Unclear if dealers are able to release cameras on this date, or if cameras will be shipped from Distribution Center to dealers on that date, or even if it only means they will leave Japan on that date.
Just got word from The Camera Store in Calgary that Canon Canada is only going to fill 'actual orders' at first to CPS members - ie, you can't just be on the list, but you have to have ordered via the website or put the money in at the shop.
Apparently everyone on the list is getting the same notification, and ordering will hold your place in line (at the least), and likely move you up ahead of those that don't commit. Again, CPS only (in Canada) for the first shipment was what I was told.
My speculation, given the timing, is that the April 21st date applies here as well - please note, that is just my interpretation of the sudden rush to get confirmed orders in line.
I'm no. 2 in the queue and they told me today that the 21st is still the date Canon is quoting them. I hope they don't want to keep too many demos for themselves.

...Here is one of the articles I was referring to. I never had any problems with my 1DMKII, but I know of a few who had problems with first production run cameras. Canon sorted it out after that.
That article gets cited every time somebody asks whether there is any difference in image quality between the Mark II and the IIn. (In fact, it may be the only one that gets cited — no, that's not true, there's one other one by the tech editor over on NatureScapes...) If you buy what the SS author was saying, the entire II model was broken and never fixed, and the IIn was the "fix."
I think it's fair to say the consensus among the vast majority of users of both the II and the IIn is that this is and was not the case at all, and that the differences (if any) in focus/sharpness between the II and IIn were strictly down to one or more of (a) jpg tuning & picture styles, (b) sample variation, and (c) user issues or perception.
I know any number of people who had problems with the last production run of the original 1D. Stuff happens.
I had the Mk2 and then the Mk2N and finally sold the N for another 5, as portraiture and weddings are the primary income streams. I noticed no, as in none, nada, zippo diff in IQ or AF speed or accuracy between the two 2s.
Nill hit it on the head with perception....... it can become reality...
with european and australian delivery times confirmed, has anyone heard anything about N. American delivery It appears that those who have pre-orders with Calumet overseas have had news about delivery status, any word yet for USA
Vistek and the Camera Store are still saying end of May/start of June, but no firm dates. I'm really hoping that the 1DIII is released before the end of May and RRS is quick in coming out with an L plate for my june trip to SF/Big Sur -- I won't hold my breath though.

I asked RRS to put me on the waiting list for one and they said no list yet, check back in a few weeks. So no, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Wee I just got a e-mail from the shop where I have one in ordre. They should get the first shipment may 25th. That is confirmed from Canon, they still can't say how many they will get but the date should be set now.
I am 2 on the list so I am crossing my fingers they will get at least 2 of them

You may want to hope for three cameras, my shop says the first they get will not be sold but will be used as a demo.
I on the other hand hope for at least two as I'm first on their list...

Salesman: "feel free to play with Canon's new 1 series camera. I can sell it to you whenever I get more in and the orders on my waiting list are filled."
How many people that are in the market for one have not heard of it being released?
If a hands on approach facilitates the sale, and I can understand that it would, let them play with the camera when there's an inventory. It's not like there going to lose a sale - this isn't an impulse buy.
In any event, that's how the dealer I use operates. They'd rather sell a unit now than create demand that can't be fulfilled at this time in any event.
You are overlooking something. What if the dealer takes a pre-order and gets the customer to commit to buying the camera from their store instead of looking elsewhere? Then who cares about current supply...sell the future supply.
A lot of people want to see the top-of-the-line model even if they don't intend to buy it, just the fact a store has the latest cool stuff to see and handle draws a crowd that will buy other stuff - rule number one if you want to sell is get the people into the store so you can start the sales talk. I also think the gear-heads that work in the store like to show off, a quick burst of 10fps impresses the customers.
