Four 10TB Iron Horse Seagate drives arrived yesterday for a new OWC RAID enclosure I bought, one was DOA unfortunately, so I have to wait until Monday to create my newest 40TB Softraid unit. B&H shot a replacement out the minute I called them, great customer service!

Got to spend a little time with my Buddy Burton Gilliam today, amidst all the action. You might remember Burton's starring role in the most politically incorrect movie ever made........."Blazing Saddles". He's a character and a lot of fun to hang with...............

I'd like to get some input on a hard drive situation, although I think I already know the answer.
My backup needs are pretty modest. I have the hard drive on my laptop and two WD My Book 4TB drives. Sequence is Laptop backed up to Drive 1, and that gets backed up to Drive 2.
Unfortunately earlier this week I managed to knock Drive 2 off the table and on to the floor. Now when I plug it into the USB port on my laptop the drive lights up, but Windows Explorer doesn't see it (although Device Manager does). Computer Management shows the drive as not initialized, but when I try to initialize I get an I/O error.
This drive is toast, right? I might as well upgrade to the next size up, so I'm looking to replace it with a 6TB My Book. I can get one for $150.
My impression is that you have accurately assessed your predicament. But don't trust me, I erased a 24 TB RAID Array late this afternoon by mistaking it for a new array I need to initialize in SoftRaid..... Multiple back ups are a wonderful thing!

It may just be that the housing apparatus took a hit, and not the drive itself. If it's out of warranty, I'd open it up and plug the hard drive into a desktop PC if you have one, or one of the external trays that are out there. I've got a Thermaltake that will utilize two SATA hard drives at a time.
Thanks Laura. I may give that a try, although I am not sure I want to trust it anyway given the whack it took.
I also don't want to spend a lot of time messing around, as right now Drive 1 is the only place my older photos are stored, with no backup.
You all probably recall that, years ago, I had LiveBooks design my website. The process wasn't inexpensive, but they did a good job and overall I have been pretty happy with the, The last year or two some hiccups began to pop up, they dropped email hosting, became more difficult to contact, etc. LiveBooks was purchased by another company and now I'm in a position where I need to redesign my site with the new company (old site utilizes flash) and or go another direction. After looking at the process, the costs up front and the ongoing costs, I'm thinking about designing a new site using Squarespace. I enrolled last night and began putting the initial elements together. Anyone been down this road? Squarespace gets great reviews for beautiful designs and wonderful features, I figured for a couple hundred bucks and some time (probably quite a bit of time) it might be a good idea to get control of this whole process myself.
Truthfully, I haven't touched my site in a couple of years and it was probably time to begin anew anyway.

A dropped drive is a no-no to continue with. What Laura suggested is for retrieval only (if you need to), not continuing usage.
Open it, take all the platters and hang them in your car's rear-view mirror , and if you have bad feeling towards someone, hit him/HER with the HDD body, it does the job perfectly

Do you really have that kind of time? That's the only drawback I see to doing it yourself.
What if you gave Chandler an assignment to make the first cut?

Thanks, yes, that is my feeling too. I don't need any recovery, but I might try it just for fun.
Not quite sure when it will happen, but there's another trip to Massachusetts in the future for me. Arrangements have yet to be made, though I know the burial will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, down on the Cape. She's now with her husband, and two of her sons. Rest in peace.
Spent all day today organizing and calculating my additions and deletions for the business personal property tax people. Something a lot of people don't realize, or don't want to realize, is, if you have a photography business, or any business, every piece of equipment is taxable, every year. They depreciate it, but they want a piece of each and every bit of gear you use in the production of your product. In the case of Collin County, they want 2.65% of the value of your business use equipment. Just one more bite a the apple.
Somehow, not sure how, I missed Starbuck's CEO making a fool of himself again at their annual shareholder's meeting this year. "If you support traditional marriage, Starbuck's does not want your business......!" Now, regardless of one's stance on that issue, why in the brown eyed world would you make a statement like that? I am constantly amazed at the flexibility of the definition of "tolerance". Can you imagine the fall out if a conservative corporate leader said anything like that? The world would ignite and implode and he/she would be characterized as the very pinnacle of evil a hater of the highest order, instead he gets to go on unscathed, unassailed to pedal his wares.
Fortunately I weaned my self from their iced green tea a few years ago when the same knucklehead issued the edict that barristas were required to engage every customer in a discussion on race relations. "Ya just can't make this stuff up folks.............!"
Under the heading, "It's a matter of time..." I have it on good authority that a UPS 767 filed a report documenting a very near miss with a drone at 1500' on approach to Houston. That's only 1100' over FAA altitude limit, not to mention flying a drone in airspace that only the NSA could get approval for. Man, there's some mentally challenged folks out the among us.
Mr. Wilson, do you think all the crazies live in DC? I have it on good authority (personal history) there are a lot of crazies in Houston...I often wonder if 200 miles is far enough away.
200 miles, on a country estate, and being well armed, is about the best you can do Eddie Ray, so you have it knocked. Are you home yet? What wonderful trip for you two!
Yes, we made it home the 1st of May. It was a great trip. Lot of world left to see!
We have been hosting some old high school buds over the last couple of years. They leave the farm rethinking their retirement home. Something about 5 hour talks on the front porch...
