According to that Yahoo link the screen size is 2.5... but from the pictures it appears the screen size is definitely 3". My XTi has a 2.5" LCD and even on the smaller XTi body there is a big black border surrounding the LCD... on the new posted 40D pictures the borders look much smaller (on a larger body).

The specs on Yahoo and some of the other sites are the specs from the pre-PMA rumor. They are obviously incorrect, assuming that the leaked photo's are legit. Not only for the screen size, but for the apparent weather sealing as well.

On a side note: This does show (or at least tantalisingly suggests) how Canon intends to battle the in-body IS camp, just like I guessed they would. Just offer an IS kit lens.

I doubt it'll be THE kit lens that'll have IS though. Given the difference in cost I doubt they'll straight swap the current kit lens for the 17-85 in the recent picture or the 28-135 IS. Sure, some resellers will bundle but I just can't see the default Canon kit featuring those lenses.

Within the last two weeks there was a rumor of a new 18-55 with IS! for the kit lens. Of course, like you say, there will be other lenses offered in bundles like the 17-85 IS I'm sure and probably the 28-135 IS.

I hope they really do offer a new 18-55 with IS. That would be cool! As long as it is cheap, it will crush (a little) the competition!

I think as long as Canon doesn't include in-body IS, some of the popular websites such as CNET will mark that as a weakness... and ultimately it may affect a significant number of buyers to turn to Sony.

If Canon doesn't include in-body IS it WILL be a significant weakness, though it's also one for its main competitor.

Whatever the merits of the two systems - in-body IS is a good feature that is missing from Canon cameras but in place in Sony, Pentax and Olympus. If a new buyer sits two camera side-by-side, one with, one without, then it may well be a deciding factor.

The trouble is, not only will it not be in place now, but will not be in place for the next couple of years either. I'm also not sure why Canon is not including it and I think it will lose ground for not doing so. It's a worthwhile feature that Canon is deliberately witholding because it thinks it's position is strong enough that consumers will happlily pay more for IS in each lens.

I totally agree with you. In-body IS is becoming a Must-have just like sensor cleaning. People can argue all they want about the 2 features and the merits or lack of them but they have to be there. I believe Live View will also become one of the Must-haves!

None of the expected feature lists for the 40D include the in-body IS feature and I don't think it will hurt Canon much right now but cameras announced next year and past will have to have it. That feature has come about mostly in the last 6 months probably after design was locked so it probably won't have it, but who knows? I would like to see it.

In-body IS: will eventually be available on intro model (i.e. 400D/Xti replacement), but it has been around for a while and non of the companies with it have made a dent in canon's market share. In fact, K-M got out of the biz because they couldn't compete even though they had this vaunted feature. Sony might do a little better, but this is only the make-or-break feature for the low end models bought by the P&S migration segment. If those folks don't get the bug, then they will end up keeping the 2 kit lenses and not buy anything else anyway. If they get serious, they are going to buy the higher end bodies and glass later anyway - and probably switch to then.

Live view: worthless to the P&S crowd, because it won't work like a P&S. In "liveview" mode the mirror is down, so the AF sensors can't do their job. The result is that it is a manual focus camera without a split prism or similar aid.

I certainly hope the $1599 price tag includes the lens, or else it's too expensive for just the body.

I was wondering about that too. It does seem a bit high for a "body only" price. If it were the Body only price, I'd alteast hope for a few more features to set it apart from the 400D, and closer to pro, making it a great backup body for the 1D MKIII.

Maybe BB is trying to clear out some 28-135 IS lenses because Canon is going to introduce a new lens to replace it?

Everyone is excited about the camera, but I agree with David, lens introductions may be the most interesting announcements. The last several releases have been targeted at the upper-end (24-105L, 17-55, 50L, 85LII, 70-2004IS, 16-35II). The 28-135 is a nice kit lens but is outmoded with its 1st generation IS and inadequate wide coverage on a 1.6x crop. I would expect Canon to introduce USM/IS competitors to Nikon/Sigma/Tamron's 18-135 and 18-200 range lenses. At least that is what I am hoping to see in a few weeks.

7D - Who knows - who the heck is "cameraman" who uploaded the 7D UPC? Shouldn't it be Canon USA/EURO/Asia?

5D2 - half of the people on the board heard from a store owner or cousin or some guy off the street about a new Canon 40D/3D/7D/5D2.

I should start submitting UPCs myself.

Canon 10D was registered in 2/06 and 10/03.
Canon 20D was registered in 12/16/2004 - about two weeks after I bought mine.

If you register an UPC account, you could modify an existing item to make an EOS 8D. You will be recorded on Last Modified By field. I have not found a way to enter a new UPC.

In Japan the Elan 7E was called the EOS 7. Perhaps Canon is digitalizing the Elan series: Elan Digital in North America and EOS 7D in Japan. Much nicer name than EOS 40D...

I wish the mods would just rename this thread into: "The Official 40D Rumors Discussion", like we had the "official pre-photokina" and "official pre-pma" topics in the past.

The title and genesis of this "40D IS FOR JULY" thread is just so... moronic. Strangely appropriate though, in an amusing sort of way.
