p.406 #1 · Mustang Air to Air: The Sequel

Well my new "Toy" arrived today, it's going to be a journey learning to use this new body. Manual alone is more reading than I have done in a year but looking forward to the lessons. Now the real question is "will my favorite photo subject" tolerate me? I already hear the "Dad, you playing with that camera again?" YEP

The really cool thing that happened as I opened the box, took some pictures, and such was the hour of conversation that Annie and I had. To have had 1/2 the understand of life in my youth as this 17 year old has today would truly be a gift. It's such a joy when your children get to a point that they can teach you just as you have been teaching them.

Take Care all, and thanks again Jim.
Dan

First thing you need to do is fix the copyright comments in the camera

Congrats on buying Jim's camera.

Enjoy Dan! That comes with lifetime tech support for you and Joe Eady so let me know if I can help. And yes, go into the minuend change the copyright/contact information to your custom info. If you need help on that let me know.

The 1DXII is a beast of a camera with more features than most any owner will ever learn, it encourages you to shoot well just by how it feels in your hands and the crispness of its actions. The autofocus has to be experienced to be believed, your keeper rate will go through the roof.

I'm looking forward to the III, or rather Chandler is Rumor has it that the 5DSR mirrorless sequel is going to be happening mid-2020, if that's true Canon is going to have a very good year.

Jim and Laura,

First I have to update Canon EOS tool software on my compuker to recognize this new beast. Then with a second step I will get after changing all that copyright/contact info and such.

But as everyone knows when you get a new toy, camera in this case you must:

A) Rip open package
B) Find first available lens
C) Grab any available memory card
D) PLAY

End result is you will have a smile on your face and your photo subject will be mildly annoyed which seems to be a normal state for 17 year old's so that did bother me at all!

Jim, if you start making money off Annie's posted pictures due the copyright thing I'll send you an address for her college fund!

About that auto focus, I started reading about that last night. Oh my, we will be talking, mostly on how to reset factory settings as I "optimize" it with my engineering thoughts/expectations! One thing I have always struggled with my on current equipment is tracking moving targets, like the puppies in the yard and several sports activities. Sure, I get 30-50% keepers most times but I am sure this will up the game dramatically.

And Oh My, it's a big body,
Dan

PS - Jim, did I get your camera or Chandler's?

Hi Dan,

I have the camera set on center spot autofocus with tracking I think, shoot a bit with it the way it's set and see if you like it. Yes, if you read the manual the autofocus options will turn your mind into a pretzel............."Don't Read The Manual"

Chandler always uses the 1DXII's because he likes the machine gun style frame rate, so if you asked him, both of them were his

UHOH, the geek in me is

A) Rip open package
B) Menu Dive and check out all the settings
C) Find first available lens
D) Grab any available memory card
E) PLAY

My subjects for camera/lens testing don't complain though (unless they are hungry)

Can't help you with the Canon stuff though, I'm a Nikon shooter.

Jim,

You have started something now with this camera thing!!!!

I must be Bi-Polar or something, flipping between if it isn't broke don't touch it and OCD. So last night I went to Canon website to up load newer EOS Utility so I could change not just copyright but talk to the camera, down load photos, bla, bla, bla. Only to learn I haven't touched any of that stuff since 2013 when I bought the 6D! So I un-installed all the Canon software, deleted all the old files, and went out to Canon to down load, install all the new stuff. All is working now and all is good.

And to be clear, I did this all "JUST TO KEEP LAURA HAPPY ON THE COPYRIGHT THINGY!" Picking on you Laura!

Later,
Dan

I was in Denver last week, photographing a Lear Jet for a client of mine, when I got a notification from another client, that my photograph was on the cover of one of the industry trade publications.

So at about 18 degrees in Denver, I was doing the "happy dance" inside myself.

I can remember back in 1994, looking at my first copy of Executive Controller magazine and thinking to myself, "how in the world does someone get to photograph these beautiful aircraft?" Now, by the grace of God, I am pursuing my passion of photography and airplanes. I am so grateful for God putting me in this position and will be forever thankful for the people who have helped me with my business.

I wish to each and everyone of you on this thread, a very prosperous and successful 2020!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.I'm used to being picked on, remember, my managers and supervisors are postal employees...

Before you change anything, I'm sure Canon has a way to back up the settings that are there now. That would be the first thing to do.

Speaking of copyright thingy, I have to change the year in my cameras now... since it's now 2020

This year was the first time I remembered to change the copyright year before taking a Doh! pic.

Dan, great idea and woodwork!

Dave, love the photo of the group formation ring around the round lake! Great planning!

The eagles from the other day. Both of them stared down the pipe at me. Tree they were in was across the river, maybe a three lane highway across at that point.

That white backdrop really makes those images Laura! Wonderful!! Wonder what they would look like in B&W, pretty abstract and cool I would guess. Well done!

p.406 #14 · Mustang Air to Air: The Sequel

Today was sporting. A new client had a rush aerial project they needed, no challenges at all, it's been zero/zero and raining for days but it cleared in the wee hours this morning. Weather wasn't the only fly in the ointment, the site they needed shot sits squarely on the glideslope to 31L at Love. Class B around here requires a minimum 24 hour advance notice if one has a prayer of getting the flight approved, add the fact that we need to be circling on the approach path and approval chances drop like a rock no matter how much notice is given. The dicey thing is, you get "approval" to come ups to the edge of Class B and ask for clearance to the site, but they may well tell you to go pound sand and you are on the hook for the cost of the flight only without the hoped for imagery. My helicopter service is very respected and the young lady I scheduled the flight with is a great pilot. We have a joint reputation with ATC for getting in, getting our shots and getting out, so our approval rate as a team is pretty good. As if all this wasn't challenging enough, the winds were forecast to be 15G25 at flight time and they were every bit of that on the surface and more than that at our assigned altitude. Great day to bolt a Kenyon 6x6 on the 5DSR just for insurance.

I'm working through the images as we speak because the client and their graphic design department are tapping their collective fingers waiting for their shots. Happy to say, they are incredibly beautiful and sharp as a tack......whew!

Thanks Jim, that "white backdrop" is the typical Ohio winter sky. Went from shorts wearing on Friday to a whopping 18°F/-7.78°C this morning, but still no snow on the ground. I'll have to try a conversion to B&W later.

As all might imagine I am still playing with the new to me camera. It's a powerful tool as you can see below in the two images.

1) Photo of my slightly annoyed subject while I was playing with auto focus settings has a real "Don't bother me, I'm concentrating kind of mood".

2) With a small change to the drive setting we learned the value of 14 fps! Grumpy can giggle

Dan

I'm concentrating and not in the mood for this...............

14 fps can even make Grumpy Giggle!!!
