If it's a different mount, then how do EF lenses work normally on EFS cameras? Surely the mount is the same, but some of the EFS lenses take advantage of the smaller mirrors of EFS cameras and so protrude further into the camera. The advantage of partial use of a zoom range or partial use of the D3's sensor seem pretty marginal to me. Surely it's better to just carry glass that illuminates the whole sensor. If your camera can do FF, you're quickly going to lose interest in cropping to 5 megapixels.

Canon is the only one that has a special mount for their APS-C format. Nikon, Sigma, Tamron have the same mounts for their APS-C lenses as FF lenses
I could not find an emoticon for "...banging my head against the wall..."

The camera mount is the same. And as you correctly state, EF-S lenses protrude further into the mirror box (not all of them do). Therefore it's the lenses that have been modified. It's almost the same as introducing yet another mount that is incompatible.
I agree that using cropped lens on a FF is marginal at best unless you are in a bind and need to use one, or for creative reasons. The D3 also includes crop mode, which uses the center portion (DX sized) of the FF sensor, which allows you to use a DX lens to its full advantage. But again, I'm not sure I would use it that way.

Typed that one too fast. Mount obviously is the wrong word. I should have said Canon are the only ones that differentiate their crop lenses, you can't mount them on anything but 350D/400D/20D/30D/40D.
It might as well be a different mount if you can't fit them to any other EF mount cameras though.
