Agreed. If FF is in your crystal ball, I wouldn't buy EF-S now.

For those of you have the lens, i'm thinking of either getting this lens and mounting on my 20d, or upgrade my 20d to a 5d. I can't only afford one or the other. I'm planning to upgrade to a FF eventually and do not want to get the 10-22mm EFs. Will this be a waste of money until i get a FF camera, or will my 20d be sufficient for the meantime. your opinions will be appreciated. thanks

But how far away is eventually? And how many shots will you not be able to take at the wide end before you do go FF. Buy 10-22 now, use it, love it, and then sell it later. I have a 10-22 and a 60 macro, now both kinda redundant since getting the 5D (never use the 20D anymore) ...but I'll sell em, and can look back at some great pictures I took with both

I agree. When I had a 20D, I bought a used 10-22 from the Buy&Sell board here. Took lots of great pictures with it. When I moved to the 5D, I sold it and broke even. Even if I had sold it for less than I had paid for it, I would have considered that the fair rental value for the year I had it, considering the use I got out of it. In fact, I did the same thing with my 17-55IS, though I did lose some money as I bought it new when it first came out.

Well said. And I take it back about the 60 macro - have just been playing about with it and an extension tube - makes for a very close working distance, but the images are still lovely.

If EF-S was about to be phased out then I might be cautious, but let's face it, it's not going anywhere just yet, and with a healthy used market you don't stand to lose more than a very modest 'rental' fee on the lens.

I used the 16-35 II and Sigma 12-24, both full frame lenses on the 5D.

If you have a 1.6x or 1.3x camera now and want ultra wide, the Sigma 12-24 is worth considering too, and if you move to FF its extra ultra wide

As far a IQ, the higher costing Canon is sharper as you open the aperture, and would be the better 16mm performer.

Yet, given the Sigma lower cost and extra ultra wide 12mm that's a trade off I'm sure some would take. 12mm on FF is really something to see, might with worth considering too.

Thanks guys, the reason i'm holding off on the 5D right now is because its been nearly 2 years since its release. Should i take the chance now to buy it, or wait until a newer model is released? I don't want to buy the 5D just to see it be replaced by a newer model in a few months. hence buying the 16-35 first.

Angelstalker, A 5D replacement is probably still at least 9 months away (I just can't see Canon replacing the 5D before the 1Ds2), and probably even longer. In addition, its replacement will probably come in at a similar price to what the 5D came in at. You can get some good deals on 5Ds right now, so thats what I would go for. This is all guess work on my part, but my feeling is that if you think you can get good use out of a 5D now, then definitely go for it.

You don't need a 5D to get fantastic shots with a 16-35. The 20D is a great camera that will serve you very well and take fanatastic shots with a 16-35 M-II.

If you want the very best 5D deal, wait until the new/upgrade version of the 5D hits, then buy a used 5D M-I.

Speaking for myself, if I had the money for a 16-35 M-II, I would just get the 16-35 and begin saving again until the upgrade comes out - probably next Feb/March.

I appreciate everyone's opinion, think i'm going to go with the 16-35. B&H has it for $1,449.99. is this a good price, i'm use to shopping with them, so have no problems, and it saves me on tax. also what I know filters are a matter of preference, but which one would you recommend?

I got the Hoya Pro 1 thin filter on ebay, for a fraction of the price here.

Does anyone know if you will need a thin polarizer? I know it takes 82mm filters but it seems that the front element only covers the inner 2/3rds of the frontal area.

Did anybody try the 16-35II with LEE filters?
I really like their Graduated 84x120mm filters and polorizer. I used them on the older 16-35 and just found that they have a 82mm adapter ring:

I took some with the 5D and the 16-35L II with Lee hard grads as well esd eiyh yhr Lrr snf Singh-Ray Enhancer filters. I used the 82mm wide angle adapter ring in the wide angle hood. I haven't had a chance to process the files yet, as they are on my mac and currently i've only got my pc work laptop with me.

Will try and post in the next couple of days.

Make sure you get the Lee Wide angle adapter ring. Adorama screwed up and sent me the regular ring which i returned and ended up picking up the WA adapter ring locally.

Thanks for the follow up Khurram,
I have the wide-angle hood (love it) and the wide angle 72mm adapter. I am happy to know that the 82mm ring may work. Let me know your findings..
I have not decided to get the 16-35L II yet. I would like to test the files from f/5.6 to f/11. If there is any corner sharpness and/or flare resistance improvement, I will probably get it.

You don't need a thin polarizer. I bought an old, thick B&W "E" circular polarizer off of ebay and it works fine (I don't know what the "E" stands for but it was on the filter. I like that my normal lens cap will fit on the end of it.

Very good to know. It was a real PITA to use a thin polarizer with my EF-S 10-22. Now about the ridonkulous prices for 82mm circular polarizers...

I love the hood as well - it's probably by oldest piece of equipment now (i've had it for about 7 years).

Here's the only shot i processed so far. I sent it to my work account from my Mac, so i don't remember if this was shot at F11 or F16. Most of my sunrise and sunset shots were shot at F11 to F16 on this trip. This one was with the Lee 3 stop grad and the Singh-Ray Enhancer.

i do need to get used to shooting with the 5D, since unlike the 1 series it doesn't have a 100% veiwfinder, but it sure is nice shooting full frame again!

I'm planning on purchasing the new 16-35 II in the near future but am puzzled by what filters to purchase. I take photos in very dirty conditions (such as the windy deserts of Chile) and like to use a UV filter. Do you recommend using an 82mm filter or stepping down to a smaller one. What size circular polarizer do you use, if any.

I read thru all the "hand on" and didn't see these questions answered. If they have been addressed already, I apologize.

Mine is old too. I bought it to use with the D30!

The exif shows f/16 and 24mm. Very impressive shot!

I will be shooting with the 5D as well. (From the 1Ds)
The full viewfinder may be an issue with the hood since we can't see the entire image. Did you shoot at 16mm with the hood? If so, does the hood shows on the image?

i think the widest i shot was around 18 or 19mm, will need to go through the files. I did take a look throught the viewfinder at 16mm to see if there was any vignetting visible when stopped down. As i was unable to see any vignetting, i assumed 16mm would be ok, but at the time i didn't consider the fact that the 5D doesn't have a 100% viewfinder.

I did find that with the old 16-35L, if i used the Lee hood (with the 77mm adapter ring), on the 1DIIN, i would get vignetting with the hood at around 16mm to 18mm. Given that that the 1DIIN was a 1.25 crop sensor, this lens looks to have much less vignetting.

I wish i had spent some time testing at different apertures and focal lengths rather then just shooting according to the scene's requirement.

I am leaving for the Bay area on tuesday night, so i think i will test the lens at different focal lengths. I had intended to use the 16-35L II exclusively on the 5D for my wide angle needs and use the 1DIII for everything else. But given that i needed to clone out 7 or 8 dust spots in DPP with the 5D, i think i will test the 16-35L's performance on the 1DIII, to see how it compares to the 5D for situations when i don't need to go wider then 21mm.
