I thought we would have some camera arrivals today. How can only one guy buy a camera at retail? I've seen some posts indicating some cameras in Asia, but I think we would have some links posted if that were true. No word on sportshooter.com either.

But that was not an early production problem — that was a sample defect issue that continued through the very last production run. And I never heard that it ever affected the 1Ds, just the 1D. No?
I think Canon has a good enough track record with it's digital bodies to not warrant concern and I think much of the concern put out by those above sounds like they're trying to convince themselves they don't want it and make up reasons as much as anything.
I've always thought like Jim as well, either buy it when it's brand spanking new and enjoy the early adopter ride or buy it after the next model comes out. With these bodies you get a little more time, with Apple stuff you get about 6 months.

Yah what's up with this? Canon only shipped one camera to down under? In reading the guy's posts it doesn't sound like he felt his deal was anything special, just first on the list at his local store. I thought the flood gates' be starting to open today.

I've never heard of anyone with that issue on a 1Ds either, and as you noted, wasn't a "beta" issue. So discounting that, and not reading into the "AF update" (since no one noticed any sort of improvement, or issue that needed solving, I'm not sure what I should be reading into it,) that leaves the CF Lexar issue I mentioned and the one I missed, which was the playback if you pushed review too fast on some 1DsII bodies. My early 1Ds, 1DII, 1DsII and 1DIIN had zero issues, so again the extremely minor CF and playback issues in a few bodies don't warrant any sort of concern from me about the 1D III. Yet again here I see post after post mentioning the same lens issues as justification for waiting on a body. So don't buy a Chevy truck if the last two versions of the Cavalier have had issues? What components, design team, production line, etc. are shared between the lenses in question and the 1 series bodies?
There is no question that there were problems with the initial run of 1DMKII cameras. Doesn't mean it will happen again, doesn't mean it wont. Has nothing to do with talking oneself out of anything.
My dealer just let me know he is expecting his first shipment next week and that Canon is advising him that they are only able to meet the first 10% of preorders nationwide right now, so basically he has no clue how many he will get until either: they arrive or Canon bills him (and he said he checks their invoicing online regularly)
We've come all the way this year from hoping Canon delivers medium format to wishing a 10mp camera would finally ship. What has become of us? Think of the excitement of the original 1D and 1Ds product launch. Now we apparently wait for Canon to get a new camera to focus on stationary objects. I think the glory days may be over.

What were they? I don't remember anything of significance, certainly nothing hardware related.

soft pictures, bad reds. There was a big write up on it on sportsshooter.com, and several owners of the first batch over at naturescapes.net had the same problems. I think many of this batch went to pros who had the juice to get the first production run.
The "soft pictures" was the usual reaction going from the look of 1D files to Mark II files that we still see remarked on here and elsewhere occasionally. It was a "feature" of the camera, not anything that was ever fixed or needed fixing.
The red issue — which I ran into myself — was software or, just maybe, firmware related, and was dealt with in fairly short order. It was no sort of hardware problem at all.
There may have been pre-production cameras in the hands of pros at some of the big sports events that suffered some issues, just as the Mark III sample that RG has reported. But again, I had myself one of the very first production samples sold this country, and it was and remains flawless. I know of no "early production" hardware problems in the Mark II line.
The very first original 1D production cameras did have a banding issue that was fixed by Canon in hardware, but that's the only thing of that sort that I am aware of.
Confirming small shipment has arrived and been shipped to retailers in Australia, although most retailers are holding these as demo models not for sale, another drop expected in the next week.
Just returned from my camera store after using the demo 1d3 and my memory card to take a dozen or so shots in the store. Absolutely fabulous, almost 3D like in some of the shots. I'm now sure that I will not miss my 5D [ as great a camera as it is ] and cannot wait to get my hands on the mk3 in under 2 weeks. I've read all the speculation, but after seeing the results from using the camera myself, I am VERY excited and cant wait for mine to appear.
p.s. the images were crystal clear and focus was spot on using the 16-35 11
Poor little orphan "Hands on Mk3" thread - it gives me a pang in the heart every time I come to this forum and see it, still with only the mod's entry......
C'mon! Somebody get the ball rollin' here! When are the cameras gonna show up?
Here is one of the articles I was referring to. I never had any problems with my 1DMKII, but I know of a few who had problems with first production run cameras. Canon sorted it out after that.

Unclear if dealers are able to release cameras on this date, or if cameras will be shipped from Distribution Center to dealers on that date, or even if it only means they will leave Japan on that date.
