If you consider the second card is backup, then not deleting the file is probably the correct approach. One reason for backup is to correct an accidental deletion.

True. But in my case the cards have already been backed up - now I just want to erase and carry on. As I say, no big deal - one day I'll probably be thanking them for it
Can anyone comment on the new viewfinder in the 1D3? Would you say it is brighter thaen the 1D2s viewfinder and how does it compare to a 20D. Since i will be moving up from a 20D I hope the viewfinder is brighter. Also I think it has 100% coverage.
I can't comment wrt the 1DsII, but the viewfinder of the 1DIII is a step or two above the 5D. Just a joy. And the eyecup is much more comfortable as well.

I just got off the phone with two dealers in the New York area. Both claim they have atleast 2 in stock and each vendor wants $6500 today or $4500 after Friday June 1 if they still have any left. Now idea what is significant with Friday and why it would be cheaper then. I saw one from Cameta on eBay going currently at $4900 with 2 days left. My guess is price gouging is going to run alittle rampant for awhile. Mine is on pre-order with OneCall and it appears it will be a long wait until I have one in my hands.
Nill, any idea when you will get your cameras? I will bet I could be talked into buying a good burger and beverage if allowed to fondle, I mean drool, I mean see them when they come in...
I bet that many sales people are being tempted with encouragement similar to this.

From the quote I posted from him, we might be able to imply he was using the "fastest cards". Since he also talks about Extreme IV CF not being much of an advantage over Extreme III CF, because of UDMA transfer speed or lack thereof, with a medium leap of logic we might be able to think he was also using the fastest SD (and HC?) cards he could find.
But it doesn't jive with my rough timings. How the heck could the SDHC be almost 2X slow vs CF when the white paper and RG certainly don't point towards this.
Maybe I'll put a 2GB SD in and let 'er rip...
Okay, stop the presses, I put in a 2 GB Ridata 150X SD card and put it in manual mode 1/500 sec, f2.8, lens cap on ISO 1600. Then I set it to 10fps. I recorded to SD only, not CF. I racked up the buffer and continued to hold down until two more shots released. Then I timed from that point....26 seconds!!! I did the test twice.
That compares with 61 seconds for the Extreme III 133X 4GB SD (HC) and 32 seconds for the Extreme III 4 GB CF.
So RG was right...the SD IS faster than the CF...IF you stay at 2GB.

I guess that means that I'll keep using the SD card as I always have: as a backup just in case I forget a CF card.
Any word on whether 8GB cards are reasonably fast in the 1D-III yet? Do I need at least Extreme III or Extreme IV for this to occur? It sure seems that the Ultra-II 8GB cards pay a performance penalty (relative to 4GB cards) in the 5D and 1D-II, unfortunately.

No news there--at least for me. My N has always and consistently written faster to the SD card--very noticeable. So I shoot to an 8G CF most of the time but keep an SD in there for when I think some extended action sequrences might be in the offing.

That's kind of what I expected since the Mark II N timings are the fastest with the Sandisk 1 & 2GB cards from last July. Unfortunately with the nearly 2x larger Mark III RAW files, it would be nice to be able to use 4GB+ SD that are faster than CF.... but I guess 150 shots on SD is still OK, if not ideal...

That was never in question since it's so clearly stated in the Galbraith CF/SD performance database. The question was whether or not it also applies to the Mark III because Galbraith's preview gave no hint at which SD card he was using. Thanks to Jim, we seem to have a better idea that it does.

Lenshead, I looked through the viewfinders of the 1DIII, 1DsII and 5D at a Canon display recently. To me, the 1DIII definitely stood out in terms of brightness. The coverage is indeed 100%. The size of the viewfinder is smaller than that of the full frame cameras, though.
The 20D (which I own) is really no comparison. Really dark and small VF.
Any mkIII users have any comparisons to normal ISO photo quality vs say the 5D. I am assuming the III will produce the much needed quality improvement over the II and IIN. But does it rival the 5D/1dsmkII at normal ISO (say less than 400)?
Who will be the first to post an actual review of the III on FM reviews?
