8mp - 10mp is barely different in end product.
5fps - 6.5fps ...ditto, barely different.
Liveview? How often would you really use that?
Better AF? Possibly, but I'd be surprised to hear it was significantly better.
I'd say the 40D is a little better than the 20D to 30D upgrade that occurred a while back, and yes, some of the features of this new body are very welcomed but not very 'upgrade material'. What I do like is that it's maintained a small body and has a MkIII's baby brother appeal....Show more →

Gotta disagree with you on this one.. Significant upgrade if all true.
Don't discount that Live View either.. There is a tone of uses for it and until you try it, you won't know. I love it on my Mark III.
Agreed (on the wireless that is - seems to be a fair amount of banter on this thread, surprise surprise)...- wasn't saying it (wireless) doesn't happen already Ron - mostly that it hasn't been happening at this price point. Making this feature set available at a lower cost will make the technology much more widely used than it is. My guess is the use has primarily been in the world of things like MLB, MLS, NBA, WNBA, NFL, etc. etc., etc. A far cry from the world of amateurs and enthusiasts!

I'd say it's a significant upgrade. Better viewfinder, limited sealing (a major lack in the 30D when the D200 and K10D are sealed), much larger buffer, new LCD, what looks like a significant AF upgrade, Liveview will be a big deal to macro shooters and those who want the Wifi addon. The only ho-hum bits are the resolution increase, anti-dust and the higher fps.
The 30D really fell down on features against even the D80 and K10D (both of which are more capable cameras, the 30D's sole advantage being the higher frame rate) and was seriously disadvantaged against the D200. It's now fairly competetive against the D200, only falling down on wireless flash and the lack of configurability against the D200.
Stealth mode... Thinking about it I can see a pro use for it but the amatuer/non-pro? Tiger Woods won't have anything to complain about though.
Live View.... Gimmick in my opinion. If you find it appealling, that's alright. I just don't.
Wifi... again pro feature.
9 Point AF... I would have expected better. Cross point might prove better but I'm not going to hold my breath that it's 30% faster than the 30D.
Dust Reduction System... jury is still out on this one. I've read good and bad.
10mp vs. 8mp... I like how the Amazon add read that you can now get photo quality poster prints. And you couldn't with 8mp?
Also, by reducing the pixels with the RAW images, won't you jeapordize quality?
I shouldn't knock the 40D simply because I not in the market for a new body. For those who are chomping at the bit to get one, I hope the Amazon "leak" wasn't a hoax and the camera lives up to your expectations.
If all is on the level, it will be interesting to see how these features pan out.
Somebody surely would have had to gone to a lot of trouble to make this hoax if it by some chance is one... There were at least two lenses, two cameras, ability to pre-order with email confirmations of the order, etc....
I'd say there's very little chance this was a hoax.
I am not sure what else you want from a $1300 camera:
1. completely redesigned AF sensors - ostensibly giving better AF accuracy than before
2. ALL off center AF points are crosstype - giving better precision than before
3. completely new sensor with MORE light captured despite smaller sites
4. BETTER ISO performance DESPITE 10 vs 8 MP - how many bemoaned a 10MP sensor because of expected worse performance?
5. 14 bit raw files, giving 4 times the color pallette
6. some level of weather sealing
Are you really expecting to buy all the features from a 1dm3 for $1300?
Would someone mind clarifying something for me, Amazon as this:
and for the first time in any EOS camera, the central AF point offers enhanced precision for both vertical and horizontal subject contrast when using EF or EF-S lenses featuring maximum apertures of f2.8 or faster.
Doesn't the 20D, 30D and not to mention the 1-series have this feature? Is this just a confusing way of saying they upgraded it, or...?
If the new battery grip is backwards compatible with the 20D/30D, will the new wireless transmitter also be backwards compatible? The tethered shooting to USB will be mighty handy!
Holy moly!!! I wasn't expecting the 40D to be this good!
I was seriously considering a 1D3 until all the AF problems came up and now it looks like with the 40D, there's really not that big of a reason to get a 1D3.
I just hope the there're no AF problems on the 40D!
