A picture and a couple of questions:
First, a little dabble in architecture photography at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, MO captured with the Canon R5II using a 22 year old Canon EF17-40mm F4L.
And now the questions.
1: General Question - Is anyone going to the Wings over Wayne Airshow this weekend at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina? I will be there tomorrow off-base for the arrivals, and then on-base for the show on Saturday if anyone is going and would like to link up?
2: Specific Question to Dr. Wilson - Jim, would you mind sharing the details of the R5II settings you use for an airshow? I will be shooting with the 100-500mm. My thoughts are to use full area focus with vehicle capture, shutter priority (high speed for jets, low for props), setting 2 on the lens for IS, and electronic shutter. I always shoot in raw. But if you have thoughts on what might work better, I would greatly appreciate it.
With all due respect,
Chas
Your settings are dead on Bud! That’s exactly how I have mine programmed. Just control your shutter finger in the 30fps mode because you can run out of buffer if you are shooting RAW.

I must admit I am not really a big fan of warbirds, I am more a modern fighter jet kind of guy.
Every June, there is this WWII Weekend event in Reading Pa, about 2 hours from where I live. I have been there a few times.
They have all sorts of warbirds flying/displaying, offering rides. Folks also bring the tanks, armored vehicles, guns from different countries. Some of them dress in German and Japanese uniforms. The funny thing is some of them are too fat to look like German solders in WWII. I may stop by this year.....Show more →
I love the olde "warbirds" Douglas. Now when in "contact" ...."the need for speed"...(Top Gun-Goose) is there and it was never fast enough!
The Reading event sounds super! There was an olde WWII tank at the VFW Post in Thurmont sitting as a display BUT on each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, someone would "fire it up" and cruise the grounds.
Haven't been by there in many years so I don't know if they still do that or if it is even still there.
I don't believe I EVER saw a "fat" combat soldier. Lean and mean they be!!
Again..SUPER photography brother!

Pump replacement is in process, no flight today. Chandler and I are doing drone and cinema camera video just to be productive. The positive side, this gives us lots of time to brainstorm, and , of course, "tick-tock"...............
A cool new movie from Mel Gibson is Flight Risk. Watching this behind the scene video made me think of you. I'm guessing you'll be adding this LED "volume" to your hanger. It should reduce some of the air-to-air costs. Oh, and you'll probably want to pick up the DJI Ronin 4D 4-Axis Cinema Camera.
Thanks Bill much appreciated looking forward to the end result.
Bill if possible could you ask if that is the former Russels Raiders airframe? because various sources stated that the airframe was damaged beyond repair?

The past two days have been some of the most challenging that I have navigated in my career. Fortunately I had my trusty Grandson Chandler with me to fill in the gaps. He was amazing, really took a lot of initiative and captured some tremendous stills and video while I scrambled to get my stuff. Both days were 18 hour sorties, combined with the stress of not knowing what was happening next, or if anything was going to happen at all. In fact, we were told that we should pack up yesterday around noon because the crew was certain the maiden flight was not happening that day. We decided to hang and shoot details. A couple of hours later I got an urgent call from the marketing director on the west coast alerting me that it was, indeed, going to fly and the board of directors were on a jet to watch......................Fortunately, we were standing 10' from the plane and ever vigilant. FAA/DAR was enroute to inspect the aircraft and sign the flight authorization, pressure was mounting. The light, of course, while clearing, was getting worse for us every minute. Oh well, there comes a point where you do the best that you can do and deal with it. The test pilots arrived, seasoned guys with the gray hair one likes to see in the seats up front, nice guys. More drama, more delays, mounting tension across the board, and then....................the image heard around the world in the commercial aviation world. Press releases were all written , just waiting for this image. This was aviation history, never before has this kind of prototype been created and it means that the 71 Boeing 777 ER's that are in line for conversion, can proceed. Billions of dollars were at stake and largely hinged upon this aircraft completing a successful test flight.
