oh jeez. Jeff, sorry about your problem. i hope you do give them an ear-full. not that it'll do much (from my experience).
i'm back to using my 5d. i haven't changed my technique or my lenses (mostly 35L, 85L), and the shots i took yesterday are GORGEOUS. sure, i had some out of focus shots, but everything was easily explained. i.e. my 5d is repeatable, predictable and dependable. qualities that the schizo 1d3 may never (for some people) possess by the sounds of it. now that 5d is a great camera!

Incidentally, there certainly seems to be significant anecdotal evidence to suggest that some MkIII's are being repaired to a more functional state, so perhaps my camera only getting one part replaced (and not two) is the issue. Hopefully the next trip to VA will do the trick, at least for this errant AF issue...

It's apparent that Dr. Pepper is more focused than Coca Cola, or at least more consistent.
Oddly, besides having a focus inconsistency, the Coke can has an odd look to it. Can't quite explain it, but the color is kind-of "splotchy" as if the image was noisy, and also downsized.

The Coca Cola can sequence has that slight "shadow" where the white lettering meets the red can...just as RG's did in some of his shots, and just as my mark2s do in bright sunshine with a white jersey and a dark background.
The DP can does not have this, but it doesn't have as much contrast.
I really want Canon to fix these AF and shadow issues so I can buy a new camera or 2. I've had the money in my piggy bank for awhile, but I'm not breaking into it until they've got this stuff fixed.

Well, here is a 6 shot series with my 70-200f2.8IS on tripod, Al Servo, Center AF point, 10 fps, ISO 800, 6 ft distance, 200 mm, f2.8, 1/80 sec. The EXIF of all files retained.
I don't see any problem with Al Servo on static objects @ 10 fps with my 1DMk3. As all EXIF are available, you are more than welcome to check each image. The cloest focus distance of the 70-200f2.8IS lens is 4.6 ft.

In a real world shooting with my 1DMk3, the result can be amazing. I do have thousands of good image to show how capable the 1DMk3 is just from my recent trip to Bosque.

Jeff,
When all is said and done, are you feeling that the only way Canon can deal with these issues is to shorten their product cycle and introduce a new series 1 body (Series 1 Mark IIIN)?
In short, no. Canon would alienate many, many photographers (both amateurs and pros alike) by choosing such an approach. If that's what happens, I will jump ship.

My experiences with the 1D3 are mirrored in your images Jeff. When the camera works it is absolutely fabulous, and if Canon are able to make it work like that for every frame I will not hesitate in re-purchasing. I admire your diligence after all this time...mine ran out after four months of ownership.
