if this does have 6.25 fps (seems more likely) and 3" screen (was always a lock) i think the 40D will get better reviews than alot of us initially thought it would.

i dont want one but i think it is going to be a good seller especially given the expected 30D pricing.

if you read around the web people are saying the D200 is more useful than the 5D somewhat due to speed (forgetting the noise over iso400) and ergonomics edge to nikon. that is laughable to us but the 40D probably does eliminate that while improving the high ISO image from 30D.

5. ? this does not look like the menu button...

This is a direct access to picture styles. Makes sens, it is already possible to get picture style direct access with one of the custom function on the set button on the 5D.

However there is 3rd button on the top right that I have no idea about. Maybe a fully customisable button?

Button prediction from looking at current Mk III layout

Top Left : Menu & Direct Print (yoo-hooo!)
Top Right: AF-ON, * (AE LOCK, +), Focus point select, -)
Bottom: Playback, Trashcan, Jump, Info, Picture Styles

I don't think there are any mystery buttons on this layout at all. Actually, this is starting to look a lot like a baby 1D Mk III, should be a nice competitor in the crop-factor pro-sumer market sector.

I would agree with the AF-ON button, not sure what else it could be.

If there is a direct picture style button does that mean we can have something exciting on the set button? Like a direct Fred Miranda 50D Rumour button?

Interesting... this thread finally gets information/pictures that look real... and it slows down... (ok, well not at first... but it's been five hours and not a single post)

How much did the 30D sell for when it first came out? Any estimate on how much the 40D will cost when it comes out?

If the Viewfinder diagram is correct, then ISO is now finally displayed. Took 'em a while to figure this is what people wanted.

$1300.
Depending on whether it's 14-bit color or not, I'd expect $1200 or $1300 intro price for the 40D.

Btw, the s-RAW setting indicates either 14-bit color or at least a digic3 processor, IMO. I don't think s-RAW is possible with digic2.
14-bit color would be a killer feature.

Why would any of these rumor sites even think they'd spec DigicII? Canon's P&S cams have had DigicIII for over a year now.

Agree re: sRAW. DigicIII (no brainer) and (throw my hat into the ring with...) 14-bit/color.

I personally don't care about all those extra shooting functions on the top dial. The more they pack onto that knob, the sillier it looks. Custom shooting functions might come in handy (faster access mirror lockup? - if that's possible?), but I'd prefer a custom button in the back or on top for even easier access for custom shoot settings.

Think they will go with Li-Ion batteries as well?

Did they do it for the 1D MkIII? I forget...

Don't know if there's much advantage over NHi batteries. LiI are harder to produce because lithium is vastly more dangerous. It has been known to blow factory rooves off. If the appropriate cells already exist, say for the 1D MkIII, then I imagine Canon will just rationalise their battery production and go with lithium across the board.

Aren't the BP511A and NB2LH already lithium ion batteries?

Ofcourse they are. 1Ds mkII (to the best of my knowlege, I'm to lazy to check it up) is the only one in Canon DSLR line up with Ni-Mh battery.

I'm hoping they bring back the 2CR5 batteries. Gosh I miss paying $20 for a nonrechargeable battery that was good for about 150 shots.

Interesting that the viewfinder layout shows nine AF points. If that's the case, then time will tell whether there are also half a dozen assist points as with the 5D, or it's still just the same as the system in the 20D...

Canon would seemingly be pretty foolish to leave the AF system the same as it was on the 30D... which is also the same as it is now on the 400D(Xti). I hope they are not that foolish, at the minimum I would expect the 5D's system to be used, but actually would hope they do something even better then that.

Some observant DPP forum user noticed what appear to be little rings around the buttons near the top right on the mysterious 40D pictures... he somewhat speculates or suggests that maybe, just maybe they might indicate weather sealing...

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=24247581

Li-ION batteries.. of course they have had them on most of the Canon cameras since at least the 300D... (but not on the 1D models prior to the MIII). Li-ION provide much higher power to weight ratio, and in my humble opinion are clearly superior to NiMH.

The button layout along the bottom of the screen is hideous. They'd be an ergonomic disaster. I can't imagine using it without the battery grip. Other than that it looks okay but I still have the impression the pics have been jacklegged together.

Hopefully we'll find out soon. Anyone got any idea of a release date or is that just a bit of navel gazing?
