Every frame I still have to find a camera can give me something like that yet . If you find one, please let me know.

Jeff, I know how you feel. I sent a blue dot 1D3 to Canon for "calibration" with three lenses. After 3 1/2 weeks I got it back and it's exactly the same. Either Canon didn't do anything, or all L lenses are supposed to not focus correctly on a fixed 1D3?
Anyway after a day of shots inside the house, it's been pouring rain the past few days, I get images like yours (again I've seen this lots before also). Just nailing shots perfectly than a rash of completely OOF ones. Not like it got confused on the wrong thing, but just nothing really in focus. That same day got a call from the local pro dealer that they have a D3 in.
Been trying that for the past day. Too early to really judge yet, since I only a few shots outside (with a new 24-70 f2.8 it apparently is weather sealed ). But so far none of schizophrenic behavior of the 1D3. If I do switch, I'm really going to be sobbing over the loss of the 35L. But I just can't believe that the 1D3 still seems to have focus issues and that Canon wasted 3 1/2 weeks of my time for nothing.
But I do like the D3 viewfinder. Nothing like full frame to give you a real viewfinder. And you can actually tell if a shot was in focus with the new LCD!

The Mark III was my first real pro body and you can imagine the disappointment I've had with it. I had hoped the mirror fix would do the trick - it goes in after the holidays - but with RG's report and y'alls comments - I feel like I'm going to be stuck with a lemon with no recourse. These things are too expensive for me to go out and buy the next model and just hope its better.
I could wish for a total recall and credit toward another body - but since that ain't happenin' I'm not holding my breath. I hate lemonade!

Okay Jeff.. here is a new one.. My MkIII is within the serial range of "affected" cameras, but blue dot on box (not in battery compartment) focuses fine, especially night sports or low light sports.. for some reason, at my last wedding, I had my 35L attached, everything was fine, then I attached the 580EX and it would not AF with it.... the weirdest thing! then I attached my sigma 12-24, and bam it focuses again.. so I attach my 200 2.8 to check that and it focuses again.. then I put my 35L back on and it wouldn't focus.. I took off the 580 and the fargin thing started AF'ing again.. WTF?
This has to be the most finicky camera I have ever owned... weird..
But my results have been great with this camera, but I think I will send it in after they get most of the mirror repairs out of the way.

Keep on your mind that working from close to wide open aperture you will see some clarity differences. And btw which is your point of focus?
If f/2.8 lenses routinely looked like that, I wouldn't own a single one. I have many shots at f/2.8 both before and after this one which looked fine, similar to the f/8 shot. Same point of focus as the f/8 shot, which is the center of the image in the thumb view.

Bummer, that's very strange, but sounds like it could be worse. I used it last night and this morning with the 24-70/2.8L and 550EX, and it seems to be working fine, luckily.

I've noticed intermittent AF issues with my 580EX AND the macro twin lite and certain lenses - including my 24-70 ƒ2.8L and my 100 ƒ2.8 macro. Sometimes it works fine - others it just doesn't work at all.
I'm thinking this camera is a lemon through and through - lots of unrealized potential - but virtually useless for its intended primary purpose!
Glad I'm reading this thread - I'm gaining a list to fill out on my survey when I send it in next week.

When you say wouldn't AF, do you mean it was just off, or wouldn't lock?
I shot some Christmas snapshots with my 35L and 580 Monday night and noticed on the LCD everything seemed extra soft. I have not reviewed them on my editing workstation yet... But I am wondering if I am having the same thing. I need to go double check now.
That is very odd and your post got me to thinking now. I have been a proponent of a working MkIII. However, I shoot with a specific set of lenses on it for the most part. My wider lenses and 35L are usually on my 5D instead when I am doing flash photography.
Interesting indeed. I contacted Canon recently about getting the submirror fix and am still waiting on it to be scheduled.

Update:
Well.. After checking...all I can say is.. I sure wish Canon would put better LCDs in these $4500 cameras. Dang MK3 screen is so soft...I wish it was at least as clear as my 5D.
Oh well.. Needless to say...When reviewing my 35L with flash shots on my editing workstation, they were fine...
Overall, I guess I'd prefer a fuzzy LCD on the camera and sharp pics, than vice versa.
I realize some of this is due to zooming in tight on a fairly WA shot to check sharpness, but the same shots on my 5D look great on it's LCD.
Regardless, I just wanted to post back my findings.

Jeff, my first MIII (affected serial number, but originally working great for months) also suddenly developed a bizarre focus issue with the 70-200 in Ai Servo. In my case, it appeared that although I was using center focus, the camera was consistently selecting the focus point above center. So something in the top (or left for vertical shots) would be in focus, but not my desired subject in the center of the frame. This was regardless of contrast, size, etc. of the subject. I don't believe that the IS was on, as I was shooting sports at high shutter speed, and normally leave IS off in that situation. Never had the problem in One Shot mode, where the lens continued to work perfectly.
Next the phenomenon began to happen with other lenses, both with and without IS, though not as dramatically. The 70-200 was clearly struggling more than the others.
Then I upgraded to firmware 1.1.3, and the camera completely went completely berserk - frame after frame of out of focus pictures when shooting in AI Servo. It is currently at Canon for repair.
I have deleted most of the affected pictures, but will go back and see if any of the bad shots are still on an external drive. I'm curious now to see if the plane of focus is similar to what you experienced.
I'm also wondering if you noticed any relationship between the 1.1.3 firmware upgrade and your focus problems. My second MIII (blue dot out of the affected range) came with 1.1.0. I upgraded the firmware reluctantly.

I have the exact problem after upgrading 1.1.3 into my non fix M3 which is now in Canon and My blue dotted that came with FW 1.1.0 now upgraded to 1.1.3 works very well so I think the FW will not work on non fix body IMHO.

I did not notice any difference in my camera body pre and post fix. I have been happy with the camera since day one. Back in early June 505XXX. One shot has always been spot on. Servo has always seemed fine to me for what I shoot. Servo never seems as crisp as one shot on a stationary target but none the less it is still sharp. My biggest problem is I never feel 100% confident with my MK III even though I have had no issues. It is somthing always in the back of my head and it really takes the enjoyment out of shooting. I find myself always wanting to test the camera and not just shoot.
