anybody know where to get some nice UV filters for this lens that won't break the bank? Anybody going naked?
my lenses go naked 99.5% of the time. i only add a UV when i need to shoot in inclement weather or add a polarizer when i need the effect. with that said, i just picked up an 82mm B+W MRC UV filter for my 16-35L II to shoot close-up watersports this summer.

The 16-35 II can benefit from a filter in adverse conditions since the front group moves in and out quite a bit during zooming. I'm not sure how much dust would enter without it.

Don't want to get this too off topic, but this is my favorite pro-filter story:
Shooting at LMU in LA, early pm, shooting the waterfountain out front for a sunset shot. Setting up my tripod when suddenly the in-ground sprinklers turned on full bore and SOAKED the front of my (thank Gawd) rental 16-35 without a filter. I mean high pressure soakage. Luckily it was only for a moment, and I have no idea what happened to the internals of the lens, but I'm sure glad it was a rental. Also, reminded me why I use filters, seatbelts, etc. You don't plan on accidents, which is why they call them accidents.

Just finished a week of shooting in Hawaii and the 16-35/mk2 performed beautifully (even after being dropped from the seat of a van to bare concrete!).
Hopefully, I'll have time to post some samples in the coming days.

Just tested my non-slim polarizer. Focused at infinity, it is basically the same as the slim version in terms of vignetting - i.e., just barely noticeable wide open compared to naked when looking at white wall shots.
As you focus closer, the picture is not as clear. Focused all the way in, you cannot stop down far enough to eliminate the dark corners. Focused at 1.5 feet, it is basically the same as non-slim filter from f/11 onwards.
So I would say for most purposes, you should be OK with the non-slim (mine is heliopan), since I rarely shoot wide open or closer than 1.5 feet with a polarizer, but if I had to do over again, I would probably order the slim so I wouldn't have to remember the limits.
Needless to say, all of the above is at 16mm, and I would expect no issues at longer focal lengths.

Beyond about 28-30 mm, my old version is better. The MK II seems to be optimized for the wider part of the range. However, I have the 24-70 for the longer part of that range. At 24 mm the 16-35 II is better than any Canon I have had, including the 16-35 MK I, a couple of 24-70s, 24-105, 24/2.8.

EB, have you ever tried the 24L? i'm just curious how well it compares to that at f/2.8 and up. thanks.

Ross, I certainly have noticed this, too. From 24-35mm, f/2.8-f/4.0 looks noticeably muddy in the center but cleans up by f/5.6. I'm planning on exchanging the lens for another copy.

Very nice! I envy your chance to feed your camera and lenses such beautiful content! I especially like the sillouette of the palms, the mid-range zoom of the volcanic valley and then the close-up of the crater. Gorgeous blues in the lighthouse shots. Thanks!
Amazing service, very good price. They just got some in stock.
Highly recommended

Since Singh-Ray is not ready with a 82mm circ polarizer, i'd like to get some advice on my options.
Does anyone know the difference between the Hoya Pro 1 Digital Multi-coated Circ polarizer ($270 at B&H & $170 at photofilter.com), the Hoya Pro 1 SMC circ polarizer ($260 at photofilter.com) and the Hoya pro 1 super HMC circ. polarizer ($330 at B&H)
the sales guy at photofilter.com recommended the digital circ polarizer over the Pro1 SMC if used with a digital camera, bcoz he says there is a cyan color shift with it. Does anyone know if the digital is better for digital cameras
Lastly, does anyone know how the Heliopan SH-MPC UV filter ($132) compares with the Hoya pro1 super hmc UV filter($104) Does the Heliopan have front threads does it vignette with the 16-35

Here are some sample shots using a Kenko Pro 1 Digital bought of eBay for $75 shipped. I have a Singh-Ray in 77mm and didn't want to spend much since I was eyeing a Singh-Ray down the road when/if they release a 82mm model. Most of these are shot on the wide end of the lens, so forgive the uneven polarization. I was trying to put the filter through its paces to see how well it worked. All of these were shot in RAW, processed through Capture One, standard sharpening (34) using Magne profiles.
Again probably a little over the top, but I figured I'd see how the Kenko performs. It's supposed to be the Asia marketed equivalent of the Hoya Pro 1 Digital.

I actually have a Kenko Pro 1 in the 77mm size, unfortunately they don't make them in the 82mm size.

Just to let anyone who is interested in getting Singh-Ray 82mm size filters, I just talked to Bob Singh, and he has told me they are going to produce one batch of 82mm Color combo polarizers and the Vari ND filter in about 6 weeks time. They are taking orders right now, but only those who have pre-ordered will get one, as they are ordering enough parts only to produce how many were pre-ordered.
I have ordered both. In the meantime i do need to find a regular polarizer. I am looking for a slim mount option that has front threads (so that my wide angle lee hood can be attached). Would appreciate if someone can let me know if there are any options other then the Hoya Pro 1. Not sure if there is any other cir polarizer out there other then the Hoya that will meet my needs. I'm also a bit confused on which Pro 1 to order. As I've seen different naming conventions for their multi-coated filters
-Hoya Pro 1 Digital Multi-coated Circ polarizer
($270 at B&H & $170 at photofilter.com)
-Hoya Pro 1 SMC circ polarizer ($260 at photofilter.com)
-Hoya pro 1 super HMC circ. polarizer ($330 at B&H)
I have a 77mm Kenko Digital Pro 1 polarizer but was told that there isn't one available in 82mm.
