That definitely works Nick! Do you have one with spray from the board?
Thanks Jim! Sadly I don’t have a spray from board shot in that sequence. He launched (took off?) into his trick on the far side of a wave, and came out “clean” - so only drips! These folks are very local to me and are a shooting opportunity too good to miss. Long story short, the geography, prevailing winds, tides, and life conspire to make the window of that opportunity quite small. I will have to wait for longer summer evenings and just hope they come out to play late enough for me to get them in some sweet light. In the meantime I’m shooting due south – dodging either side of the sun - with the predictable, harsh results that you’ve seen previously. The image I posted was a result of me getting all bent out of shape and frustrated – pull down the exposure and blaze away – sun or not! Turns out to be a promising technique – I just need to make sure that I pick a subject with a few patches of fluorescent colour on their gear. Oh, and some spray as well!
I need to refine other parts of my technique as well. The nine point centre cluster of focus points often tends to bias the focus toward the water / waves in front of the subject. Looks like I need to try centre point focus. The other conundrum is shutter speed. I’m not sure I’m getting the water spray quite right. So far I’ve used 1/2000 or 1/2500. Do you think that’s too fast - or too slow – or what? Under is one of my better efforts – so far.
You're doing fine, great in fact! That type of subject matter has a lot of hit and miss in it. I use the center spot focus pretty much exclusively, but honestly, there are so many customizable options these days that it's a little scary to begin fiddling with it. Shooting into the sun, while it's always been kind of a no no, presents some very cool light opportunities, which you seem to be discovering. Keep on exploring it, you'll get some great stuff.
Beautiful King Air Bud! Great talking with you this morning. Keep me posted on our mon/tues possibility, I just got a call to shoot two Boeings and an Airbus next week, but they are bringing them to me, so I'll be around.
