It really is Gero. I wasn't looking for a dynamic range test but that series of images was really the acid test. The R5II, great as it is, couldn't come close to reproducing the spread. Then again, the Hasselblad was going to lag a bit when the action in the sky sped up, just different tools.
He is very excited about it, his Dad and I are curating it for him until he gets a little bigger. He was bouncing off the walls earlier this week when his school asked him if he would be the photographer for an outing to The Heard Museum in McKinney. No one outside the class can attend so he is a bit anxious about how to shoot that, but I'm going to walk him through the process and he will do fine. He asked me yesterday if I ever get anxious about a photo shoot...........................Show more →
I am not a "social media" person since my "ID" was stolen in the "solarwinds hack".
IG does allow me a few minutes without "entry". The young man has the knack for anything technical Jim! It is in his "bloodline"!
Glad he is involved!
Tell him "UD" sez "heh"!
Dan
Thanks! His Dad has gotten involved in all of this and he's redesigned his Instagram layout. I'll post a link. JIII did a great job documenting his school's field trip to the nature center yesterday. The challenge was a good one for him, we discussed possible compositions the night before his shoot, kids, animals, displays, and he did a good job capturing all of those. He was pretty nervous about the responsibility, I told him that I always get nervous, use it to make you better. I'm proud of him for pushing through it and doing the work, life lesson there.
I'm shooting Lone Star STOL tomorrow and Saturday in Sulphur Springs if anyone is thinking about heading over. JII is coming over to shoot with me on Saturday. Friday is the pressure day for me so I will be able to enjoy him on Saturday..

Friday evening we were scheduled to do some air to air at STOL but a bunch of things got in the way. I was sitting in Legend's hangar downloading files and this scene began to develop. First I thought that it was unlikely that I could get the drone launched before it was over, but I ddi, and a little Legend Cub lifted off the grass runway and started playing in the sky. Probably my favorite shot of the weekend..............
That young'un, JIII, is growing like a weed (no surprise)
He will always treasure the times you two have together.
Chocolate Chip cookies, airplane and cameras - destiny !

Hope everyone's doing well! Here's another bunch of slide scans from another visit to the 147th at Ellington, this time F-16 ADFs shot on the airshow weekend in Oct 1993. I wonder if ray remembers any of the crew chief names here? The cc for 82-930 would be hard to forget!
Knew them all Kevin. Quirosirizarry was my Asst. Crew Chief when we had F-4s. Being Puerta Rican Quiros is his paternal formal name followed by his maternal formal name Irizarry.
Herman House was a character. He was a very short, maybe 5 feet tall in heels, older guy who lived in the sun. He had skin and face of leather and smelled like Hawaiian Tropic sun lotion all day. He owned at least two or three power boats. He found out I had a small sailboat and wanted me to teach him how to sail. After sailing Galveston bay from Morgan's Point to Texas City a couple of times he bought a Force Five sailboat like mine. I went out with him on his first solo and he did fine until he had to run with the wind to return to the beach at Morgan's Point. He had an accidental jibe and turned the sailboat over. I showed him how to right the boat, but at maybe 90 pounds with a wet swimsuit he couldn't do it. In the meantime a container ship was blowing a warning horn since he drifted into the Houston shipping channel lane. I had to swim out and right the boat to get out of the path of the ship. We then had to fight the wake from from the container vessel since we were so close. He got better and even competed in sailboat races in Kemah and did quite well.
J.D. Hill was the quiet dependable guy. Hardly ever complained and was always there, always did what he was suppose to when he was suppose to. He is the guy you wish you had on every crew.
Thanks for the memories, Kevin. You made a septuagenarian happy today!
Speaking of making memories, Chandler and I have been planning a "Gender Reveal" for his older brother and his wife and soon to be our second Great Grandson. Try Googleing "Gender Reveal" and you will walk away shaking your head from all the tragedies you just witnessed. We wanted to avoid all of those stupid human tricks, so we planned this one meticulously and, thank The Good Lord, that's how we executed it. The day could not have been more perfect.............
Jim, That is pretty cool and congratulations on yet another Great Grand!!!!
Sorry all, been pretty absent the last few months! Got caught in a worm hole back in about late June or early July and dang, it's taken a long time to dig out. Most of it has been good, though there are/have been a few bumps in the road as well.
Now, the last thing is I have this problem not saying "No" when asked to volunteer.......... I have been asked to video a segment of a Veterans program in just over a week and I have never done any video work......................... I support a group called Purple Heart Warriors Outdoors, it arranges guided hunts for Veterans, generally special forces active duty or retired. I have been asked to Video the "Tell Us Your Story" portion of the banquet.
Tools: 5D MKIV or 1D MKII and either good Primes or excellent Canon L-series glass. Seems that I should use MOV for rec quality with either FHD 24 or 30 FPS ALL-I. I won't be doing the editing (I hope) and I will set the camera in manual mode to fix the shutter-speed / Aperture. Let ISO float in Auto within reason.
What else do I need to know for a basic video? I only have to best a cell phone video/audio and I think that should okay with the tools I have. Should I consider a RODE hot shoe shotgun mic? I am hoping to be able set up about 15 ft from the podium.
Love to hear some tips and feel free to PM me if that would be best.
Thanks,
Dan
Great to hear from you! Glad everything is going good with you and yours. Sounds like you have the challenge covered. I would suggest the shotgun mic just because the in camera audio is ok, but pretty weak in situations like you are describing. 24.97 or 29.97 will be fine, the lower frame rate renders a less "video" feel with a more "cinematic" texture. Make sure that you have anti-flicker turned on just in case the lighting has an unfriendly frequency.
