p.4 #1 · Rumours: D3 something/D200 upgrades and technologies

From diglloyd;

A true-color sensor derives red, green and blue values at each “pixel”, as compared with a color filter array, which can record only red or green or blue at each location—hence the need for interpolation, which degrades image quality. A true-color sensor records 3X the information for each “pixel”. Therefore, a 10-megapixel true-color sensor would have 30-million values to record, versus 10 million for a conventional sensor. Big files, big quality.

-----

If you want to see something interesting, you should check out the 5D files v's the Sigmas SD14. The sigma of course has the foveon 'full colour' per pixel chip.

What is shows of course is what a full colour chip is capable of doing. So even if Nikon were to release something, they could do an 8MP (which is twice resolution of the SD14) and you have potential to have some pretty amazing results.

Well, Foveon "cheats", in a sense, because their pixel count isn't the same as the photo site count. They use the latter.

(Having typed this, it's only fair to say that, in a way, Bayer cheats too by interpolation.)

A 10 Mpixel Foveon (3x3.4) sensor will perform on par with a Bayer 6 mpixel sensor. This much became clear in comparisons between the Sigma SD10 and the Canon 10D/300D. The SD14 (3x4.6) will perform like an 8 Mpixel Bayer sensor.

A Sigma SD10 RAW file will average 7.7 MB. A Canon 10D RAW file will do 6.7 MB. Not too dramatic, given the relative quality output of the two cameras. (I used the DPReview numbers for the comparison.)

I know, what I deglected to add , and I should have, was that the foveon chip seems to up-res very well. Or more to the point, much better than I thought. And certainly better than anything I've been able to do with a traditional sensor from Nikon or Canon.

Nikon COULD be announcing something this week...

There are some interesting symptoms...
http://nikonblog.wordpress.com/2007/08/16/d3-announcement-imminent/

+ a german forum has shown something about two cameras and a number of lenses... this has been repeated and the posts have been removed... maybe because of a problem with official information under embargo otherwise why would people remove discussions about rumors...all the links to the german info were dead moments after the info was published... it is interesting to know that the IFA (Berlin, Germany), the biggest CE show in the world next to CES is starting in the coming days, a perfect moment for announcements...
Some french forums are also talking about an announcement this week (23 or 24 Aug).
The fact that the forum was german is interesting because I already have seen embargoed information in the past which was right and reliable (in Germany), weeks before the announcement, Germany being used as a test market with selected users. In this particular case, I don't have any source and anyway I would shut up, but even if I also laugh at most rumor threads, in this case, there could be something....

I am not really in the market for new stuff on the short term, but I always find new technology or possibilities interesting...

Guy

I would be astonished if Nikon didn't announce new bodies and other equipment next week. It's not just that the rumours have a momentum that's hard to ignore, there is a serious need for Nikon to do something significant in terms of product. They've not been sitting around for the past two years fiddling while Rome burns and now it's showtime.

I'm in no position to buy anything either but I agree that it will be fascinating to see what sort of technology I may be able to get my hot little hands on in the next 18 months.

Roll on Thursday . . . .

gugs, thank you for the heads up!

Either way i believe an upgrade is coming up soon and although it might not be a revolutionary "Canon killer" i´m pretty sure it´s gonna be one sweet piece of equipment!

Plenty of smoke already. It's pretty obvious something big is in the works.

D200X (new sensor, same body?)
D3X (full frame)
new lenses (AFS DX for the consumer side, maybe AFS refreshes of 35mm lenses)

What i wouldnt give for a D75/D60 camera though, with D70 interface (2 dials, top LCD, buttons, AF motor) and D40 6MP sensor technology/Image processor with better anti-moire performance. Pair this body with a few new affordable DX primes (16mm 3.5, 35mm 1.4, 70mm 1.8 VR, 180mm 2.8 VR) and i'd be one very happy kid next year if and when i overhaul my kit!!

just wait..... the auto-focus will ACTUALLY work!!!

to be honest I'm somewhat skeptical about the 51 point auto focus, should we call it CAM10,000 or what?? doesn't seem to follow Nikons previous paterns, but who knows.... I hope that there are two bodies.... (not that I'm actually in the market for a brand new flagship SLR) but ultra high res doesn't appeal to me as much as high speed and accuracy in an SLR... for high res work, I'll just pop down to my local shop and pick up an H3D.....yeah, right.........

the business press (buying and selling shares, etc.) has stated for a couple of months that D200 and D2X replacements are due out 2H 2007.

I'm looking very forward to the new releases. I'm in a total holding-pattern as far as spending right now. Not sure when or what is coming, but for some reason, I think this next release will be very enticing - I suppose each new release is.

Worst case scenario is that I'll have one fun ole time reading all the specs on the new gear. It should make a good read if I can't end up affording it.

An AFS version of the 85 1.4 would go well with the "D3". In fact, while Nikon is at it, I hope they make it 1.2.

I'm torn. I am excited at the prospects of further DSLR development, and anxious to see what Nikon "does next" in the pro bodies particularly, but I'm also concerned that all the talk and buzz on the net and the camera shops seems to be towards the introduction of a FF body. This won't fit well with my needs I don't think, and I don't want to pay for a larger sensor when I long for small RAW files and speed and lens reach.

I guess I just hope Nikon sticks to an "X" and "H" format in their pro bodies, because the technology that everyone is buzzing about is expensive, and I just plain want a pro D3H that has a 6-8mp file, blazing speed, and carries on the Nikon D1H/D2H tradition of terrific small file images, awesome AF performance, top build quality / durability, and DX type sensor for lens reach.

I appear to be in the minority. All is well though, I still love my D2H.

Damn...I just bought a D200... I'm going to feel kind of crappy if they come out with an upgrade for it...especially if its the same body and a new sensor! :s

One thing I'm worried about is whether or not Nikon will introduce full-frame, and how it will affect all of us with our DX lenses. I would hate to be buying expensive equipment (DX lenses) that will be rendered useless in the near future...

Exactly the reason I'm excited about a new release. I am simply astonished that D2HS's can still sell for $3000 in light of other equal options on the market (D2X's can shoot just as fast and sell for less used, and canon has several options which are arguably nicer). Anyhow, that's all beside the point. I want the D2H to drop below 1000 used and D2X around 2000
