I guess the short answer is "maybe". There are people on this thread who had a decent copy of the MK I and sent the MK II back as they didn't feel the difference warranted the cost. There are others like me who thought it was a worthwhile upgrade. Unfortunately I don't know if there is a simple answer. In my specific case, the performance on the wide end of the new lens was noticeably better than my MK I. So for me it was worth it.

Yes. The rollover on the first page of the Canon 16-35mm II test at 16:9 particularly shows the improvement at the wide end of the Mark II. It's a more accomplished lens all round: less distortion in the 16-20mm range, better controlled CA, better contrast, and higher resolution in Zone C.

has anyone tested the new lens against the 24L at f/2.8 and above? the only comparison i've seen is the ISO 12233 crops at the-digital-picture.com.

Hi Mark/Husband,
I really enjoyed the exciting conclusion of the review. I guess all Canon needs to do in the Mk III is to add a little 'magic and sparkle'...
Good Work!

What's currently a good price for the new version? I still see it at $1600.
mine came from tallyn's at $1479 shipped. roberts is selling them for $1469 shipped. i've spent money at both shops and recommend buying from either one.

chris, that's a great price after shipping. i expect retail price will settle at $1399 after the hype is over.
i hate zoom lenses but this one changed my attitude. if it could do f/1.4~2 at 35mm then my 35L would be gone. the 35L used to be my most-used lens but the 16-35L II is quickly taking its place.

It's THAT good?! Really?!
in my opinion, yes. the zoom controls CA extremely well and is a better "daylight" lens. the 35L still reigns supreme in low light and in background separation. they compliment each other very well.

I'm currently living in the US for a while but I have a UK card - was going to order the 16-35 II but it appears B&H won't ship since it's over $1500 and newegg for example doesn't let you use an international card. Any suggestions, anyone?

If you are living here, even temporarily, you should get a USD credit card. The conversion rate that your UK card/bank uses can't be good. I don't think you can use an international/overseas credit card at the gas stations either, as they require a US zip code.
