Nice shot Zaitz. I have tried many times to get this look of warm, softly diffused light with no success. I usually end up with some funky flare and an overexposed image. I have come quite close with the proper light but not that often. Care to share any tips?

Thanks and not a problem. It wasn't straight out of the camera like that! I don't know how people do that (if they do). I shoot raw so I am going from there. The original was a bit washed out looking. With the sun up and walking towards it I don't know how else I could have managed the shot.
I increased the blacks in ACR which gave a lot more body to the photo. The other edits in ACR didn't do as much, increasing the blacks did the most I believe. General curves adjustments and altering the hues to shift the light to an orange/red vs the yellowish light that was originally there.
Out of ACR I then went into the blue channel for curves. Bringing that down on the high end gave the flare a much warmer tone instead of looking too over-exposed. Finished it up with final dodging, burning, and hue adjustments.
I don't know how the photo would have looked with in camera processing for a jpeg. I only shot it in raw so the raw file was obviously a tad flat with nothing done to it. I can send you the NEF if you want to mess with it a bit.
Down by the creek w/the D300 and older nifty-fifty. I just love how light/portable that lens is, so I'm seriously thinking about getting the 35f/1.8 G for a nice, "normal prime," --sharp, light and affordable...
