*I understand it's an upgrade from the 20D, I just don't see the big jump from *the 30D.

*Lower noise? How do we know that?

we don't. it shouldn't be worse. it might be 1/3 stop better. 1/2 stop if we are super lucky. but probably about the same. we'll see. if resize 10MP down to 8MP then it would surely have at least a bit less noise than 30D at 8MP. it definitely has less chroma noise blobs if you turn on the chroma NR.

*sRAW? Is that significant?

not for most (anyone? anyone?)

*Higher frame rate? I must've read a different spec sheet.

obviously you did it has 30% higher fps!

*Live view? Meh.

but it is nice to focus at near 100% for exacting landscape, portrait, macro work! could be nice for certain remote sports work. can help for certain types of photjournalism shots. the stealth modes could be very nice to have. wouldn't hurt to do a quick live scan of exposure across a field or something.

*Silent shutter? The 30D was loud?

yes! believe me it is loud when you are shooting a speaker and the whole darn crowd turns around and starts chuckling at you because each click echos across the whole room! jsut about every PJ student i've been working with at the paper has had more than one such occasion. should help candid street photographers too. and for super skittish wildlife.

*Viewfinder update? Missed that one in the spec sheet too.

guess you did . supposed to give a view about the same as from a 1DMkII now! also has easily replaceable focus screens.

* I really need to get my info. from somewhere else it seems. (NOT sarcasm! I really mean my source seems to suck.)

it does

*Bigger LCD? I thought it was the same size? And nobody seemed to care about the bigger LCD on the 30D...

check your source again. why not just the official spec sheet?
moreso than just larger it has a larger color gamut. one would hope one could now check color balance and exposure on it in the field now. we'll see.

*ISO always on? Could do that with a 30D firmware update.

true, lots they could do with firmware updates, but they don't. not that i like that they don't but they don't.

*New menu system? LoL, um, okay...

come on, it's a revolution!!!!

*Digic III and 10MP? That's the only real upgrade as far as I can tell.

not so minor when you have the new chroma blob reduction, highlight tone priority (yes, it does give a large improvement to some types of scenes), if you happen to shoot some stuff jpg only they now use the better sharpening algorithms of 1-series, more detail and less haloing. 14bits might help at least a little reduce all sorts of heavy processing errors and perhaps help out the highlight prioty mode.

*Deeper buffer? Of course it's bigger -- because of 10MP. Same number of pictures stored.

check that source again . they more than doubled number stored!

*So what you all seem to be saying is the 30D was a desperate, revenue-generating release -- as was the MkIIN, apparently. But at least they were honest by marking that an "N" instead of giving it a new model number.

yeah

*So the lesson is to never buy an in-between model from Canon. How does one know which products are tweeners if they don't apply "N" or something?

look at the specs. just not the ones provided by your source .

also you forgot:
AF is 30% faster.
outerpoints AF can also sense vertically.
center point has vertical also to 1/3 depth of focus sensitity with fast lenses.
3 custom settings to almost realtime dial in changes.
you can edit custom picture styles on PC and upload them for use.
i would've said auto iso except they messed it up beyond all comprehension.

The Brits don't have to moan all alone, whole Europe can join in the moan-fest. The price difference is so big in Switzerland I could buy another 350D for that price, but then I need it, and if the store gives me a good warranty and so on I might go for it. We are paying around 1900 bucks.

It'd almost be cheaper for me to fly to the States and buy one, than pay the local retail price... Works out to be US$1750 here, so not quite as bad as for some countries.

Oh wait, I see he uses Canon gear. It's gotta be #1 now for sure.

i vote #3. canon has official specs released and yet he claims to still be relying on a secret source for 40D specs! and the source is wrong about half the stuff! what sense does that make? so, yeah, #3.
but hopefully for his head's sake #1

Are you saying that the 40D has this capability? With the 10D, 1DMII, 5D, & 1DMIII I have been using the TC80N3 remote to do time lapse. Really great for sunsets.

Sorry, I meant that the 40D and the WiFi transmitter are perfect for timelapses. I have just done a long term (7 week) timelapse of a film set being built with a 20D. I had to check on it every day. Would have been great to simply set it up that I could monitor it at home or on the road.

Cheers,

Mark

$1788 on current exchange rates i've just paid.

I must admit if I could guarantee clearing customs untouched then casing out a cheap day trip to New York was quite tempting.

I'm pretty excited about the 40D, especially since the 30D, IMO, was only a representation of what the 20D should've been in the first place, and wasn't worth the expense and bother of 'upgrading' for me. Don't get me wrong; the 30D is a great camera, but it's full of features that Canon seemed to finally put on its mid-range dslr after the competition forced it, many of which could (should) have been added to the 20D via firmware. With the 40D it looks as though Canon now has a full-featured (emphasis on 'full'), high performance dslr that's even more affordable than the preceding two; a camera most of us will be satisfied with for quite awhile. I love my 20D to pieces and find that it "still" performs wonderfully and does just about everything I would need a camera to do (as much as people complain about it, I'm frankly quite impressed by the high ISO performance of the 20D! Maybe I'm remembering film too vividly...), and it will continue to do so as will the 30D for its owners for as long as we use them. But the improvements in the 40D are quite impressive to me, and seem to offer a lower priced alternative to the 1-series cameras while still delivering amazing levels of performance and imaging. What would we have said about a camera like this only four years ago?

I've been ready (almost financially as well) to upgrade from a 20D.

My first thoughts were with a used 1D MkII, but today, I began to consider a 5D. It was while looking for topics on the latter that I ran across the 40D thread.

I don't do a lot of photojournalism any more.

I mostly focus on Portraits, Events, and Music/ Concerts.

For portraiture, I think the 5D would probably be best because of the FF, sensor, ISO performance, ect.

For events, I'm being lured to the 40D. sRAW would be amazing.

For concerts, the high frame rate and buffer of the 1D Mk II would be good.

I'm ready to buy within a month.

Any input?

Everyone is talking about the 40D being weatherproofed. It doesn't see that on Canon's website. Did I miss something?

None of the Canon DSLR cameras are advertised as being WeatherProof.

There is a big difference between weatherproof and weather resistance.

I haven't seen it mentioned here but Canon released this today

http://www.usa.canon.com/html/templatedata/pressrelease/20070820_40d.html

This is going to be my upgrade from my 20D.I was seriously considering the 5D, but this camera has so many new worthy features.

I think I'll be selling my 1D Mark IIn and getting two of these puppies. The wireless option is what interest me the most.

There's a thread about getting a 40D or 5D going right now. I'm sure you saw it. It's a hard decision without knowing the real world performance of the 40D. ...get a 40D and there might be some money to spare on lenses. 1.6 crop & added reach might be good for concerts among other things.

Some of the buttons do appear to have some type of gaskets around them. If you look at the close-up of the AF-On button on the back of the camera on the DPReview preview, you can see what looks like rubber gaskets. Some of the leaked pictures that have been floating around for the last week or two (which apparently turned out to be pictures of the real thing) had close-ups of the buttons on top which also appeared to have gaskets inside of their sockets as well. While these certainly don't make a camera weatherproof, they do help to delay the damage a bit. Plus, it doesn't seem to make sense to seal the battery compartment door and the CF door without addressing the buttons in some way. Take a look at that picture on DPReview and see what you think.

OK, ... I've just been programmed to react by the many previous "Who needs instant MLU control?" comments from those who believe that if they don't need a feature, nobody does.

Groveling apologies ;-)
