Canon made a marketing mistake with the 1D mk3. It shouldve been 12 megapixels, I know not much difference from 10 in practical terms BUT marketing wise it helps it separate it even more from the many 10mp DSLRs available today.
Canon make cameras, they are not a marketing agency.

The extra 2MP gives more usable life to the 1D mk3 and becomes an alternative to current 5D owners that wish to upgrade without having to give up MP.
The1Dmk3 is aimed at a completely different user than the one for the 5D. The 1Dmk3 is perfectly suited to the uses and requirements of the pro market segment (PJ, sports) it is aimed at. high iso with low noise, long battery life, completely customisable, live view, dual digic 3, 10fps, anti dust features, dedicated wifi transmitter and not to forget ... the improved strap These are things which matter to this market segment, not an extra 2mp. I would say that the 10mp is a bonus as it allows for smaller files sizes which can be easily transmitted from a laptop via a mobile.
I have seen lot's of camera rumors, but I've never seen anything like the 40D. This has to be the most rumored, speculated, and discussed pre-release camera in history. I hope that it will live up to the hype..
I think it will be DIGIC III, 10 mpix, antidust and a few minor software tweaks. Body won't change (or just marginally, no wether sealing), sensor will stay APS-C sized, AF won't be improved (or it will be taken from the 5D at best) and I don't think fps will be any higher.
Here'a a link to a Canon rumor dedicated site, with lots of rumors and speculations: ...
I doubt I would buy the 40D based on all the specs in all the rumours that have been doing the rounds. Another 2mp doesn't do it for me. IMO I think it would be a big mistake for Canon to go with 10mp since the competition will soon start going 12mp within the 18 month life cycle of the 40D leaving Canon behind again in the MP war.
I'd rather see it at 8 mpix, with lower noise, a bit higher DR. 12 mpix on crop is madness, virtually no lens can resolve that resolution. Most of the lenses can't resolve 5D's resolution, which is FF (larger image circle).
Most of you don't need more than 8 mpix anyway. It's enough for A3 prints. If you print your photos on bilboards, then you should know that 4 mpix is enough . Keep in mind that higher resolution brings larger files, larger files lead to the need for larger memory cards, hard drives, faster computers etc.
Mpix race sux, we've seen that in compact cameras. IQ that the newest compact cameras deliver is far worse than those on 3-4 years old models. I think that 1,6x crop should be limited to 8 mpix (too late for that, now it could be only to 10), 1,3x crop to around 15 and FF to 20. Besides that I doubt any existing zoom lens can even resolve 20 mpix. Only top of the line tele primes...

I agree with that. I doubt I'll be upgrading my 20D to a 40D. The exception would be if they offer weather sealing. I doubt that Canon will on the 40D so I doubt I'll be upgrading.
The way I see it ATM, I'll be spending my upgrade money on better lenses. That's the way I'll improve image quality.
I'll take that back, I would buy a used 5D if a good used one at a fair price came along.
I think I would pay almost the cost of a 5d if they could put the af mechanism of the MKIII into the 40d. 10 Mpix would be nice, but the AF is the thing for me. No matter what else they put in that puppy, if it doesn't have a significantly upgraded AF system, I don't think I would be interested. Supposedly the photosites of the MkIII are optimized to the sensor size in a way that lessens the noise beyond even that of the 5d. I wonder if they go with 10 Mpix, if it will be the same sensor as the MkIII

Hello I was wondering if this is true. How many mpix can lenses resolve? Does anyone know?
I would just like to see it on the street so i can then find a cheap 30d to buy. My assistant (wife) is currently using my old 10d and a new 30d would be a nice upgrade for her especially if i could find one cheap or barely used.
