Yes, my wife already knows that she will have to bury me with my R 180/2, it is a work of art.

Hello Jack,
Thank you for your feedback. It never occurred to me that you could convert a Contax-Zeiss autofocus lens to the EOS system. I currently own a very good copy of the CY 35-70/3.4 lens which I consider a gem. At f8 it comes very close to the primes in the 35 to 50 range. The only problem I have is that the viewfinder gets dark with my Canon ee-s focusing screen. An autofocus version of this lens would solve this problem. Is there a similar quality autofocus N short range zoom that you are familiar with? Perhaps one that you know may perform at the same level or better than the great Canon Ls but with a little sharper in the corners…
Again many thanks for your feedback.

Hi Son,
Thank you for your lens recomendations. From your list I am particularly interested in the Distagon T* 2.8/35 PC, the 55 1.2 and the 85 1.2. The last two seem to be quite rare and I did not find them for sale anywhere. I noticed someone has the 35/2.8 PC for sale here at FM. I wonder if it will do better than the Zeiss 35/2.0 ZF lens that I recently got. In theory, the 35 PC lens with its larger image circle should help the corners quite a bit.

Raul, here is the link to the Conurus page with info on all available Contax N lenses that can be converted for EOS autofocus. I sure wish the Contax 37-70 could be autofocus, it is such a great lens. But it can't be converted to AF.
Also, if you are interested in the Contax 35 PC send me a pm, I have a great copy available. It is sharp corner to corner (I've only used it stopped down so I can't swear that it will be as spectacular wide open). I have some other Contax lenses but I don't think I'm ready to part with the others.

Hi Son, again thank you very much for your very detailed answers to my questions.
Do not forget that the solution of the adpater thickness for the Canon adapter is solved but the Nikkor mount adapter is not determined yet. Therefore, it has been assumed that the Nikon mount adapter thickness is not a problem but we do not know until we can test the adapter in those lens.
I bought an expensive but very nice NovoFlex adapter to mount the Zeiss ZF lenses to my Canon 5D. The adapter seems less thick than the Contax-to-eos cameraquest/fotodiox adapters but unfortunately I experienced infinity focus issues with the Zeiss 100/2.0 ZF. I am ordering an adapter from fotodiox to see if it is an improvement with the 100/2.0. I will share my findings.
About making another run of the "Son Adapter" - I mentioned in an email to you that I would buy 2...

A good copy (much better than the one tested on 16-9) of the Zuiko 18/3.5 could be considered, as well as the Zuiko 24 shift, the Nikon 28/4 shift, late Leica 35mm Elmariit, late Zeiss 35/1.4 (mines a Rollei mount), and possibly even the Nikon 28/2 AIS. I just picked up the 28/2 and the initial results are very impressive. At 14MP and no AA filter, my SLR/c gives a good indication of what to expect at 22MP with an AA filter, and these lenses outresolve my sensor.

I know we say this every time a new FF camera arrives, but the modest hike from 16MP to 22MP is once again going to sharpen further the distinction between the good and the great. Many fingers are being crossed that the apparently bottomless corner-resolving abilities of the Leica 15mm f2.8, Zeiss 16mm Fisheye, Zeiss 21mm f2.8, Mamiya 24mm Fisheye, Leica 28mm Elmarit, Zeiss 28mm f2.8, Zeiss ZF 35mm f2, Zeiss 35mm PC and Pentax FA 35mm will not bottom out on us yet.
These, though, are the ONLY sub-35mm lenses in my experience that are truly comfortable across the sensor at working apertures on a 1Ds II, and new questions will be asked of them in the next few months. To that list we could probably add fairly uncontroversially most fast 35mm primes, and – I very much hope – the new Nikon 14-24mm.

Hi Fotoz,
Raul, for around the same as the price of a 1Ds3, you could probably get yourself a refurbished Sinar e22 for your 6008. Did you consider this option?
true, I have looked into this option and it is a good option but for me it is hard to not get exactly what i see in the Rollei's waist level finder. I've come to the decission that I will move my rollei medium format to digital when a square full frame sensor becomes available. For now I will continue to use it with film and I am hoping to get acceptable digital results from the canon 1ds3.

Sample variation can be a problem with Olympus lenses: I don't know anyone who's tried a few who would disagree. If I can pick up another 18mm, I will re-test it. The Nikon 28mm primes are also very good: I'd be happy to add those to the list! Unfortunately, the 24mm PC doesn't outresolve the 5D even, and the Leica 35mm f2.8 ROM I tested did that squishy extreme corner thing that certain Leica designs seem to have a weakness for. I wouldn't put in the same category as the Zeiss glass. Keep hearing good things about the Nikon 28PC, despite Sean Reid preferring the frequently-panned Schneider version . . .

You get a mask with the back which crops the viewfinder to the sensor area. Easy.

Ho Conner99,
Thank you very much for sharing your experience with the 5D and alternative lenses. What Leica to EOS adapter did you use when testing the 5D with Leica's lenses? Just like Son suggested, I found in my own test that different adapters give me different results. Especially important at infinity where most of my manual focus lenses are not performing like the MTFs would suggest (e.g. I don't achive critical sharpness accorss the field until F8 or F11 instead of F5.6 - even with the Contax 21/2.8)
The Leica 28/2.8 you mentioned is this for sale in this forum - please email me pricing if it is still available.

Raul,
Right I now use happypagehk's R adapters. For me, they work fine - no issues with sharpness wide open, but not being a landscape shooter (the reason I'm selling the 28), I do very, very little work at infinity.
I'll email re: the lens price, but it's US$1100 + paypal shipped insured.
As an aside, I recently sold the 5D after jumping through 18 hoops trying to get it to manual focus accurately with alternate lenses.
At narrow apertures it was always just a bit off. When I discovered I needed to get the thing calibrated to work with Canon's own percision matte screen I'd had enough. Recently had an arquement with a Canon rep about the subject of the sloppy tolerances with the 5D and just got a bunch of mumbo-jumbo back about 'calibration' and the evil of using non -EF lenses.
Now I shoot with an R8+motor drive (what a sweet combo and that VF is to die for) and took a risk and acquired a 30D to test lenses and to act as an additional 1.6x digi adapter to go along withg my 180/2 apo and 1.4x apo.
To my surprise the 30D works perfectly with an enhanced Katzeye. I can focus my 30D+adapter+180/2 handled at F2 with 5x the hit rate of my 5D+(same) adapter+90/2.8.

That is a very surprising result. I would quite doubt this is inherent in the lenses, so I agree with the suggestions that the adapters should be investigated.
It would be interesting top see some of the images from your test.
Since I now have both the Contax c/y and the ZF 50mm f1.4 Planars, I should try a test to see if additional support for your conclusion can be had.

All I can say is that I can't wait till Mark/Hubsand gets his 1Ds 111 and shows us what it can really do with some good alternative glass. These samples, which include some RAW with Canons best glass don't look that encouraging.

I'm not sure if this is considered inappropriate, but I do have CZ 15, 21, 35PC and 85/1.2 60 Jahre for sale here. All come with Son MInh Pham custom matched adapters. I have need to free up cash for other needs and will sacrifice these lenses.

Some of the photos have been developed from RAW, processed through DPP and then saved out as a jpeg. Its in Japanese but you can make out the words RAW and DPP for those images. There is also a comparison between RAW and Jpeg of some leaves.
