Tim, I think a lot of people are in your situation - I was. My decision to be an early adopter ot the 1DMkIII was simply based being sick and tired of the 20D AF for trying situations and not wanting to lose my prime shooting season as I am getting to an age where I can appreciate that there are a finite number of them left.
Had I not bought the M3 I would be planning on switching right now. The only reservations that I would have would be the loss of the 24-105 and the 70-200 F4 IS. Both are the best travel lenses around and they may have swayed the final decision but Nikon did a great job with the D300 and it will find its way into the hands of a lot of serious shooters....Show more →
Well put folks. The D300 (and even before that the D200) is the 3D we've been waiting for. I'm seriously thinking about switching. Canon just isn't making the DSLR that I need/want. I was planning on purchasing a 1Ds3 but now I may change my mind. If I switch, I'll miss the 70-200 f/4 IS and Canon's TS-Es tho. I guess I'd gain a 200-400 f/4 IS in the bargain (why in the world doesn't Canon have a 200-400 f/4 IS?). We'll see. Fun (and frustrating) times indeed.
THAT is great satire! I love this paragraph:
"When asked for clarification about third-party lens options, Kariya pointed out that companies like Sigma and Tokina fill niches that Nikon doesn’t have the time to bother with. “A few of our more demanding customers have been asking for a fast AF-S prime in the 30-35mm focal range. But this doesn’t fit into our long-term plans. There are still three or four more consumer zooms in the 18-70mm focal range that we need to get to market before we can worry about a prime lens that only a few professionals and enthusiasts will ever use. Since Sigma offers such a lens now, we’ve decided to go ahead and offer it as a customization option for D3 customers. Maybe that will shut them up. This is off the record, right?”

I'm not saying that this new 3" screen is crap. Not at all. It has 4 times the amount of (real) pixels compared to what has gone before it. But 922k "pixels" is deceiving.
Will you agree that Canon's USA website (see under specification for any Camera) is also equally deceiving ?
For the record, Nikon has clearly mentioned 922,000 Dots.
Thanks to Nikon, Canon shooters now have a chance to see 45-point focus system and better LCD screen in the coming 5DII and 50D (or 40DII). Hopefully the arrogant Canon would also consider 200/2.0 IS and 200-400/4 IS.
Prior to the the 1D3 release I had predicted the specs to be like the Nikon D3... FF w/ 12 MP but Canon decided to go with the 1.3x sensor and 10 MP. It will be interesting to see what effect this will have... most likely not very much as most pro shooters are established on either side with a pile of lenses and other gear which makes switching tricky. Had the 1D3 had these specs I think I may have purchased it instead of the 5D which I now shoot with.
Firstly I'm a Canon user. I just had to state that first. Someone a few pages ago said that they would take a Canon Cmos over a Sony any day...so would I. However, the D3 has Nikon's OWN Cmos sensor, it's not a Sony. The pendulum has moved to Nikon, finally, to Nikon. But it took to many years to catch up. We have had the benefit of better sensors and better low noise, high ISO, performance for a few years. I think that this will be great for Nikon users, and for Canon users. Prices will drop, and Canon will come back with something else to regain the top spot and so it goes....

I too am a Canon user. Had the 350D since it came out more than 2 years ago, and before that had the Rebel version of the film SLR. Nice cameras. The body of the 350D is a piece of plastic crap, but oh well. Little I did know back then when I started out with dSRLs.
I will be upgrading to a newer Canon, and this release from Nikon certainly will put pressure on Canon not to slack away (Sony's PS3 kind of attitude), and certainly the release of Nikon D300 will halt my purchase of Canon's 40D since I know that for about the same money you get MUCH, MUCH more from Nikon.
I will wait and see how Canon responds, but certainly, 40D is now off the plate as I do not think it is a worthwhile purchase considering the competition, etc.
I was glad to see 40D have a nice large LCD + weather seal, but now after reading what the Nikon D300 has, this is MORE exciting for sure. It would have been nice the 40D had the same specs, but nope... Canon will not monopolize its own other brands if it released the 40D with the kind of specs Nikon did for their D300.
I applaud Nikon for the energy and the "give it all they can" (and I am sure they could have done more - but that is economics and internal politics) vs. Canon who is watching with a monopoly kind of attitude (they have a large share of Canon users and they are now releasing cheapa$$ upgrades from camera to camera).
I applaud Nikon for sticking it up to Canon! Canon deserves to lose a lot of customers to Nikon due to its arrogancy!
It's almost as if Canon says: "Come with us you'll be happy when you've bought two of our cameras". With Nikon it's more like: "We'll give you what you need in one camera".

Nikon explicitly did not state where they source the sensor. It's their own DESIGN, but it's doubtful they make it in-house (as Canon does). It could well be a Sony sensor, with Sony and Nikon under contract not to disclose that fact until year XXXX after which Sony can sell it under their name. Or it may be made by Kodak, Dalsa, etc.
I used to be a Canon user until about two years ago and then switched to Nikon because it just suited me better.
I have to say a few things here. First it is a surprise to me, and quite refreshing that the great majority of you Canon guys (and gals) are very generous and suportive of this Nikon effort. Almost as if the old rivalry took a bit of a break (am I in the twilight zone? ) and in my judgement considerably better in tone to what I've seen of my buddies in black say of Canon's latest stuff. So ... thanks.
Secondly, I think that lately the products have been so good that with this effort by Nikon, it almost does not matte what one shoots. Ergonomics and plain and simple prefferences are about it now. I think that the D3 and D300 bring parity.
Sure many will quibble ... but these are now going to be pretty fine points that we will be arguing about in the future between the brands. Thats kind of nice too.
I'm sure there will be some teething problems, as there always are (that's why I will wait a year or so before any purchase) but I'm equally sure that they will get ironed out ... and then it seems to me we have reached a plateau ... where perhaps we can get rid of chasing the next body all the time. A D3 (and D2x for most) is good enough now ... that I can see it being my last body for ten years. Is that a daydream ... or have we arrived?

Even if Canon did offer more features, it would come at a price ($1800+)
I am shooting with a 350D and can't wait for the 40D. Here's hoping they lower it to $1250. IMO, this is still a big upgrade!
