2e 90/2.8 last model - awesome bargain at $500. Small, sharp, easy to focus and high contrast. As the joke goes- "...only beaten by the 902/ Apo -- at F2...". Hard to find 2nd hand.
Conner, which ones are the last models?
I have a Leica 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit-R. The number says 3323924. Is this a late model, or not?

I love the ergos and VF of my R8. Having briefly used a DMR - it's nice, It's not the greatest high-iso shooter, but it takes great pics, the screen is sharp (a bit slow to draw - more like a 1ds Mk1), the histogram overlay is nice and swapping from digi back to film or back takes 2 minutes.
I'm hoping some will hit the market when the R10 arrives.
RobertP - mine is serial # 3345145. The last batch, my understanding, had a model or product number of 11154 made from 86-96. Looks like the latest version's serial numbers start in the 34xxxxx range.

Well I said that in the beginning but it got ignored , i would jump all over the Leica glass for the 1dsMKIII because you have a option if the canon does not work or you like the R10 better when it releases. What does Zeiss have, absolutely nothing to go to but another Canon. And if that don't fit you than you basically have thousands wrapped up in a dead lens system. Now don't get me wrong i have used Zeiss and i love there glass. Now let me tell you the secret of Leica which got mislead after my first post . Leica absolutely makes the best glass for wide open work. It is design to work at wide open or slightly stopped down. Go shoot a 90 cron at F2 in M or R and tell me it is not resolving at full aperture. The optimum on either one is F4 and no CA. Actually leica glass has very little CA than many of them . Also leica glass will let you push the limits in MPX. i don't even want to tell you how much hard ache this body will cause with Canon glass, yes there are a couple that may handle it but NOT a system down the line. Not only that i prefer the color and contrast much better in Leica than Zeiss which has more contrast and color is not as nice IMHO. I've been down this road for a long time doing this alternative stuff and logically it makes more sense opverall. The R10 is going to rip the industry and that is ALL i can say. Just ask Doug Herr above me in this post what he thinks of his 280mm f4. Trust me he is probably sleeping with it, it is that good. The 180 f2 is killer and i owned 3 200 1.8 canons. canon makes nice gear don't get me wrong but it falls short in many area's and glass is one of them . If your a fanatic than your gonna be in trouble when this camera hits the streets because if you have glass that won't take advantage of the MPX that it will put out than why upgrade to it....Show more →
How much do you think the R10 will cost us and will it be in the medium format digital back range?
p.3 #5 · Preparing for 1Ds III - Sharp Lenses + Adapters
Guy,
If the price of the R10 is in the range of the 1Ds Mark III, then I will also add this new upcoming camera to my existing Sinar 54H multi-shot digital back. Even, if the upcoming Leica R10 will only have 16 MP I will consider it. I do wish they will give us 22 MP with CCD technology and true 16 bits. This is one of the reason why I never gave up my Leica Apo-Summicron-R 2.0/180 ROM. As long as I have this lens I will have the entry lens that is worthy to get back to the Leica R system. I wish I still have the Noctilux which is my other entry lens to the up coming M9. Thanks for the information, I am very looking forward to see this happen. I also have the Mamiya Apo-Tele 2.8/300 converted to Contax 645 mount with customed adapter to put on the R10. I am also looking for the Mamiya 645M Apo-Tele 4.5/500 if any one see it let me know.

Guy,
I agree with your value accessment for folks who are intersted in the Leica route. There will be folks that use the Canon systems since it fit their needs more. The only thing that I see is that if the R10 is an auto focus system then the current R lens will also drop in value in the future with only a few lens worth to keep even in manual focus mode such as the 2.0/180. For anything longer than 200 mm range, Canon's auto focus L tele-photo lens are extremely good and at a very attractive prices to go along with their robus weather seal 1 series DSLR cameras. I see the R10 to fit more folks like myself for sure. Since my top priority is image quality, I prefer the medium format system that offer extremely great value such as the Contax 645 systems and its modern fashion and life style Carl Zeiss lens at an extremely attractive prices. I also add the Mamiya tops Apo-tele photo lens to the line up which can be used for both the Contax 645 and the Leica R10 or any other 35 mm DSLR systems. This way I can use the same lens wether in medium format or 35 mm. But again, my style is not fitting for everyone and in fact not for a lot of folks. Thus, I will always try to take this thought into consideration.
Can you imagine what the new auto focus Apo-Summicron-R 2.0/180 will worth? I would imagine in the +/- $10,000.00 range. Also how much the new Auto Focus wide angle lens will cost?
p.3 #7 · Preparing for 1Ds III - Sharp Lenses + Adapters
If folks who are pure Canon DSLR shooters, the addition of alternative lens, especially in the super wide and wide angle lens, could enhance and complete their systems. They can choose from various third party lens such as the Contax Carl Zeiss Distagon T* lens are great options for extremely high quality and great values. Some folks they also like the Zuiko lens for its compactness and extremely high value. The current manual focus Leica R lens are also great option but on a little more pricey side and we are uncertain to what will happen to their values once the AF lens arrived; you figure the AF lens will come if the R10 is supposed to be an AF camera body. One thing about the Canon DSLR camera body it will take almost any lens and in some cases where it will not, you can make it works.

These samples, which include some RAW with Canons best glass don't look that encouraging.
...don't forget to uprez the shots you are mentally comparing from your current gear to 21 Mpixel before comparing 100% on screen with the linked shots. Otherwise you aren't taking the bigger image into account, and the 21 Mpixel file will disappoint because the pixels don't look any different to pixels from a 10 megapixel file. I think some of the linked shots look pretty tasty in terms of detail:

21mp is not going to break any resolution records and anyone thinking that any DSLR is going to be an ideal tool for producing large high res images is going to be disapointed. The game has moved on - back a few years ago when it was the 16mp 1DS2 and the 22mp MFD backs that were all that was available the resolution between these 2 was very close - I did side by side tests and it was a close call. Now that we have 33 and 39mp DMF backs the resolution stakes have moved on and these backs have opened up a big gap between DSLR and MFD. So a lot of squabbling, bickering and posturing as to which DSLR system is going to be the next revolution in resolution as far as DSLR's are concerned is very blinkered. Judge these cameras on many things but don't get hung up on resolution please - these are not the right tools for that game.
