Ah comon, of course it's possible.

The question is more is it worth it.

Having 117 almost identical bodies to choose between will just make the decision for the custommers harder, - and that actually might lead to lower sales.

So I agree, I don't think its comming either. But not because Canon couldn't easily do it!

Yes, ok, that's something that I implied, rather than said explicitly.

Weathersealing means you need at least two different designs for the magnesium alloy cast outer shell. That's two or three complicated parts either with, or without space for rubber seals. You need two different sets of buttons and dials. You need two designs of, and parts for, the built-in flash (or would the weathersealed version come 'sans' flash?) And so on. It all adds up in costs. And it's possible, but not easy, it involves quite a bit of resources.

Partial or full weathersealing is an option for the 40D. But for Canon to put out a WS and non-WS version? In this price-competitive segment of the market? Not likely.

Apparently a few days ago there was a post from Korean Canon on the launch of Canon 40D with all the photos and full specification on the camera. Not long after it was deleted. Apparently it will launched on the 20th August.

http://www.disitu.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=553
(I am sorry this was the only site I know that contain the information, however it is written in Indonesian.)

A major discovery recently, on 2nd Sept a major store in US will have stock of 40D for a price of 1599.

http://www.disitu.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=590
(also written in Indonesian.)

This only information from our local website. However, if you have other information written in English it would be much better.

Anyway, for those who are waiting for this beast, it will be coming your way, unfortunately in our country it might take another month before we could get our hand on it.... HAPPY HUNTING..

The "W" in the picture on the Northlight site probably means "With", as in with a kit lens. But nowhere do I see any mention of what that lens actually is. And note that the 1599.99 price tag is covering up part of this form. I think it is unlikely that price tags have been printed already so there is no reason to assume that this is really the price of the 40D. There is also a lens cap covering up whatever that price refers to.

As for the BG-E2N grip, it appears that the 40D may be weather sealed so it makes sense that there would also be a new, weather sealed version of the old BG-E2 grip.

OK, the 28-135mm IS comes from the original text of the person who first posted the photo of the Best Buy inventory/order sheet...

He originally posted the photo, and the sentence...

"Also currently listed as including with the 28-135 IS lens."

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=24289327

So, it appears as the listing in the photo, was for the camera without the 28-135mm IS lens... Which would then mean, if that's the body only, it's $100 more then you can currently get the 30D with the 28-135mm IS lens... and/or that the 40D body only is $1600.

I was confused about this issue last night when I posted...

Usually Canon releases a new lens as a kit with a new camera. Why would they slap this old lens on it? Doesn't make any sense.

What else will be announced in August? It has been 35 months since the 1Ds Mk II announcement, is the long overdue 1Ds Mk III finally upon us?

Interesting Canon Survey mentioned on dpreview. Here is the link to take the survey: http://survey.cusa.canon.com/Pub/2wLMJW/Link.html

I did the survey, hopefully it will help. The most interesting question was:

What will be the most important factors in your decision to purchase your next DSLR camera? (pick up to 3 choices)

Higher resolution (# of megapixels)
Improved Autofocus system
Faster frames per second / shooting time
Compatibility with current DSLR lenses / accessories
Larger rear LCD
Availability of "live view" mode
Smaller and lighter weight camera body
More rugged / durable camera body
Integrated image sensor dust removal / cleaning system
Price

Especially when the short end is still 28 mm - hardly a wide angle on a 1.6-er. They were offering this as a kit on the 30D lately - maybe people want the longer lens. I'd prefer the 17-85 myself if anything. Better yet, the 17-55/2.8 but for a kit, that may be a bit expensive.

I agree it sounds unlikely that price tages will be printed yet but the item number on the price tag does match the item number on the main sheet. Unless this is all a really elaborate and carefully thought out hoax?

I just took the survey. That was an interesting question, both in terms of what was asked and what was not asked. I didn't see any mention of increased dynamic range or improved high-ISO noise (though we may be at a point where both can be improved only in tiny increments, if at all).

You could choose other, - and write what. I did so. And asked for better DR, more bits/channel (as on 1D mk III) and higher ISO. That, together with my better AF is a bit more than three, - so I also made a priority list

It's not that miraculous of a hoax. It isn't all that hard to cook up a web page, and the fact that the cap covered part of the tag leads me to think that it is a pricetag for a now discontinued 30D kit.

I think you can still get the 30D kit, but no way the new 40D kit will be only 100 dollars more than the current 30D. I expect 1500+ for the body only.

The UPC on the price tag matches the UPC on the form and the listing on the UPC database that identifies this as a 40D. A lot of trouble to go to for a hoax...

I hear you, Seth: the speculation was fun for a time, but unless the new version (unlikely) shoots at even higher ISO with barely perceptible noise, I'm not going to pay more than 50% what I paid for a new, second 30D just a month ago ($1000, delivered). After all, with two 30Ds, I'm already getting great quality for my needs...I'd rather buy some more glass!

Do we really need yet another 40D rumour thread? I think we should either lock this thread now before it gets out of hand, Or merge the info in the OP with the other 90+ page thread!
