Hmm, a 1D MkIII lite? Wonder what that means?
I'd guess he's referring to a new AF system in the 40D?
This just might be my Xmas present to myself.

oh, let's hope. and hope teh reason it is called lite is because of the AF!
but it is easier to read it as improved AF.

I would assume tsiphoto is referring to the leak that specified:

10.1 MP
Dust Reduction
3" LCD
Live Preview
6.5 fps burst
3 User Custom Exposure Modes

That would seem to be consistent with the "1Dmk3 lite" comment. From these rumors, people had inferred 14-bit RAW format and some form of lite-weather resistance like the Nikon D200.

If the latter two features are true, then I believe Canon will have an instant winner on their hands. It truly would be a huge step up from the 20D/30D. However, without weather resistance or 14-bit RAW... well, the EOS 40D will look nothing more than the camera the EOS 30D should've been... in 2006.

What I'm really interested to see is whether or not Canon will implement the user-adjustable focus offset in their prosumer dSLR lineup. I hope they do, because it will really alleviate the problems with Canon's poor quality control. If we don't see this feature in the 40D, then I doubt we'll see it on the 5Dmk2 or 450D or any other dSLR outside the 1 series. And that would be a shame.

True, it'd be much appreciated as it would let us tweak to our heart's content to eliminate any front/back focus problems. On the other hand, implementing these features in a consumer camera may open up a whole new can of worms for Canon - they may get flooded by calls from irate customers who, after tweaking the offset in the camera, complain that the camera broke their lenses or something of the sort.

I really believe this feature would help photographers' satisfaction with Canon gear, help minimize the amount of product returns for retailers, and help keep the manufacturer's service warranty costs down. Everybody wins. I'd be sorely disappointed if Canon doesn't implement this feature on all their dSLRs.

What if Canon hides this feature deep inside complicated menus, and the only way to access it is by answering a series of test question to ensure the user's I.Q. level is at least in the triple-digits? heheh.

I've been hoping that the user adjustable focus offset feature would be on the 40D along with live view. Plus, the rumor of a better AF system would truly be a wining combination plus all of the other features that are rumored!

Wow! I can't wait and I'm getting nervous.

Gee, we are all going to need to be in some serious therapy
if this camera isn't announced or it is just a 20D MKIII!

Then we will have to go out and take pictures with just our skill.
Maybe we would then be happy with a P&S with face recognition.

If the 40D does get better AF, and weathersealing I might consider upgrading from my 20D, But if the the specs in the rumours are anything to go by, I will stick with my 20D for another 18 months.

Hmm, will you change your name to EOS40 if you do upgrade?

I think we'll be somewhat disappointed by the 40D... the rumored specs make the 40D sound like an 80% 1DMK3 at 1/4 the price... it's too good to be true. I would love weather-sealing but I doubt it will be.

tsiphoto's comments about 30D like build quality for the 40D... I'm not at all sure I would take that to mean that there is no 'weather sealing' on the 40D. I would say that merely says that the body is of the same quality... as in the same materials... not that it's saying that there wasn't any sealing built into the body.

Anyway, I think it's likely a matter of days before we know for sure.

If you all remember... tsiphoto has been right about the last 2 or maybe 3 new Canon cameras, and posts just days before the official announcement... He doesn't provide a lot of details, but what he does say has proven accurate in the past.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this (mini stuff) written by others several months ago. Not really sure its news for him to be talking about a camera, just before its released, that practically everyone knows about.

tsiphoto has just posted this: "The 40D will go head to head with the Nikon D200 and win in every cat. except built quality.... It wins sensor, fps, af etc.... It is a true upgrade from a 30D..." http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=24403364

He has been right on all previous releases. I believe the 40D will be a substantial upgrade. In another post he also hints that there will be no weather sealing.

Well, only a few days to go and we should know for sure.

As for tsiphoto's posts on the 40D, well you can't get much more vague than that.

"It wins....af.."

If AF performance is improved, this alone would make the 40d a worthy upgrade :P

I think there were more then a few people expecting the 40D to compete head to head with the D200 replacement camera and at least be on par with it. While I will still likely buy a 40D as it seems to stand now, I would too have hoped that Canon was going to make this pretty competitive with whatever Nikon and/or others will be releasing soon... Not... the D200..

But as I say, I'm about 99% likely to buy a 40D if it merely beats the D200 as it stands now. After all, I'm trying to upgrade from a 300D to the best I can afford to buy at around $1300 for a body. (and I have Canon lenses already, as well as flash gear that works with Canon, etc...)
