Actually, CPS generally do have equipment requirements, refer here:
it is different here then as there are no equipment rqmts...and no website for that matter...so i amend my remarks to be only related to cps in the us...thx for pointing this out as many fm'ers are not from the us.
gene, my apologies for barking at your post, i stand corrected.
that's what grandpa would call me getting served up a big slice of humble pie.
This link used to go to useful FAQs and other useful information. Now it goes to a registration site. That information is no longer available unless you are aregistered CPS member, which requires 2 professional dslrs and 3 L lens.
Here is the link to register as a CPS. It requires 2 Pro DSLR and 3 L lens:
"Those who wish to become a CPS member must meet the following minimum equipment ownership requirements:
2 Professional SLR bodies
3 L-series lenses
Click here to view a full list of qualified equipment"
Though I just now looked at the list the list contains non-L lens and non-Pro cameras, so that is very confusing. But that is beside the point, apparently Canon USA requires not equipment, but professional credentiials.
Now should your degree of professionalism matter for support when you have shelled out the same money on their equipment? They should give the same support regardless IMO.

I don't know where you get your information but it is totally wrong. CPS has no website or any special informatoin, for members or otherwise. The website you posted is for Canon Europe and hardly some hidden treasure trove of information that is not totally public now with a simple google search. There is no special info you cannot get anywhere else. They have no equipment requirements although they do ask you what you have, which is to guage what you do with your equipment and what you might need them for. Also CPS does not repair cameras. All service is done by the same Canon techs that service everyone. It does get you to the top of the queue ASAP. Also a CPS rep will follow your repair and help troubleshoot any problems in the repair process. They are not technicians.
Geno, The USA is not a country in the list to register for CPS on the Europe site, I see you can get on the mailing list if you hit countries not listed.
I don't know why there should be equipment requirements...I like the US way better. What if your paper buys all your equipment, you only have a few pieces for personal use but now and then you use that for work. One breaks down and you need it back quickly. That person should qualify for CPS. The US people don't have hard and fast rules for many reasons, like this one example. Many photogs are never published but run photography businesses...they get in too so there is more than one way to skin this cat. Gene, you are in the US and the application process is straightforward enough, give a call and have them send you an application forgetting about what the other countries do. Talk to them beforehand if you have questions. They want to keep customers happy, especially the ones the buy a lot and use a lot of equipment, so sounds like a good case to be made.
To be eligible for membership to Canon Professional Services, you need
To be a full time working professional photographer *
To own/use two or more Canon EOS professional bodies (ie. EOS 3 and above) and three or more L-Series or specialist EF lenses
This implies both criteria, what I said before about making money and "own/use" so this would cover the example I used about the newspaper photog. You see what they are getting at, it is not only about a person's equipment list...this actually is more or less what the US does, but again, the US does NOT say you have to own two or more...but neither does the Aussie site..."own/use" is not the same as "own."
The truth is CPS gets you a loaner...which is nice backup but will not help you in a pinch because they have to ship it to you and that takes time. Plus you have to use what they have on the shelf, they may or may not send you the same camera or lens, just something that will get you through. The rush service is a nice concept, but I question it in reality. I got the same service before joining CPS as after, mostly if you want it fast, you call them and follow it through the process...that is what works.
I have mixed feelings about criteria. Maybe they should have a "big spender" loaner program. But in practice, CPS is just backup. Maybe it is more in Europe and other places...here what it offers is limiited. Nikon's, if I remember, is the same way...NPS and criteria is the similar so this is not unique to Canon.
Wow, this thread as taken a new direction. And FedEx said they delivered it today so will call tomorrow...you bet, not going to rely on stickers to make sure it gets fixed.
As an Aussie CPS member I can tell you this much
The criteria is you need to be a full time pro deriving your income from photography.
You need 2 pro bodies & 3 L lenses.

Cheers,

I second that Paul. It is important that you main source of income is from photography plus the above criterias
What is the current situation with your Mark 3? Did you return it for replacement? Send to Canon for correction? Waiting to see if Canon releases some sort of firmware that might help? Giving up on it?
I am sorry for the derailment. I have no problem with CPS being restricted to pros for things like loaners etc. My beef was that basic faq and other information, which is lacking in Canon manuals (like IS on a tripod etc. ), is now privileged! Geez.
Anyhow, it has nothing to do with 1D Mark 3 AF. Back on track now I hope.
I have been following the saga of your 1dMk3 AF issue Fabloid. What's the scoop? I gave up and bought a 1d Mark IIN, but now this has become like reading a long drawn out novel to me and I am wondering how it will end
I just called Canon Tech Support at the Jamesburg facility in NJ, asking them about the "alleged" Firmware release date of today, they have no news on this as we spoke
CPS just called me back and said that my camera will go out tomorrow and I will have it Friday. They have installed the latest firmware 1.0.0.9 on it. They comfirmed to me that the new firmware addresses several issue which include the AI servo tracking and the softness of the LCD. The strangest part of the conversation was that he said the firmware will not be available on the web for another month? I'll let you know what I have on Friday.
