Can't you swap the function of those two buttons so that it works more or less as we're accustomed to?

That was a concerned to me but as Mike has indicated they can be swapped. I would have preferred to keep exposure lock on the shutter button and focus on the * button but it doesn't appear that option is available except in #2 and only at the time you press the shutter. I'm still undecided about using C.Fn IV: -1 options 2 or 3.
Interesting observation for the Auto Iso Shift Custom Function........
Limited my ISO speed range in C.Fn 1-3 to ISO 100-800.
Now I can only manually set ISO 100-800 on my Mk 3.
However when I turn on C.Fn 1-8 to #2 (enable ISO safety shift),
the camera will shift my ISO all the way up to 3200 even if I want it
limited to ISO 800. I cannot limit the range of ISO shift I get with
the safety shift function. This is a drag.
Also the safety shift function cuts your maximum burst rate in third,
from >99 jpeg shots with it off, to ~32 shots with it on.
So I added safety shift to My Menu Functions and keep it turned off
unless I really need it and do not mind having my burst capacity crippled.
High Iso Noise Reduction Custom Function (C.Fn 2-2)
cripples your burst capacity even further from >99 to ~14.
No free lunch with this camera, so if you need the burst capacity
than reduce noise in post.
That's a disappointing image. Why is a high ISO function processing a low ISO file? Seems like programatically they should disable the function below 800 or 1600.
I got collected my Mark III this after noon (In IRELAND) and I have had nothing but problems with it.
I keep getting "Err 01 - Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts." I have tried all my lenses (9 Canon L lenses) on the body and after I have taken about 5 shots the camera locks up and shows the error with every one of them!!
And most of the time when the camera does fire the aperture on the top LCD reads ‘00’ as if no lens was attached to the body.
I had only read about that very same problem yesterday happening to another user and now it happens to me.
The Pro dealer is now closed until Tuesday, as it’s a long weekend here in Ireland.
And who knows how long I will have to wait for a replacement body as I got one of the first in the country.
I know there is nothing anyone can do, I’m just pi**ed off after spending €4180 Euro on a Pro body that won’t work out of the box!!
The serial number of my camera is 512200, I see here another user has had the same problem as me: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=23434750
And the serial number of the other body was 511295. Both numbers are pretty close so maybe the problem has something to do with a certain batch of cameras.
And I have just checked the firmware version and on my camera it reads as 1.0.8.
Hopefully this will be the last we hear about any more problems on the MK3….
I read somewhere that the battery type used in this often comes partially charged - ie you could open the box, pop in the battery and card and take a shot. Any truth to this?
I ask because I'll be picking mine up in person (when...) and I have notieced the posts regarding lens mount malfunction and wonder if I can test before I leave the shop - there certainly won't be a demo model hanging around to take the battery from....

Worst case scenario it comes with an AC adapter so you wouldn't even need the battery at all to do testing "tethered" to a wall socket.
Mike Lee kindly offered to host this file. I wanted to see what could be done in-camera. ISO 3200 High ISO noise reduction on, Large jpg at compression 10, sharpening at 4, saturation plus 1, contrast plus 1.
Adobe 1998, so it's a bit dull in a web browser. Straight copy from CF card.

It looks like the quality of the sunlight changed for the ISO 100 shot with NR on, so that could also affect perception of the image.
You're right. I was battling some cloud - I think I missed the moment on this one so perhaps not a good comparison shot. As far as noise is concerned, I don't think there's much difference between the two ISO 100 shots.
Paul,
did you try to get the battery out, and put it back in again ? I had this contact-error with my 27-200 2.8 L IS and my D60 and 10D bodies regularly. This little trick helped.
I will try this combination with my 1D today.
erwin
well, I tried my 70-200 2.8 Is, and every two shots or so, I get the error message 99.
I seems as if the mirror get stuck.
I press the shutter half way, and it solves the problem, only to re-appear again after 2 shots.
I tried taking off the 1.4 extender. The problem remains.
I tried cleaning the contacts, the problem remains.
I had the same problem from time to time on my other bodies, but not that frequently.
Is this a software issue? Is this related to this particular lens?
Page 85 of 1DMark3 manual indicates that you must use only the center AF point when using a EF70 - 200 f2.8 or you will get focusing errors. Also when you use an extender and maximum exposure is of f4 or higher you are subject to mis-focusing as focusing points have more limited abilities. Again see manual page 85.
1. Are you going to use center point focus with sports?
2. Are you going to use center point focus with horizontal or surround assist point? CFn 8
3. Are you going to use AF start button as opposed to camera shutter release button? CFn 6
I have learned to use the center point with my 20D but this is so much more sophiscated I am not sure what to do. Suggestions would be appreciated it.
I just got my 1DMark3 today and loving it but feeling a little overwhelmed. So much camera.
Impressive. I pick up my Mark III later this morning. I feel like a child before Christmas morning. <>
