I'm kind of thinking now that regardless of what happens with the 5D line, the 40D would be a good buy. If the 5DII comes out in a year, one could resell the 40D at a loss of a few hundred $$ probably, which isn't bad rent for one year. My local shop charges > $100 to rent a 1 series for a weekend.
I have stayed away from this thread for 124 pages.
Currently I am shooting a 20D and a 5D. I plan on buying the 30D replacement within a few months of its release. I am not sure I have the funds to update both my cameras. If it proves to be true that there is a new 5d and a 40d I will be hard pressed to make a decision.
I guess I am jsut going to have to shoot a few more weddings and make some dough.
I still believe the rumors I read about 3 DSLR's this fall. Replacements for the 40D, 5D, and 1DS MKII with the 40D first and the other two a little later.
Canon is going to blow the competition away, at least for now!

1 stop better noise per ISO than the 30D is pretty sweet... that should match 5D's noise performance right?
let's not get carried away, he said that guys post was the most OVERALL correct, but that it still had at the least one thing wrong. and this all assumes that he DOES know what he is talking about.
i now doubt it could go to 10MP and gain a full stop. the 1DMkII was easier for the 1Dmkiii to improve uponnoise wise than the 30D would be for the 40D.

Well, - all three this fall. I don't think so. All three are due, but we wouldn't get all three at the same time.

Why would the 1D mk II (or IIn) be easier to improve on than the 30D (or 20D, - same sensor)?

Rumours are just that..... rumours.
I remember over that last several years that Canon had a few suprises here and there - some of them were new features - some of them were the suprise of 'nothing new'.
So, I see little point, and even less fun in speculating. Personally, I would rather wait for the anouncement, and then everyone can move on to the phases which usually go something like this:
1) Wow! Great new features - or - disapointed, there is not much new here
2) Wow! this new product is brilliant - better than anything before
From my understanding, the 400D sensor has a two-channel read out, as has the sensor in the 350D. The 20D and 30D have four-channel read out, so it's not unreasonable to expect the 40D to have the same. This means that even if it's 10MP, the 40D will not be merely a repackaged 400D sensor.

Hey, it's the photographer that takes the picture, not the camera!
It's just electronics, that won't make you any better as a photographer!
I was just using a bit of humor, trying to lighten up some of these too serious people that act like a new camera is just a new camera or something!
I've been waiting for a new 40D since somewhere around last Christmas. I had hoped very much for March and that didn't happen and I was devastated. Since then I have been looking for one almost daily! I had saved my money and sold my EF-S lens planning to get the 5D then changed my mind and decided on the 40D. I did that last fall.
So yeah, it's just electronics but I really think of a camera much more than that and it really will make me a better photographer!
Hey Johnny, what about cryogenics. You could have yourself deep frozen until the 21st. No wait, that's no good, you'll be waiting weeks for delivery - better make it 10th September. I hear there are places now that you can program your dreams while you are asleep. If I were you I would choose something with no cameras in it.

No cameras! That must be hell!

what's with this x channel read out? What is read out? I thought they all were RGB sensors. :? Can someone please explain?
Parallel data paths - related to how fast the sensor's data can be read and moved on for further processing. Could be the limiting factor in the XTi's 3 frames per second (and why the 40D might have 6.25 fps).
