What .... ? Does this mean your not getting your Mark 3 soon? I have been waiting for you to get your 1DMark 3. I always love your soccer shots and was really looking forward to hearing about your experimenting with the settings. Also I wanted to see how you resolve which lens on which body.
Oh well. Your timing is so good the 3 fps will be enough for you.
Yes I'm still cheerleading. I'm one of those who want this camera to succeed.
And I got a JC Penney price on it, so I'm willing to wait. I bought a 1DsMkII last week to tide me over in the meantime.

Hey, I want it to succeed more than anyone. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does with the new firmware. If the AF works the way it should, this camera will definitely knock your socks off.

You can take me off the "yes I have a problem" list. The firmware update fixed my issues with my 400 f5.6L and ever so slightly soft BIF images. I went out and shot 800 frames this afternoon and instead of 5 or 6 nice sharp images I got about 700! Plus now when I experiment with the grp III custom functions I can actually see how it affects the AF tracking and the Oof shots are totally out not just slightly.
Happy mkIII camper here!
This is just one that probably would have jumped focus in the past as well.
Great photo of the tern (Elegant or Lesser Crested?) Rich. Can you give a brief run-down of your C.Fn. settings - would be much appreciated.
Mine came into the store here in the UK this morning. After numerous phone calls, e-mails and hours of deliberation and feeling sick I have bitten the bullit and parted with an incredibly large amount of cash for me!
It will be with me tomorrow afternoon and will get a thorough test at the weekend.
Been following this thread since the beginning. Got mine a week ago and no issues whatsoever. My sense is that there haven't been any recent deliveries with THE AF "Issue". Any suggestions to the contrary?

No not at all. I've intended to get a 1DsMkII all along as companion to the III, but was hoping to wait at least till later in the fall, thinking maybe the used price on them would drop some more when the 1DsMkIII is announced. But with my Mark III still not here and football season fast approaching I got nervous about having nothing left in the bag except the 400D, so I went ahead and grabbed one.
My III order has been pending since May with "the vendor who shall not be named," on a special price that's still good enough for me to continue waiting for, for at least a while longer.
And thanks for the kind words, but my timing's definitely not what it used to be. I was fishing dry flies in Montana last week, and I bet I missed fifty fish. :-(

can you confirm the same issue like in other forums (POTN & Naturascapes) about the new firmware 1.1.0 ?? The number of keepers has increased using the Ring of Fire in detriment of the Center Focus AF point, in other words, Center AF only is delivering a bigger amount of OOF than with vers. 1.0.9
So what's the story so far?
I read almost all of this thread and try to summarize things to see if I've got the right picture.
Facts:
1) Some (half?) of the 1DmkIII's have problems with the AF (AI-Servo)
2) The problem is independent of serial numbers
3) Two firmware updates have been brought out (1.0.9 and 1.1.0)
4) The new firmware solves some problems, for a few owners it solves all their AF-problems
5) According to a German dealer, a hardware update is also necessary to solve the problem completely.
Now the questions
1) Is the above correct (at least at headlines)?
2) Is there a serial number above which the problem doesn't occur? I know this contradicts fact #2, but it could be that recent buyers don't have the problem anymore.
I think you've summed up the current status very well.
One thing I'd add...
Canon has acknowledged the AI focus issues, and has stated (Chuck Westfall) that the current 1.0.9 and 1.1.0 firmware releases are not intended to fully address the issue. They are planning to address the issue more completely in the near future (not clear if this will be another firmware update, or some other type of fix).
Just to let you know that my Mark III has a serial number of 504xxx, which is one of the earlier shipped units. I received it from the first shipments made by B&H Photo and it has worked perfectly in all aspects. That includes BIF and sports photography using AI Servo mode.

Can you refer me to this statement has stated (Chuck Westfall) that the current 1.0.9 and 1.1.0 firmware releases are not intended to fully address the issue. please.
I had some serious problems with AF on my mkIII. It wouldn't lock focus on static subjects. First one sharp, the others in a series varaibly OOf. Second AI servo didn't track very well. After updating to firmware 1.1.0 I am happy to say that AF now seems to work as it should. I tested a couple of hours with flying swallows against a bright background, and teh Af-behaviour is noticably beter IMO. No other problems at all. serial 511XXX

Here's the exact para from the article Nill has a link to. And technically, Westfall was only talking about the 1.0.9 because I'm not sure we knew there was a 1.1.0 at that point. Obviously, there's gonna be more fixes of various types......
Westfall statement:
"We're not claiming that this new firmware is a panacea for anyone who has had anything wrong with the camera," Westfall said. "We're continuing to research the issue very carefully to make sure the camera is doing what it is supposed to do. If there's anything about that camera that isn't a 100 percent, we're going to find out what can be done to fix it."
