a shotgun is more effective! Takes the head right off with the first shot!

Good Morning Ray!

Yes, I ordered her a Henry 410 Lever Action, but I'm a bit concerned about "collateral damage" in close quarters..........

Have you thought anymore about your camera conundrum? I'd send you the R5 for a few weeks but I seem to be using it more and more.Normally this is the point where I would order a second R5, but I'm holding off because I (supposedly) have an R3 coming this summer.

Have a great day on the farm!

Has anyone jumped into a Mac with the M1 chip? I need to update both my MacBook Pro and my iMac's , but I am afraid of the growing pains associated with the new chipset. Many of my Final Cut plug ins aren't compatible with the M1 yet and that is a deal breaker. I can still order a non M1 MacBook Pro, but the new iMacs are all M1.

Nan bought a new M1 MacBook Air right after they came out. Seems to work well but she doesn't do any heavy image lifting with it, so probably not much help for you.

Supposedly the "M2" is around the corner with a lot more performance, the rumors say.

I'm still on my three Mac Pros (two towers and one trash can). But I don't do video

Camera:

I had to send in my 7D II for supplemental repair. Since I got it back the CF card slot recording is intermittent. Some events it will record and some it won't. Canon asked to send in the two CF cards I used in it. They worked fine in my 5DS R. We will see.

I have seen more sport guys using the R5/R6 cameras and loving them. They seem to be happy with the 12800 ISO. I like the 1Dx III files better, maybe I have a little higher expectation, I don't know. I may ook at the mirrorless.

I see Canon has added the 1Dx III to the refurbished list.

M1 Mac:

I bought an M1 MBP 13" last December. While PS and LR continue to run via Rosetta, it does seem much faster. I got the 16 GB RAM version. I really like it and I can't wait for the M1 updates for LR & PS. The down side is it is limited to two TB/USB 3 interfaces. Not really a problem for me because the battery life is excellent. I have no problem taking it to a game to upload and process 500-600 photos with only 50% battery charge remaining. Since Apple is limiting RAM to what comes soldered, you may have to wait for your video processing. I have the 16 GB version and it is faster than my wife's 32 GB 14" MBP.

Another good thing about the 13" MBP is how cool it runs. I have processed many photos with the laptop on my bare legs wearing shorts and it never gets hot, or warm, usually it is at room temperature.

Golf:

I got to shoot a couple of guys going to the state golf tourney this morning. Made me want to take up the game again. (I know, he is not facing the fairway, but the portable buildings would have been in the background, or the parking lot or golf cart storage. I thought the fairway was a better backdrop.)

How come Colonial gave up the Byron Nelson?

I do believe that the III has considerably less noise than the R5 at high ISO settings. I love the R5, but the III is a professional machine! Anxious to see what the R3 brings to the table. I ordered the EF version of the 600 series III, just see no advantage to the RF version.

No, but thank you. I sent it in Monday and they just sent me an email and they have already jumped on it and it will be back in three days. I will use my 5D III for the games this Thursday-Saturday. I would use the 5DS R but the files are so large and take a long time to upload to the web.

There was an interesting paragraph included with their status update telling me they were covering the charges:

"The Canon U.S.A., Inc. Repair Facility may repair your equipment or exchange it for refurbished equipment of the same model, or for new or refurbished equipment of an equivalent model to your equipment, with the same or additional features. Recovered, manufactured, repaired and/or recycled parts may be used in connection with such repair."

I have never seen that paragraph before. I have seen the 'Canon Loyalty' program on a status update for repair when the repair is nearly half the cost of the used market price. Kind of like Cessna replacing a failed part with one from an unserviceable plane in the back lot.

I am sure they simply knocked something loose when they replaced the main dial a couple of weeks ago. They have been very responsive, at least I have no reason to complain, things do happen.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the update!

Bad though the horticultural thing has been for you, it serves as a timely reminder to we UK folks just how lucky we are to have our mild and moderate climate. Even so, some parts have had overnight frost – in May! Eek!

From my perspective the airshow situation in the UK is questionable. The Covid thing has largely stopped everything – but that will pass. Of more lasting concern is the aftermath of Shorham and other accidents. The CAA have been forced to tighten some of the rules – rightly so IMHO. So planning and assessment of display lines and boxes have come in for attention. Result is Seaside shows have been moved further off shore and show line centres / boxes have been displaced. Farnborough was apparently rendered very disappointing due to display box displacement.

