I was let go the Monday before Christmas. Been out of work since, and the new mail carrier told me positions were open, so I applied to a couple positions. Been applying to hospitals here, but it was just announced that the larger of the two networks here is closing one of their hospitals at the end of this year, so there will probably be an influx of aides out on the market. I hadn't finished nursing school yet, been out of school since Dec 2015.

There's a whole list of things under Delivery, Distribution and Retail that I qualify for, but I applied for a couple carrier positions. Camera gear lends itself nicely for practice carrying a mail bag

Darn, I'm sorry to hear that after all the work you've put into it. Probably not ideal, but my niece lives in north Cincinnati and commutes to Dayton for work. Perhaps there's more opportunity down south or closer to Columbus? Hope you get something you like soon..

Working on it, as fast as I can. Waiting for background and driving history checks to be done, had to go get documents out of the safe deposit box so I can get the extra points for veteran preference (I get them derived) My resume is at least getting me interviews so far, but the interviews go nowhere afterwards. I really hadn't considered USPS till the mail carrier told me, figured they never had openings. If I do get it, I'll get exercise and my steps in!

Anyone think I should bring my camera bag to the interview if/when it happens?

A buddy of mine recently took a job as a mail carrier. I think he is enjoying it. I hope you get a similar outcome.

Meanwhile, here is a Cessna making a steep takeoff out of Reklaw fly-in last October.

Spent a couple of hours getting more familiar with my Sony FS7/Odyssey 7Q+ set up. Please pardon the couple of hiccups in my panning technique, winds were G30 and the FS7 with a Canon 200-400 on the front presents a lot surface .

This is dumbed down to H.264 so it's manageable, the original clip is 10TB in 4K RAW.

Loved the final shots - wow, nearly cut myself on the sharpness. 10TB? Struth, one sequence would almost fill may entire storage! ... I have a 4T personal cloud and 7.5TB off line storage and 1TB online... Enough for an old fella, like me.

Couldn't afford a new one so a pre loved Mk1 one from eBay dealer - fingers crossed it is a sharp copy...

Thanks to everyone for pointing me to the best all round walkabout lump of glass

Whoops! I posted that after a long day, reg file size on the original 4K RAW clip rendered in Apple ProRes 444 HQ is about 10GB, not TB. The Odyssey 7Q+ has two 1TB SSD's in it that are in replaceable trays. Those two SSD's will fill in about 19 minutes when shooting 4K RAW at 60 fps, higher frame rates obviously fill them up more quickly, and the 7Q+/FS7 combo allows up to 240 fps slo-mo which really fills them fast.

Something else I learned yesterday us that the atmospheric effect of a long lens doesn't destroy cinema like it does still images. The FS7 has a Super 35 sensor which gives it a crop factor of 1.6. The Canon 200-400 with the 1.4 in use brings that focal length to over 800mm. The imagery at that focal length on a bright, sunny/windy day is still sharp and very usable, it has a shimmer certainly, but nothing like the effect one gets with still work. I'll post some clips later this afternoon when I get back from my assignment.

Funny, I was a little frustrated by my panning technique yesterday and the wind wasn't helping, but based on the fact that I was panning with 30 ponds of gear at 860mm, I guess I'll allow myself a little grace in the learning curve.....

Storage space is always an issue Donald, and 4K RAW footage definitely exascerbates the problem. Third quarter 2017 I broke the “Petabyte” barrier and that adjustment gave me about a 20% margin for expansion, which is rapidly diminishing. I’ll probably add another 100 TB’s before summer.

I am seeking a wee bit of advice please
My 28 - 300 L just sold on ebay for a reasonable price. That gives this poor old pensioner a few notes in the pocket to buy a general purpose Canon 'L' lens.

I have looked around and got my eye on two possibilities:
a) EF 24 - 105 f/4 L (105mm but f/4)
or
b) EF 24 - 70 f/2.8 L (2.8 but only 70mm)

I will only be doing general holiday & walk-about photos - nothing too serious. But I am looking for a sharp lens.

Advice and opinions welcome - Thanks

Donald

In case you are still pondering lens options:

RE the 24-105 L, I've seen some great shots from that lens --- few were mine.

Here's a wild card on the 24-70: the Sony RX100 V.

Having outlived my prime I'm downsizing too. I shoot Canon, and your Nikon is a candidate to replace my gear.

Last year while considering the 24-70 II I saw images from a friends Sony RX III. I was amazed by the IQ from a camera that is almost too small to hold. Interestingly all five versions, from original RX100 to the V, are available so you can pick features and price point.

Tip --- the most important feature is a wrist strap.

All the Best

Chuck
