Weather seal on 40D might be overrated so does the D300 or even 1D’s. But we in Malaysia, Thailand & Singapore just to name a few countries and have been surviving for the past 2 years with even XT/350D till today.
Dang this thread got long! 60+ pages! I do think I will likely upgrade to this. I've got enough of a personal investment in the Canon brand for my tastes to stick with it. The technical differences between Canon and Nikon may be there, but as many have said, these are really nitty gritty details. All I care about is taking pictures, and this is enough of a step up from my XT to do so...to spend $500 more on a body and at least that on accessories to take advantage of a few added features just isn't worth it for me. I'll happily fire away on a 3" LCD, use Live Preview when I can, and enjoy the wireless transfer capability.
Back on topic of discussing 40D news, I'd not seen anyone post about the B&H update. There's no new info here, but B&H did post some Canon info recently on the 40D...basically saying they expect it in stock in September..., and releasing the technical info we all already know:
I placed my order with my dealer a few days ago but I think I am going to withdraw it as a question came up from a friend regarding the self cleaning sensor. Where does that dirt go I read and read but could not find out so I went to the place I should have in the begining, Canon. Here is ther reply to me by email
Lou
Dear Louis Buscher:
Thank you for your inquiry about the EOS 40D. We value you as a Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
The low pass filter on the front of the CMOS sensor is attached to an
ultrasonic vibrating unit that shakes the loose dust particles off of
the surface. The freed dust is then captured by an adhesive material
that keeps the particles from becoming airborne again once the camera
moves. The material shouldn't ever require replacement, but if it does
require replacement, the camera will need to be sent to us.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we
can be of any further assistance with the EOS 40D.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Erik

PS I underlined the one part as I would think there is a good chance of this having to go back and it does not say if there is a charge.======= Lou
lbuscher, First, you can turn the cleaning function off, and second, if you change your lens properly, you should not get much if any dust on the sensor. I don't normally have to use my rocket blower but rarely - once every few months, and I change lenses frequently.
Ron
Not sure that the D300 is weather sealed. While the D200 was widely advertised as having "body seams seals" the D300 description only mentions "button seals".
Nevertheless, the body seams, given a good design, might be tight enough not be a problem. On the other hand, the gaps that open and close during the normal usage of the camera - battery, CF door, buttons - are much more important to have sealed. The same goes to zoom lenses as well.

Good point about changing our lens 'properly' but...things do happen while changing lenses sometimes. I think about the guys shooting the war and how dust/bullets and everything else flying around in that type of environment.
I still don't know if I like the idea of the self-cleaning sensor. Let me restate...it's a great idea, but I don't know about the way that it's currently implemented.
I have an XTi right now and I change lens' often and have never had dirt on my sensor. You still be very careful, but it gives you a little comfort zone. Problem is some folks get too comfortable and they will end up with dirt because they got careless.

I never thought I had dust on my sensor until I started shooting some landscape shots and testing at f16 and f22. It certainly showed up in those shots
Anyways, I've got my 40D on order from Henrys in Toronto. Compared to my 300D it is an awesome upgrade and the price is great.
I would also think that removing dust as soon as you change lenses would not give it a chance to stick. I ordered mine from Amazon within 3 hours of the first posting of the 40D. Amazon still shows a delivery date of 9/24.