Another big rule change is that a display pilot must do their annual display authorisation check, flying the same ‘plane as they are going to display. Prior to Shorham, there was an easement to that aircraft type rule that resulted in a person being able to practice and authorise in a Vans RV-8, then display a Hawker Hunter……. Given the huge performance difference I’m not convinced it’s possible to fly a Hunter display in an RV-8 – or an RV-8 display in a Hunter. Anyway, the result is that the cost model has changed, especially for those who must now practice and authorise flying ex military swept wing jets.

What with health issues and the Covid thing I’ve not been to an airshow since August 2017. I’m not sure that I can swing the 100-400 all day any more. However, when the restrictions ease I may get our to our local airfield and get a little Spitfire action. Webeseee.

Rebuilding the PC is an ongoing project. Back in 2012 ish, I built myself a box to store and edit my images – stills only. I used a very nice Dell monitor that I got in 2008 ish. With a few mid life upgrades that machine continues to serve me well. However, I’m clearly on borrowed time and the cracks are beginning to show! The back light on the Dell is fading and uneven so that has to be replaced. However I had a disk in my RAID 5 array reporting sick. Oh and my backups are not unified – that is, my storage is bigger than any of my backup disks – so backups are split across several disks. The failing disk was the last of my originals, so I’ve had my moneys worth.

So… I got a new 8TB usb drive for a backup. I then replaced the 4 x 3TB drives in the RAID array with 3 x 4TB. Getting the Intel RST software to see my new drives on my now unsupported, end of life Z68 chipset motherboard took …… a long time - as did reloading the data. Eventually I got it all working smoothly. I then fitted a 2TB SSD to act as my main work area – copy of current RAW files, Lightroom catalogue, finished images, etc. I put my Windows system drive on an SSD some time ago along with a small SSD for cacheing the RAID array. I’ve now fitted a GPU card so I can use the nVidia GPU extensions in my Adobe apps, and to drive a higher res screen. Shortly I plan to get a new screen and retire the Dell. Then it will be a new motherboard, CPU, double the memory, and an M2 Pci stick for my system drive. Yes …. an old axe that’s had two new heads and three new handles.

I had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful Gulfstream G-550 last week for a client of mine. The owners are getting a new, Gulfstream G-550. This one is 11 years old. Certainly doesn't look it on the outside or the inside. The maintenance technician told me this bird has been all over the world, and he had photos to prove it.

Still don't know how I'd feel being inside a small tube for over 10 hours on some of their flights. At least if you are flying on a B-777, or B-787, you can get up and walk around BOTH aisles, during the flight.

Yeah, I had a drive failure this weekend in my 4 bay RAID 5 server. Amazon got me a replacement drive in about three hours. Put it in and it rebuilt the array over night. My array was 4 x 4TB but I replaced the failed drive with an 8TB drive with the plan to replace the rest of the drives over the next month or so. All the drives have a powered on time of over 5 years so I figure the rest are waiting to die. And this way at the end I'll have doubled my backup storage (which is what I use the server for).

I do have a backup of the RAID array as well, but it's on AWS' S3 storage and it would take a while to get data back down if I lost the local array. The S3 storage is just an easy way of getting an off site backup.

I've worked with computers since I started programming in 1969 and for the life of me I can't figure out what I found so interesting about them back then...

As we have discussed so many times over the years, this technology stuff is a never ending journey. I'm about to order a non M1 MacBook Pro that will be loaded to the gills. My guess is that it will last me five or six years but who knows? MotionFX makes about half my plug ins and they just announced that all their plug ins are M1 compatible. PixelFilm Studios make the other half and none of theirs are ready yet. OWC is struggling to keep up with Softraid compatibility and that protects 2 Petabytes of my files so that's pretty important to me. One has to be very careful upgrading these days.

The 75th Anniversary F/16 photographic team is still putting the final touches on our main creation, but here's a little preview. This shoot took 8 hours of hard work, brainstorming and creativity, and it was most certainly a three man project. We agreed that wherever these images show up, there will be three names attached, Jeremy Boyd, Chandler Feagin and me, because without the dedication of all three, it would not have happened. Special attaboy to Lt. Colonel Jeremy Boyd, because who gets unfettered access to a huge hangar filled with F/16 fighter jets?!

Well…. I can see where the time went! Shuffling the jet back and forth to get it positioned correctly with the floor markings would take a lot of painstaking effort. Oh, and don’t get me started on keeping reflections and hot spots out of the canopy! Bravo!
