I've always found it difficult to judge one's IQ based on a single data point passed on by an acquaintance over the Internet.
Now, if he said "I know one Canon guy in Mexico, who actually works in technical services, who likes to staple his tongue to the floor, who says that he gets all his "insider information" from forums such as this one."

I think that is a pretty bold conclusion.

That's amazing!!!! There's a guy at canon NJ who does the same thing!
Perhaps my wording wasn't clear enough. English is not my native language.
I know a guy who works at Canon (actually in video) and told me they don't get ANY kind of insider information, even in technical services.
All he knows regarding future releases he finds out through leaks and teasers that get passed around in forums such as these. He doesn't browse them as a part of his job, he just does it as a kind of hobby.
I'm sure your friend in NJ does something similar. Right?
So... a supposed employee of a large retailer in the USA supposedly came across some information at work... took a photo, posted said photo to DPP user forums... quickly took the link to the photo down... yet the people/person who operates northlight-images got a copy of the image and put it up...
Supposedly, the 40D will sell for $1600 with a 28-135 IS lens will be in stock on 9-22-2007... The current 30D with that same lens is selling for $1500 now at that same store.

Ignacio,
I didn't mean to offend you, I was just getting in the spirit of being silly. Yes, it makes perfect sense that the "inside knowledge" is kept as close to the inner sanctum in Japan and elsewhere the employees are kept in the dark.
So from the Northlight link, it looks as if the 40D is for Sept. 2nd. Lucky for me, being underemployed, I'll have to wait a while or until firmware >v1.0 Oh well. :-(
EDIT: Best Buy item number 8472244 does not currently return results.
Over at Northlight there's 2 sets of predicted specs and both list a new BG-E2N grip. Anyone care to speculate how this might differ from the regular old BG-E2? Maybe the 40D won't be using BP-511A's??

Possible weather sealing... N stands for Nature
Maybe old grip is also compatible with 40D.

Not likely. I mean, why would Canon stop using the BP-511(A) batteries? Ok, the 350D and 400D need a smaller size because the grip is too small to house a BP-511(A), but the rest of the dSLR range, from the early D30 on, do just fine with the current form factor.
A new grip doesn't automatically mean a new battery form factor, The BG-ED3 (D30, D60, 10D), BG-E1 (300D), BG-E2 (20D and 30D) and BG-E4 (5D) grip all take BP-511 and BP-511A batteries.

As it happens, I got back from the pub (photographing a Jazz evening :-) checked my mail and someone (not the OP, but someone I've known for a while) had seen the post when it went up. They grabbed the pic and when it vanished (within ten minutes) they emailed it to me ... fortunately lots of people round the world happily mail me content for the page :-)
It's now 10am here and after a good night's sleep I think I'll go down and put the coffee on :-) :-)
Maybe to different bodies... 40D and 40Dw...
With and without sealings...
Keeping two different SKUs, having to implement two manufacturing lines (or at least part of the line split into W and non-W), all the other added complexities... It's quite a bit different from a black or silver 300D or 400D or a low-volume swap-the-filter-and-firmware 20Da.
It's a good thing you put the smiley there because I don't think it's a serious option.

There must be quite a few people in factories somewhere that know something... There also must be people who work for printing companies or in the printing department at Canon who have seen manuals, etc... Surely if this new camera is going to be ready to ship in September, there must be hundreds or maybe even thousands who've seen or know about something...
I can believe that many people who work for Canon do not know... but there have to be a sizable amount of people somewhere in the world that do know more then a little about the new camera.
You really think so?
Most people will produce parts, - they have absolutely no clue what they'll do. The might see that it says 'DIGIC III' on of the the small black things, - before it said 'DIGIC II'. What does that mean?
No specs revealed! They don't even know which camera it'll fit in I guess.
There will be some who knows. The guys producing the boxes might know most. There'll be pictures and descriptions on those (He'll know its a 40D, he'll know some specs etc.)
But I guess that Canon are keeping the amount of people who know at a minimum and makes sure they keep silent.

Ah comon, of course it's possible.
The question is more is it worth it.
Having 117 almost identical bodies to choose between will just make the decision for the custommers harder, - and that actually might lead to lower sales.
So I agree, I don't think its comming either. But not because Canon couldn't easily do it!

I stopped expecting anything quite a while ago. It's fun to do a bit of educated guesswork and harmless bickering on what's next but I've stopped with predictions.
