When asked about yet another extention of the 5D rebate till the end of July my shop in Toronto said that their Canon Rep had told them that 2 new bodies are planned for release late this year.... 3D to replace 30D and 7D to replace 5D line up. Annoucements to be officially made in September ....
Its a big canon dealer so I don't know what to think.
That would be a nice 1.6x camera, live view, 5fps, 10mp high density shooting, sealed.
It would really cut into Mark III sales for nature photographers, if its focus is decent. I don't think Canon will offer live-view or weather sealing on it.

Who knows?
Well the 20D and 30D didn't really cut into the 1D Mk II/n sales and had similar features, They where all 8mp cameras, and the 20D/30D are only 3/fps slower then the 1D2/n.
There will always be a market for the 1 series cameras, even if Canon added weather sealing to the 40D as most will buy the 1D Mk III for the improved AF, the extra fps, better viewfinder, larger sensor size and better build quality.
If Canon did not add some features that are not in say the Nikon D200, then some might argue that it's not being very competitive in it's own market segment. Surely Canon can come up with some improvements that would at least put it clearly ahead of the D200 wouldn't you think?

Indeed. Big&bright D200 style viewfinder is one thing, modified body design and a few minor updates. I don't believe we'll see 7fps, substantialy better AF (5D's could be better, which is almost identical anyway), live view 3" LCD, 1,3x crop sensor, over 10 mpix etc. But I hope Canon will implement some of the 1D mkIII software adjustments (fine focus, AV range etc). The only thing we can be sure about is, that dust reduction and digic 3 will be implemented.
The Olympus page is one I extracted from the purported 'leaked' Olympus marketing pdf which is still available for download (Out of curiosity, I tweaked it to see how many places copied it without any attribution ;-)
It was 'hidden' behind some graphics on page 10 and extracted using acrobat ;-)
If it's a fake then someone has far too much spare time - there is a lot of marketing related info on the new Olympus stuff. I'd suspect a deliberate leak to raise the profile of the Oly kit (which it has) It says mid October for the (official) press campaign
Most consumer (or prosumer) bodies have been announced the third week in August, while pro level bodies have almost always been announced in September.
Interestingly enough the pro level bodies that have been announced in September have always been announced on a Tuesday.
So that blogger goes out on a limb and using his cristal ball sets the 40D announcement on August 23rd.
The same logic would put the release of the Canon 1Ds Mk III on September 25.

The only thing I worry about as I sit and wait to buy one, is if it'll have the sensor that is on the XTi. That will be a dissapointment. All I really want in a repalcement to my 20D are:
Features:
ISO in the viewfinder
a bigger (but still bright) display
spot metering for theater
Performance:
less high iso noise/higher dynamic range if possible.
upgraded focusing
They are not likely to do that the pixel size of the 30D and the XTi/rebel are already different, considering this is where the performance in the high iso/noise comes into effect I am sure they would not do that fullstop.
ISO6400 on the 40D will be too much to hope for, particularly if it is a 10mp sensor (which is likely). It will probably be a different sensor from he XTi, with better signal.noise performance.

this doesn't sound like it makes sense. Based on the canon numbering sequence, why would the 5D be downgraded to a lower model with the 30D being upgraded to a near pro camera. The original EOS 3 was basically a pro camera.
I would think the most likely option is the 30D will be replaced with the 40D and the 5D will remain until next year. The xxD lineup has a good spot for people that want a full size camera that is inexpensive but with some pro-level features
Partial thread drift but Samy's in LA is selling the 30D for $999 if you buy any kind of canon lens with it. This is the in store price! For those of you who know Samy's, they are known to have high in store prices. For them to drop to $999 I would definitely say the 40d is right around the corner. Maybe almost here!
July is 1/2 over, and the 1DMkIII is still a dream to the average photographer.
So, maybe the "40D" will actually be introduced in (delayed to) August or September.
my personal 40D wish list:
1> 10MP
2> 6FPS (up from 5FPS)
3> better AF performance (to give edge on new improved XTi AF )
4> larger LCD monitor (2 3/4") will a 3" LCD fit?
5> larger JPG/RAW budder (always good)
Canon could go upscale with the "40D".......similar to the EOS-3,
where it brings professional-like attributes to an advanced amateur camera.
I believe all your wishes should come through. Add to that sensor cleaning (which is a no-brainer) and live-view, at least according to the only feasible leaks I've seen so far.
