Calumet in the UK are having a series of Canon open days show casing the Mark 3. It would be interesting to see what the reps have to say.
I have been to 2 of these, one organised by warehouse express, the other by london camera exchange. Both sadly featured Canon Sales Account Managers pointing us all to the wonderful information on CPN for how the 1D3 focussing works. They were prepared to take technical questions offline but once we got past the standard docs I was told to talk to CPS helpdesk. Never ask sales people technical questions, they don't care and they can't help! Both open days and seminars on 1D3 focussing were an utter waste of time, well to someone who knows where all the 1D3 CFn material is on CPN anyway!!!!
Alistair, it may be hard to sell on Ebay and you'd probably feel guilty selling a crappy camera too for $4K. If I decide to sell it will be hard to sell a good copy as well without allowing the buyer to try it for him or herself.

I feel exactly the same. When the 1D3 was announced in Januari I decided I would buy one. I also decided not to buy the first batch (May/June), but it's October now and there still is no solution.
Now I'm thinking to skip the 1D3 all together and see how the successor of the 5D will look like.
You can have mine, altthough it's a crappy one
Another sad story. Mine was calibrated but with no results.
Main problems with 400DO and 500.
According to CPS they have the new 1.1.1 firmware and I can get it this week by dropping by.
I am really sorry to hear your woes and others. I wish this camera would have lived up to its potential. I am glad I cancelled my 1D Mark III order and purchased one of the last new 1dmk2n. Maybe the 1dmk3 successor will be less of a gamble. Big sigh. Good luck reouping your moneis.
Every time I speak to CPS they tell me that the custom functions need tuning and that the 1D Mark 3 is fine although they acknowledge that photographers are having problems adjusting to it.
I listen to that, pick up a Mark 3, shoot a rugby game and the results are frankly cr4p. The following weekend I pick up my 1D2N, fit the same lens and the results are fantastic! I keep trying to remember this as every time I speak to CPS they make me feel like a cr4ppy photographer when all I want to do is complain about their product!

Let us know the results - I haven't read a report on the official 1.1.1 release, everything's about the beta.

Thanks for the moral support Chris!

Oh man does it burn me to hear that them say the camera is fine but you have not learned how to use it yet...bunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a gutless way to respond. Sorry, but this just really gets me going...$4,500 and who knows how many missed shots. Ugh.
Shot football yesterday, soccer today, now going to go plant a tree...Red Maple...and leave the camera in the house for a while.
Kick it upstairs as far as you need too to get a refund. Find as good a used 1dm2 as you can. There's really got to be a defect somewhere along the line and we can't blame ourselves after doing a reasonable shuffling of the settings. I was going to be a buyer too but no rush with the frequency of issues with it. Good luck boys... Steve
When a camera is designed such that you need a pilots license to be able to get the thing to do what any other camera can do out of the box, then I say Canon have stuffed up big time and have been too clever by half.
It's like a car that's been set up so that it can give the fastest lap time, but that only possibly Michael Schumacher could ever master and the other 99.999999999% of mortals will crash it every time, because it's too twitchy. Hey but when it works it's unbeatable.
Sorry Canon, you've made a serious error and it's time to stop passing the buck.
I can hear the words of Mac Davis' classic song, even as I type
"Oh Lord it's hard to be humble,
when your camera is perfect in every way
I can't wait to look in the view finder
cause I get better pictures each day.
To own one is to love one
It's just a hell of a camera.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but we've built the best camera we can."
Firstly, I have always hated Micheal Schumacher!! Secondly love your lyrics for Mac Davis's song!!
I'm sorry for all of that own this camera. I have been wanting one since it was even a whisper of a rumor!! But all the problems have stopped me in my tracks! I will not spend money that might at BEST be 50-50. Canon needs to admit the problem first, then fix the dammed thing. Once that happens all of us fence post sitter will lay our cash down!
