Whew! I'm so glad I'm no longer trying to keep up with the gear race. I swear, the camera in using now is the last one I'll buy. (Is there a time limit for editing that comment?)
There's a statement that will catch up and bite you........
I remember way back when, several people said, "It is physically impossible to cram more than 4.25MP on a camera sensor.....this is the last camera anyone will ever need!"
As for me, I know that I will most likely chase the cutting edge of image quality until, as Laura so accurately put it, "They find me face down with my boots on".
Truthfully, I stopped striving for higher quality images for my clients years ago, they are very happy, I am under no delusion that I am doing it for anyone but me. I still glance at the Phase One and Hasselblad emails I get and think.......should I, maybe? But then I read all the reviews and the problems, coupled with the cost and it makes no sense at all. Every day one manufacturer or another is chipping away at that 100MP sensor market, Fuji at 105MP, Sony at 61MP, Canon and Nikon will follow sooner or later.
Mirrorless cameras from Nikon, Canon and Sony have reached a level of sharpness and dynamic range that's nothing short of amazing, now add a 61MP sensor, eye recognition autofocus with a zillion sensors, it's a great time to be an image maker!
Another from arrivals today. These guys had to make multiple hops to make it across Europe from Romania for the show. Left early this morning and were one of the last arrivals of the day at after 6pm.

I know you're right and if I wasn't retired I'd be all over the new Sony. First I'd need to buy a new computer with about three times the RAM I now work with.
I wonder if there's going to be a point where images become too perfect, too sharp, too detailed. This business has certainly undergone a transformation over the past 20 years.
Sure has Brent! There is already an image that fits your description, it's the abomination called "HDR". I laughingly tell people who ask me about it, "HDR, that's latin for I couldn't shoot it right in the first place......"
Truthfully, it's all very much a matter of personal taste and preference, combined with how large one is going to produce it and finally the visual acuity of the viewer. I quit buying those $100 audio Monster Cables years ago cuz I can barely hear Sheila across the family room same thing applies to big prints.
And you are absolutely right about chasing your tail with larger capture, bigger hard drives, faster computers, they're all in cahoots!

What I would think about in this race of "higher MPs" is: it would be like when using Red's 8K cams. It would be easier just to crop to 4K than to use a zoom lens to have it "in frame", otherwise unless I am spying on the most recent military technology to have the rivets particles in detail for my employer, or I am printing a picture to cover the 2000-mile long Great Wall of China, I would not even blink an eye on that
Just saw a rumor that Canon might be putting in body stabilization in the upcoming 1DX III. That leads me to believe they are going to put some video updates in that camera as well.
Spent yesterday and today all over DFW airspace doing helicopter work. This was a grab shot on the way to the next paying site.............98 Degrees with winds 15-25 out of the southeast....................."but it was a dry heat".........
And the times they tried to abandon Fenway... fans let them have it and then some! I wear my Yaz #8 shirt to work frequently Quite a few RS fans where I am.

It's been very frustrating watching the Red Sox this year. But even when they are not playing well, we always have Fenway. This from last weekend.
