Check the wing's FB page or website, they will probably have a flight path there, ours did for our flyovers here, where they went by several hospitals. The times they gave were +/- 5 minutes, they said. What aircraft do they fly? Ours have the F-16 and they didn't go racing by, but they still moved out of view quickly.
You'll probably want your 100-400mm zoom. If you had a second body, you could do the zoom and the 500.
OOPS, that was yesterday... hope you got decent shots!

Hi all -
I haven't shot fighter jets before, looking for some advice for this evening. I'm in Madison, WI, and the local 115th Fighter Wing is doing a flyover of Madison (see photo for all of the details I have). I'm thinking that I'll try to find the highest elevation/best NW view shooting location I can to the SE of the hospitals, since I don't know their exact planned flight path, other than they will be coming from the NW about 45 minutes before sunset.
I have at my disposal a Canon 5DIV, 70-200 f/2.8L IS v2, 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS v2, 500 f/4L IS v1, 1.4x TC v3, and 2x TC v3. I'm tentatively planning on going with the 500mm, either with or without the 1.4x TC, depending where I set up. Curious if anyone has any tips, shutter speed and aperture advice, etc. Thanks in advance!

Nice shot Jay! I have been thinking of testing my Sony A7RIV and the 200-600 at Dulles Airport to see how it works on jets (the combo didn't do well for the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds flyover), but the flights will be pretty scarce. For those who are not familiar with the China Airlines in your picture, it's not an airline of the communist mainland China, it's an airline of the free China (Taiwan).
Thanks!
For the moving aircraft, I'd recommend an f-stop of f/8.0, that has always worked well for me.
Due to lock down I’ve been unable to go out with my camera for seven weeks. Champing at the bit to get back into the nightscapes thing. We’ve had an easement of the rules here in the UK so I’m hoping to go out tonight.
Here is the result of a learning exercise I did previously. I did about 30 exposures in all. Ten for the stars and the rest for the torch (flash light) stuff. In the end I used about half of the torch shoots in the attached.
Been a good event, except last year either the FAA rep needed drug testing or there was a serious mix-up in what the FAA said and the site rep(s) told the photographers.
ya'll have paid a heavy price, Sir, so I'm glad the rules are changing some so you can stretch out a bit. After awhile there gets to be a paradox as to restrictions and their efficacy. We are here in the States seeing some reductions in the worst areas hit. Some of the private, law-enforcement related listserves I'm on, however, are reporting significant increases in suicide, substance abuse relapse, and, most especially, increases in frequency and intensity of domestic violence incidents, especially toward children. No such thing as a free lunch, I reckon.
I expect a couple of results from the lockdowns, once the restrictions are relaxed and thing return to "normal". The first is an increase in the divorce rate (or at least divorce filings), the second will start occurring late November (and beyond).
Hopefully the second result will occur more often than the first.
Probably not so good, Jerry. An event (music festival) that I've gone to in mid September got cancelled due to the pandemic. I suspect the Dayton Airshow is also going to get cancelled, even though they currently state they are looking to reschedule it... And one city's music venue has cancelled its entire season of shows, too. http://fraze.com/2020-season-closing-announcement/

I wonder what the chances are of this happening on July 24/25

Be back in a few days, this week has been a little bit of a challenge and I'll explain later. Suffice it to say that I now have the cardiologist that my friends have been urging me to get with for several years.
