I think Anti-dust feature is useful ( BTW, does it really work ? )
4 more MP is also a plus.
I like the new brighter VF
I am not sure if the battery life is improved. I once shot 7,200 shots off one charge with 1Ds2.

Why are we arguing if there are enough of improvements ? After all, they are selling the newer one @ the same price as the old one.

Here's a short video of the 1Ds MkIII:

My impression thus far is that it obviates the need to always be blowing the Giottos into the chamber, thus having the secondary effect of keeping my viewfinder much cleaner. I've only had to use the blower once in 4500 shots for one large piece of crud that found it's way onto the sensor early on (may have been some production-related gunk). I shoot at high f/stops all the time, so this issue is important to me, and was a huge PITA with the 1Ds.

Glad to hear that it seems to be effective. Dusts are really bothersome.

Maybe not. When the AF doesn't work cleaning and spotting isn't necessary.

yea the dust removal feature works. I am getting no dust spots after a few thousand exposures on the MK3.
I recall a wedding I shot on the 1DS2 & i had a massive blob in nearly every (1000 +) image.
Nearly every shot that was used was able to be fixed up with a bit of pp, however, there were about a dozen that I could not get right. Not a huge deal but a pita none the less.
Anyhow, based on that feature alone I am tempted by the 1DS3..... well, it has some other cool attractions.

The dust removal is just one of the features that will make me upgrade to the MK3, glad to hear this works. The 12% increase in mega pixels is just a small reason why to upgrade, but is nice putting the 8 bit file size up to 60megs. This resolution combined with the Zork shift adapter will yield 50 + mega pixel files that are exceptional for product photography. Also the live view feature makes product photography a real time event when tethered to the studio workstation. This should speed up art director input for complicated shoots. But the real deal maker is the 14bit processing and new sensor that improves noise. This alone is worth the upgrade. Now all we need are some real samples! The 1dMK3 samples are spectacular, so if the 1dsmk3 equals these my order will go through. I know the focus problem is something that needs fixing, but this should be OK by then. The ability to calibrate lenses to the body should fix many of the focus issues.

I'm looking forward to using Live View zoom to focus tilt lenses. I often find it very difficult to get exact focus with TSE lenses in the field. I was very confident when I first got 35mm tilt lenses, due to my consistency when using view cameras. But I find I just plain suck with 35mm TSE in anything other than near ideal conditions.

The AF issues are nothing but operator error on both of the new III"s.

Nikon tops SLR customer satisfaction survey
Posted by Stephen Shankland
Well, this news isn't going to go over well at Canon.

According to a new survey by J.D. Power and Associates, Nikon is the clear leader in customer satisfaction among digital SLR (single-lens reflex) customers in the United States. Adding insult to injury, SLR newcomer Sony came in second.

A new customer satisfaction gives Nikon SLRs the lead.

(Credit: J.D. Power and Associates)Nikon scored 822 out of a possible 1,000 on a rank of how well its cameras measured up with the qualities consumers find important.

"It dominates in digital SLRs,"

, who cares Some silly JD Power survey isn't going to change the fact that Canon leads the 'prosumer' market by a wide margin.

This is just the old Nikon name from the old film days. Most people think of Nikon as the "Pro' Camera" even though most pros don't anymore. This is good for all of us, it will make Canon more responsive to its customers and hopefully drop prices.

Please forgive me if this has been hashed out elsewhere in this monster thread.
I'm in line for my father's 1Ds MKII as soon as he has a 1Ds MKIII in hand. Thus, I'm a little excitable about the release date.
Has there been any news of a concrete ship date? I've done a reasonable web search but found nothing, so I thought I would go to the pros.

One further question- does anyone have experience using a 17-40L on a 1Ds MKII? I can't quite afford a 16-35 MKII (or at least, not for a little bit) and the rest of my lenses are primes and will work great. I'm only worried about the UWA.

I've used both and believe the 17-40L is a better lens than the old 16-35. I would test several before buying, there is a variance in quality.

I'd be pretty curious to know where you got that information from. Sales of the 30D were down to 2.5 - 5% in Japan for the past 6 months.

Nikon is leader in the units stats, but Canon is still making more Yen ($). Who cares anyway!

Well a lot of people cared enough to vote and bring down the customer satisfaction level....

They are busily improving the specs; new LCDs, working AF, so expect a delay _poke_

They will need to give more then they gave us for me to take a 5k hit and sell my ds2.

Shock and Awe or spark and whimper?

8 meg increase in
3.5 inch screen
OLED screen
High res screen
13 stop dynamic range
dust maid
iso 6400

Add wireless built in and I would buy it.
