Thanks Fred that's great. I would never have found that setting. It is worth noting that a web page can record everything you do with it and can send data back to the server. How on earth does disabling javascript prompts improve security? It's total nonsense. I mean, honestly, what is the point of that? This is not security, it is security PR, or more accurately FUD and disinformation in an effort to hide its own grotesque security failings behind a smokescreen, and blame it all on others. The javascript sandbox was pretty well designed by netscape. Shame that MS

That prompt is very annoying. I guess it's a way to push the blame on the user if anything bad happens...I would also suggest sticking with Firefox, Safari or Netscape.
BTW: Email notifications seem to be working great for me!

Just wanted to throw in a quick thank you and congrats on a job well done with the new look. I know keeping a site with this much traffic up and running can be a real pain in the neck (or a few feet lower...), but I've been visiting for a few years now and the times I've encountered issues have been very few and far between.

It's still "not" working for me with IE 7.0.
Once I click on the "..." link, the browser reloads and takes me back to the first page.

Perhaps it was working before and something changed?

I'm using IE 6 (and refuse to upgrade). Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

According to MS about locking window.prompt(), The window.prompt script method is blocked and the gold Information bar is displayed by default in Internet Zone for Internet Explorer 7. The helps prevent websites from spoofing things such as the logon screens of other websites. This is a new security enhancement for Internet Explorer 7. (here)

You will note that among the various changes, this is the only one that gets a "This is a new security enhancement for Internet Explorer 7"... They probably sensed it will annoy a lot of people

Brainiac: is there a "post-preview" planned in your work (along with a display of the previous posts under the reply/input box)? This is not a bug, but would be helpful

Hello Fred,
I posted an entry in the WA and I noticed that for some reason it is "topic locked" Can you explain this to me? Not sure what I might have done to cause this. I was notified by a PM that no one can post a comment to my entry.
Thanks

I just tried to click on/in the dots/line between page 3, and the last page, to enter a specific page number- in the canon forum, It took me back to page #1, before I even had the chance to acknowledge the gold"scripts" box that opens @ the top of the page..

Hey here is a request, I know on some of the forums I use if you hold the cursor over the title it will show you the content for a couple seconds to do a quick read to see if you want to open. Helps when the title does not explain enough.

Just a wish list thing.

Thanks for a wonderful site!

1) how many web sites use javascript prompt for login? (hint: none)
2) why not just show in the prompt window the originating domain of the prompt? (javascript already disallows communication with pages from other domains)

This is not a security enhancement. The more you bombard the user with security warnings when they are not needed, the more likely she is to just click 'allow' without thinking.

This is a way down my list because you can just post the comment and edit it if it isn't right.

I ran a Search today which returned 15 pages of results which was displayed at 1 2 3 ... 14 15 end. I can only access pages 1, 2, 3, 14 and 15 of those resutls as clicking ... did nothing. Perhaps if there were previous/next controls, like we have when navigating pages of a thread, I would be able to get to pages 4 through 13?

I have a bug/request, which has to do with the parsing of URLs.

I wanted to add http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22556281-661,00.html to a reply but, as you can clearly see, the parser chokes on the commas in the URL. The clickable link stops after the /0.

It would be nice if we could use the quite custom board code of [ url=http://link]name of link[/ url].

(And now I hit 'send reply' and find out how this is being parsed. Looks like I have to add spaced inside the tags.)

Easy to do, but I won't until the speed problems are fully solved. It will dramatically slow down the viewboard query.

Actually, rather than posting such a long URL (some of which may wrap to multiple lines and still have problems)...just use TinyURL.

http://www.tinyurl.com

Then you'll get a short URL that can be used with any web site or e-mail.

Your URL could be this: http://tinyurl.com/2u6nqa
Or use it in a link

Request for making a "Just looking" button default in new polls.

Again and again new polls appear with a list of options but with no button to click to just look at results. So, people click on an arbitrary option anyway, thus making the results of the poll totally useless.

The poll script should be changed so a "Just looking" button appear there as a separate button or a default list item.

Quick question: With the 'Print Post' feature, I notice that images embedded via image upload aren't included (it looks like only externally-linked images are). Is there any way to change this so that all images in the thread are included?

I know this would be mighty low priority on the list, but if there's an easy fix, that'd be 'neat-o'...

Looks like the forum is parsing URLs with a comma in them fine now. Nice work

I have introduced delete buttons by each pm in the inbox pour enourager...

Wouldn't it make sense to have the system automatically delete messages older than a certain date? Would it be appreciated if it emailed each message to the recipient and/or sender before deletion?

Yes - this has annoyed me for a long time. I am going to fix this once I have rationalised the serving of uploaded images. Right now it's still a mess. The original code authors do not seem to have understood the concept of 'bandwidth'. I really want to get the server to serve smaller images which can be enlarged within the page, by a click. We often load quite large images when we don't really want to see them. Fred feels that paying members will not like this as they have paid to show their pictures big. IMO it will be no loss: if someone likes your 300 pixel wide image, she can click it to see it in its full 1000 pixel glory. Any views?

Actually some forums include the text of the e-mail/PM messages with the e-mail alert, along with a link to the original as posted in the forum. I find that to be most convenient.

personally I find overly large images to be rather annoying - specially if it introduces scroll bars to the web page because of "overflow".

I much rather prefer a way to automatically add a short text at the bottom of each image that have been automatically reduced which states something along the lines of "click on image for full size view".
